Hindi movies began to be made from 1931 onwards. Though these movies contained songs right from the beginning, it took a while before record companies saw the potential in making records of movie songs.

Hardly any movie prints of these earlier movies are available, so records of these songs are the only way one can get to listen to these songs. Very few records of Hindi movie songs were made in the earlier years. For instance, only 44 records containing 74 songs were issued for Hindi movie songs from 1931 to 1934. Thanks to the generosity of record collectors, quite a few of these songs have been shared online.

About 50 % of these songs (37 songs) from 1931 to 1934 have already been discussed in the blog. It is hoped that we will be able to cover the remaining songs from this era as well that are available on records and which have been shared by record collectors online.

Here is a song from “Daaku Ki Ladki”(1933). This movie was directed by Moti Gidwani for Imperial Films Company, Bombay. The movie had Sulochana, D Bilimoria, Ghulam Mohammad, Hadi, Laxmi, Saiyyad Ahmad, Ghulam Rasool etc in it.

This movie had 12 songs in it, but only one record was issued containg two songs of the movie. The song under discussion is one of these two songs. This song is sung by Zohra Jaan and Aslam.

Lyricist of the song is not known. This movie had two music directors, viz Pransukhlal Naik and Gadgil, but the music director for the song under discussion is not known.

This song is made available online courtesy Mr Roberto and Mr Surjit Singh.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this movie as well as on the picturisation of this song. I request our readers with keener ears to suggest corrections in the lyrics wherever applicable.

Lyrics

Aisi wafa karna
haan dekhna
aisi wafa karna
haan dekhna
nigaah pherna
na munh modna
nigaah pherna
na munh modna
mere dilruba
mere khush ada
mere dilruba
mere khush ada
aisi wafa karna
haan dekhna
aisi wafa karna

?? gham ka karta hai zakhmi
?? gham ka karta hai zakhmi
teer e nazar mere dil mein chubha
teer e nazar mere dil mein chubha
josh e tamanna dekhna
josh e tamanna dekhna

mere dilruba
mere khush ada
mere dilruba
mere khush ada
aisi wafa karna
haan dekhna
aisi wafa karna

agar hai dibar kadr e ulfat
agar hai dibar kadr e ulfat
ibaad e(?) fana
meri wafa dhooondhna
haan meri wafa dhooondhna
sambhal sambhal ae dil sambhal
sambhal sambhal ae dil sambhal
dekha na bhaala deewaana
dekha na bhaala deewaana

josh e tamanna dekhna
josh e tamanna dekhna

aisi wafa karna
haan dekhna
aisi wafa karna
haan dekhna
nigaah pherna
na munh modna
nigaah pherna
na munh modna
mere dulruba
mere khush ada
mere dulruba
mere khush ada
aisi wafa karna
haan dekhna
aisi wafa karna

Since playback system was not in vogue in 1933, I guess, Zohrabai Ambalewaali may have acted in this film and sang on herself.

Incidentally, one of the songs she sang in this film was the debut song of her carrier in Hindi films.

Sadanand sir I read Im Wikipedia of Zohrabai
That her debut film was Daku ki ladki

This song is not sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali.

Who is the singer of this song, in that case ?

I was under the impression it is Miss Zohra, who was a singing actress of the 1930s, not Zohrabai Ambalewali.

Since I cannot delete my older comments, I have since come across a couple of links that do suggest that both of the available songs from DAKU KI LADKI (1933) are in fact by Zohrabai Ambalewali. I have also noticed that Miss Zohra Jaan, the singing actress of the 30s, does not appear in the cast listing for the film, so it wouldn’t make sense that she would have played a role in the film.
