Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 4
—————————————————–

It is winters in north India.  Delhi continues to be cold.  The day temperatures have started to rise and the sun shines brightly in clear skies these days.  However, the nights still continue to be chilly.  And I so heartily empathize with the sentiments that Atul ji had expressed in one of the posts a couple of days ago – that how inviting is the warmth of a quilt these days, and how the cold weather has effected the productivity and the progress of the blog ticker.  A ha, someone else with the same issues of how this year’s extreme weather has disturbed the working routines.  If one wakes up very early, like I did today, at around 5.10 am, मन ही नहीं किया कंबल छोडने का, and the snooze took away another hour and a half before I felt brave enough to leave the warm refuge of the covers.

But all is not so adverse with the cold weather.  For those with a sweet tooth, this weather means that the shops are stocked with special candies and sweets that are generally avoided in the summer months.  These candies are made from a combination of ‘gud’ (jaggery) or sugar, sesame seeds, peanuts, plus other dry fruits like cashews, pistachio, and raisins etc.  The most common and popular amongst these candies are ‘gajak’, ‘revdi’, ’patti’ etc.  Sometimes such candy is also made in combination with ‘maava’ (made by processing milk), and is then prepared in form of ‘laddus’ with a special name – ‘bhugga’.  One item that is common amongst all these items is a generous mixing of sesame seeds.  The sesame seeds come in three varieties – white, black and red.  For the purpose of these candies and sweets, the white sesame seeds are used.  The characteristic of these seeds is that they generate internal warmth in the body; the one reason that they are avoided in the summer months.

This song and this post came up quite by accident.  I was searching for something totally different, and I bumped into this song quite unexpectedly.  As I checked it out, it immediately fitted so well into the current ‘sales pitch’ series, and equally well into the discussion on the cold weather.  🙂

And so, here is this sales pitch for selling ‘revdi’, the popular candy of the winter months.  The film is ‘Zaalim Jaadugar’, a very obscure film from 1960, which makes its debut on the blog today.  As I checked the details of this film, almost everything seems unfamiliar; maybe one of the reasons that this film was forgotten.  The banner is Firdaus Films, Bombay, and the name of the producer and director is given simply as Sultan.  The cast actors is listed as Hercules, Neeta, Raajrani, Shaam, Sujata Kumari, Kenny, Leela, Baagla, Maqbool, Begum, Amir Ahmed, Hamid Majnoo, Gippy, Ghulam Husain, Mansoor, Musa, Mohd Sandow, Badri Narayan, Shaukat, Sabaan Ali, Hetu and Om Prakash.  Of this list, I could recognize only the last name, and then that too, only if it refers to the same Om Prakash.  The name of the music director is familiar – it is Iqbal.  This gentleman is different from Iqbal Qureshi that we are very familiar with.  However, the music director Iqbal has already made his place on this blog – 5 songs posted.  The song writer names are also unfamiliar.  One of the lyricist is Shor Niazi, who has already made a debut on the blog – one song posted.  The second name, and the writer of this song, is Irshad Sandeelvi, which is a new name on this blog.

The singer names are familiar.  Of the five songs in this film, three have the voice of Mubarak Begum.  Other voices featured in these songs are Meenu Puroshottam, Khurshid Baawra and Seeta Agrawal.  The latter two names have two songs each on this blog.  Folks who are familiar with songs from the film ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960) and its famous qawwaalis, will be familiar with the persona of Khurshid Baawra, as one of the participating on screen singers in the main qawwaali songs, as well as the side romantic angle in the film.  Khurshid Baawra has been a qawwaali singer in his own right, and had a career in Hindi films that lasted for about a decade from mid 1950s to mid 1960s.

The singing voices in this song are listed as Khurshid Baawra, Seeta Agrawal and Iqbal, the MD himself.  The song starts with the ‘revdi’ seller telling us about his speciality, with very interesting comparisons, that revdi is

barfi ki ye naani hai
aur rasgulle ki taai

That it is the grandmother of ‘Barfi’ and the elderly aunt of ‘Rasgulla’, two of the more famous and popular sweet dishes prevalent in India.

As the song progresses, a lady customer joins in, expressing to her beau to buy her some of this candy.  And her beau turns out to be an extreme cheapskate, who suggests that she tie a rakhi on the wrist of the revdi seller, then she can get the sweets for free from the newly found brother.  Interesting sidestep to the problem.

So, interesting sales pitches continued.  For those in the winter zones, enjoy the season of ‘revdi’ and ‘gajak’, keep warm and sleep longer in the mornings.  🙂

Lyrics

kadaak
kadaak revdi
revdiwaalaa. . . o

ho o o o o
o o o o o

o laaya revdi kadaakedaar
kha ke dekho ji ek baar
aaya bechan chhod bazaar
le lo le lo mere sarkaar
ho laaya revdi kadaakedaar
kha ke dekho ji ek baar
aaya bechan chhod bazaar
le lo le lo mere sarkaar
ho laaya revdi kadaakedaar

aao bulbul aao mainaa
cheez mazey ki aayi
gulab ki khusboodaar revdi
lucknow se mangaai
nanhi munni sasti maddi
saaheb meri mithaai
barfi ki ye naani hai
aur rasgulle ki taai
naukar khaaye raani khaaye
khaaye rajkumar
o laaya revdi kadaakedaar
kha ke dekho ji ek baar

kadak kadak ye
kha ke tera manwaa
phadak phadak hi jaaye
o laaya revdi kadaakedaar
kha ke dekho ji ek baar

na maangu main laddu pedaa
aur na doodh malaai
ik pudiaa revdi ki le de
main ne kabhi naa khaai
janam se kadkaa aashiq hoon main
paas na mere paai
bin paise ke revdi le le
ye hai tera bhai
baandh de iske haath mein raakhi
kar na soch vichaar
o sachcha bhai behan ka pyaar
o sachcha bhai behan ka pyaar
o sachcha bhai behan ka pyaar

kadak kadka revdi
eh he he

dilli ka halwa sohan to
bilkul hai bekaar
mathura ka jo peda khaaye
aa jaaye bukhaar
bin revdi ke tujhse baalam
karoongi na main pyaar
aisi chatori aurat se to
ho gaya main bezaar
revdi hai ye gulab jamun
boondi ki sarkaar

o laaya revdi kadaakedaar
kha ke dekho ji ek baar
aaya bechan chhod bazaar
le lo le lo mere sarkaar
ho laaya revdi kadaakedaar

kadaak
kadaak revdi
revdiwaalaa. . . o

हो ओ ओ ओ ओ
ओ ओ ओ ओ ओ
