MINI SERIES…..MAHASHIVRATRI CELEBRATIONS
———————————————
Song No. 5 .. Last song.
———————————————-
I wish all our readers a VERY HAPPY MAHASHIVARATRI. May Lord Shiv Ji bless all !

Today is the most auspicious day for every Shiv Bhakt in the world. Lord Shiv and Maa Parvati get married today, as per Shiv Puran. The day is also known for the Cosmic Dance of Shiv ji-Tandav Nritya.

There is a story in Garud Puran about Mahashivaratri.
Once upon a time a king by the name of Chitrabhanu was ruling the Jambudweep i.e. Bharatvarsha ( India,in other words ).One day,the famous Maharish Ashtavakra came to him. The Rishi was surprised to find that though he was served food, the King and Queen were observing a Fast. On his enquiring, the king said,” Mahrshi ji, I remember my previous birth, when I was a Hunter by the nae of Suswar. I used to visit the jungles of Varanashi for my daily hunting. One whole day I did not get any animal. Lastly I found one Deer and I aimed my arrow at him. Then my eyes fell on the Deer’s family waiting for him. Seeing this, I could not kill the Deer. I was hungry and tired.

” I spent the whole night on top of a tree and to pass time,I plucked its leaves and threw them down. Even my canteen ( water flask) leaked and all the water was falling below the tree, without my knowledge. Therefore I spent the night remaining awake, without food or water. In the morning I climbed down and realised that it was a Bail-Patri tree. I went home.

” when finally I died,Yamdoot came to take my Pran.Saqme time I saw that Shiv sevaks also had come to take me with them. There was a fight in the two and after defeating Yamdoots,Shiv Sevaks took me to Kailash. I was told that the night which I had spent on the tree without food and water was the Mahashivratri night and that there was a Shiv Ling below the tree. Unknowingly,I put Bail-Patri and water on it. Thus I became a Shiv Bhakta. I was rewarded and in this birth I became a King.

” We do Pooja and fasting every year on this day of Mahashivratri. ” Hearing this, the Maha Rishi too declined food and observed fasting on Mahashivratri day.

Festival of Mahashivaratri is the most important festival for the millions of devotees of Lord Shiva. The festival has been accorded lot of significance in Hindu mythology. It says that a devotee who performs sincere worship of Lord Shiva on the auspicious day of Shivratri is absolved of sins and attains moksha.

Festival of Mahashivaratri has tremendous significance in Hinduism. According to sacred scriptures, ritual worship of Lord Shiva on Shivratri festival that falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalgun pleases Lord Shiva the most. This fact is said to have been declared by Lord Shiva himself, when his consort Parvati asked him as to which ritual performed by his devotees pleases him the most.

Devotees of Lord Shiva perform the ritual worship of Shivratri with care and devotion till this date. They observe day and night fast and give sacred bath to Shiva Linga with honey, milk, water etc. Hindus consider it extremely auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on a Shivaratri as it is believed that worship of Lord Shiva with devotion and sincerity absolves a devotee of past sins. The devotee reaches the abode of Lord Shanker and lives there happily. He is also liberated from the cycle of birth and death and attains moksha or salvation.

Mahashivratri Festival is also considered to be an extremely significant festival by women. Married and unmarried women observe fast and perform Shiv Pooja with sincerity to appease Goddess Parvati who is also regarded as ҇auraҠ- one who bestows marital bliss and long and prosperous married life. Unmarried women also pray for a husband like Lord Shiva who is regarded as the ideal husband.

On this Auspicious occasion.I present today ” Shiv Tandav Stotra ” which was created by Lankadhipati Ravan,a great Shiv Bhakt.

The Shiv Tandav Stotra is written by the Greatest Shiv Bhakt of all times, namely “RAVAN” or “DASHANAN” or “LANKESH’, the Ten Headed King of Lanka and Demons, the Great scholar. He had a wish, that every morning he would wake up and be able to see his Lord Shiva. For this he requested Lord Shiva to come and stay with him but he denied. so Ravan decided to pick up Kailash Parvat and bring it along with him to the Lanka and he did manage to pick it up on his head but couldn’t move against the will of Lord Shiva.

