“Pahaadi Kanya”(1936) was directed by Harshad Rai Mehta for Wadia Movietone, Bombay. This movie had Nadia, Boman Shroff, John Cawas, Sharifa, Gulshan, Sardar Mansoor, Master Mohammad, Jal Khambata, Abdul Rehman, Bismillah etc in it. This movie is described as a costume drama in HFGK though it appears to be an action movie, seeing the name of Nadia in it in the title role alongwith Boman Shroff and Johan Cawas.

Here is a duet song from this movie. HFGK is silent about the singers of this song. This song has a female and a male voice. According to HFGK, this song was picturised on Nadia and Sardar Mansoor.

Joseph David is the lyricist. Music is composed by Master Mohammad.

I found it quite challenging to deciphe and note down the lyrics of this song. After listening to the song a few times, I managed to note down the lyrics of the song fully including words that are rarely found in Hindi movies. For instance, this song had used the word “birkha” for “barkha” (rain). I felt quite pleased with myself after I found that I managed to note down the song to my satisfaction.

Here is this extremely rare song that one only read about in HFGK till now without hoping that one day we will be able to listen to it. This song has become available online thanks to Mr Roberto and Mr Surjit Singh.

I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the singers of this song.

Lyrics

premi praan bichhde sukh mein
kabhi na rahe
bina jal ke machhli jaise
kabhi na rahe
premi praan bichhde sukh mein
kabhi na rahe
chanda bin chakor
chakor bin chanda
kya chanda kya chakor rahe
birkha bin mayur
mayur bin birkha
kya birkha kya mayur rahe
birkha bin mayur
mayur bin birkha
kya birkha kya mayur rahe
premi praan bichhde sukh mein
kabhi na rahe
premi praan bichhde sukh mein
kabhi na rahe

jal ke bin sarita
sarita bin jal ke
kya jal kya sarita hi rahe
jo phool bin bhanwar
bhanwar bin phool ke
phool rahe kya bhanwar rahe
jo phool bin bhanwar
bhanwar bin phool ke
phool rahe kya bhanwar rahe
premi praan bichhde sukh mein
kabhi na rahe
premi praan bichhde sukh mein
kabhi na rahe

kaaya bin praan praan bin kaaya
kya kaaya kya praan rahe
sooraj bin kiran
kiran bin sooraj
kya sooraj kya kiran rahe
sooraj bin kiran
kiran bin sooraj
kya sooraj kya kiran rahe
premi praan bichhde sukh mein
kabhi na rahe
bina jal ke machhli jaise kabhi na rahe

The singers are Sardar Mansur (an actor of the 1930s-1940s) and Fearless Nadia herself. I also uploaded the song a few months ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuLVP1WAA-g).

Nadia sang for herself a few times, but I have only come across three so far: (1) This one; (2) “Dil mein ghar kayi ae jaan-e-muhabbat tere” from NOOR-E-YAMAN (1935), also a duet with Sardar Mansur (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drzQSO61ZRc); (3) A few words and lines in “Meri jholi bhar de khaali re teri Raam kare rakh waali” from MUQABLA (1942), sung by Hafiz Khan Mastana (video is available here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BL4qQR1JCPA).