So this was the time he decided to win over Lord Shiva with his tapasya (meditation) He played (veena) music with his intestines and sang this stotra and that’s where and when this Stotra got made.He also managed to win over Lord Shiva and also got his wish and Lord Shiva gave him a shiv Ling to take along but there was a condition that once this Ling is kept on the ground it couldn’t be moved. And the Ravan was tricked by Ganeshji as he asked him to hold on to the shiv ling as he went for the toilet…..

The great scholar knew everything about himself and his brother Kumbhkarna-that they used to be Jay And Vijay the gate keepers of Lord Vishnu and were cursed by 4 maharishis that they would be taking birth as Daityas and Lord Vishnu’s enemies which was latter on minimized by Lord Vishnu to 3 times and get killed by Lord Vishnu himself and regain their position as the Gate keepers of the Almighty.

Ravan also knew the Ram is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and it was his and Kumbhkaran’s 2nd life as the Daityas, and the 1st was Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashyap… And 3rd one would be Kans and Shishupaal….
And that’s the reason why Ravan went last on the Battlefield after the death of his entire family. And getting them Moksha.

Shiv Tandav Stotra featured in many films and even a clip is available on You Tube for the TV serial Ramayana’s scene, where Arvind Trivedi-doing Ravan’s role- is seen singing this stotra, but I have opted for for a clip from film ” Hero Hindustani”-1998.

The special thing about this clip is that this Traditional stotra in Sanskrit is recited by Ataulla Khan-with excellent pronunciation-, it is composed by Anu Malik and it is filmed on Arshad Warsi…all Muslims. Truly our Film industry still remains genuinely secular.

Many readers will recall that the famous bhajan ” Man tadpat hari darshan ko aaj ” from film Baiju Bawra-52 was written by Shakeel Badayuni, composed by Naushad Ali and sung by Mohd. Rafi….all Muslims. However not many will know that the famous prayer ” Aye Maalik tere bande hum ” from the film ” Do aankhen baara haath”-57 was written by Bharat Vyas, composed by Vasant Desai and sung by Lata Mangeshkar and was used as a Prayer song in many schools in Pakistan, till 1965.( extract from ‘ Ruperi Smaran Yatra’ by Prof. Subhash Savarkar ) .

So,here are the three stanzas of Shiv Tandav Stotra from the film ‘Hero Hindustani”-98. The full 15 stanzas of the Shiv Tandav Stotra are also given at the bottom.
Bolo Jai Jai Shiv Shankar……

Arun sir,

Many Thanks for the mini-series and the grand finale.

Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in reverence of the god Shiva. It is the day Shiva was married to the goddess Parvati.

Why Shivji drinks bhang,
When the ocean was churned by the Gods and the demons for acquiring the nectar, a drop of the nectar fell on Mount Madra. A plant sprouted out from the drop and the drink made from the leaves of the plant became a favourite of all Gods, including Lord Shiva. After that Lord Shiva brought the cannabis down from the Himalayas for the pleasure of mankind.
Bhang is also believed to be the sister of Goddess Ganga. That is the reason why Bhang and Ganga are said to reside side by side on Shiva’s head. Another interpretation of this story is that the plant of cannabis is actually another form of Parvati and she also resides with Shiva along with her sister Ganga.
Ancient texts often describe the Gods consuming the Soma rasa which is often said to be Bhang. However, it is not clear whether Soma and Bhang are the same thing or different drinks.
It is believed that since Shivji is always in deep meditation, Bhang helps Him to stay in a state of complete bliss and concentration. This is the reason why the sadhus and monks consume Bhang and smoke marijuana so that they can reach a blissful state and be like Shiva.
Whatever the reason may be, drinking Bhang is one of the most important activities during Shivaratri. It is believed to cure many ailments and relieve all sorts of pain. Start off with few grams of bhang. It is aphrodisiac and cheap. The whole North is going to do it.
We offer obeisance to Śhivji
