‘Dil Se’ (1998) was produced by Mani Ratnam along with Ram Gopal Varma and Shekhar Kapoor and was directed by Mani Ratnam. The film was a part of Mani Ratnam’s trilogy of human relationship in the backdrop of politics and terrorism. In this series, his earlier two films were ‘Roja’ (1992) and ‘Bombay’ (1995).

The film’s main actors consisted of Shahrukh Khan who, on a reporting assignment to North-East India, falls in love with a mysterious girl (Manisha Koirala) who is a part of a terrorist group. As a result, she remains elusive to him. His love for her becomes his obsession. He searches for her, meets her during his many assignments but she gives him a slip on each occasion. Preity Zinta is another girl with whom Shahrukh Khan’s marriage has been fixed by his family.

At the end, Shahrukh Khan finds Manisha Koirala in Delhi but comes to know about her group’s plan of exploding explosives, carried in her vest, at the venue of gathering for the celebration of 50th Independent Day. He tries hard to persuade her to give up the terrorist activities and marry him. But it was too late for her. The bomb explodes accidentally and both die before she reaches the planned target.

The film had 6 songs which were written by Gulzar and were set to music by A R Rahman. None of the song has yet been represented on the Blog. The song ‘chhaiya chhaiya’ became the most popular song of the film. However, I have preferred to present ‘jiya jale jaan jale nainon tale dhuaan chale’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The reason is that I liked the idea of incorporating in the song, the Malayalam lyrics written by Girish Puthencheri and sung by M G Sreekumar and Chorus as interlude music. The other reason is that the song has been picturised in Kerala at Athirappilly Falls, Periyar Lake and Alappuzha backwaters among others – the places I had visited in 2008.

This was the first song Lata Mangeshkar sang under the music direction of A R Rahman. Generally, she does not visit outside Mumbai to record the song. But she made an exception by flying to Chennai to record the song in A R Rahman’s recording studio. The song was recorded in one take. However, it took about 10 days for Rahman to give a final shape to the song by improvising the background music and incorporating interludes in the song.

During this period, A R Rahman came with an idea to incorporate a short clip of Malayalam song as interludes in the song. He wanted Gulzar to translate the Malayalam lyrics into Hindi. To get an idea, he played the Malayalam song over the phone to Gulzar. After listening to the clip, Gulzar advised Rahman to retain the Malayalam lyrics in the clip for the song as it sounded beautiful in the background giving a feel of the atmosphere of Kerala. Rahman agreed with Gulzar’s suggestion. The song turned out to be an unique composition. (Note: The trivia are based on Gulzar’s interviews with Nasreen Munni Kabir in 2012).

From the lyrics as well as the picturization of the song, it would appear that the song conveys the imagination of the bride (Preity Zinta) about her wedding night. The eroticism in the lyrics is nicely camouflaged in imageries. Example:

masle phoolon ki mahak mein titliyon ki kyaariyaan
raat bhar bechaari mehndi pisti hai pairon tale

I got the Malayalam lyrics and the English translation thereof from a blog post of Maithily Menon on the internet. The beauty of Malayalam lyrics may have been diluted in English translation. The translation appears to me more a literal than the underlying deeper meaning envisaged by the lyricist. Corrections, if any, in Malayalam lyrics and the English translation, from readers knowing Malayalam are welcome.

Has anyone seen today’s google doodle?!!!!

It is dedicated to our dear Mogambo a.k.a Durgaprasad Bharadwaj a.k.a Chaudhry Baldev Singh a.k.a Thakur Durjan Singh a.k.a Balwant Rai a.k.a Kishorilal a.k.a Amrish Puri.  He would have been 87 today.

Feels like they have appreciated some one close to our family. The doodle shows him in the look he sported for DDLJ – ‘Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ (1995) as Chaudhry Baldev Singh. That movie is remembered as much for the last scene where the Chaudhry tells his daughter

jaa beta jaa. Apni Raj ke paas jaa. Jaa Simran, jee le apni zindagi jaa beta jaa

The last scene can be seen on YT at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAaL5HZC5YI. The movie is remembered for this last scene, as much for all the romance and romantic songs that it had.

Can anyone forget his character ‘Dong’ in the movie ‘Tehalka’ (1992) where he kept repeating “Dong kabhi wrong nahi hota” much on the lines of “Mogambo khush hua” from ‘Mr. India’ (1987). Here I must admit that I haven’t seen ‘Tehalka’ but if I am not wrong, ‘Dong’ and his song “Shom Shom Shom Shomo sha sha” is the only thing in public memory from that movie.

There have been similar movies where this much-loved character actor, with a very distinct voice, was the only saving grace. He has played an almost equal number of benevolent characters as in the 1999 release ‘Gair’ as he has played his malevolent characters. He has tried his hand at singing (the above-mentioned song of ‘Tehalka’ was in his voice) and shaking a leg too and looked as if he enjoyed dancing.

Today’s song shows him in his dancing element. It is from the 1998 Rajkumar Santoshi produced and directed ‘China Gate’. It has music by Anu Malik with Sameer as the lyricist. The song shows him dancing in the company of the folk dancer played by Urmila Matondkar, KD Chandran, Tinnu Anand, Viju Khote, Jagdeep, Anjaan Shrivastav, Sameer Soni, and Harish Patel.

Remembering Amrish Puri in this very lively avataar

Blog Day : 3683 Post No. : 14585

18th August is the birthday of another veteran of Bollywood. She has been around from the age of 8 beginning as a child star in ‘Gunga Jumna’ (1961). She has been awarded the filmfare best supporting actress award twice and also the Life Time Achievement award. I am here talking of Aruna Irani. She turns 64 today.

Here is a song on the occasion which presents her in a different style from her usual dancing self. Also a thing to be noted is that in this clip, they have used visuals from black and white movies especially from the days when Madhubala and Dilip Kumar were a hit pair. Plus another thing that struck me was the chemistry between the two leading actresses – Shabana Azmi and Aruna Irani (playing the elder sister). The story line is somewhat based on the life of the two famous singing sisters in the industry – Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

‘Saaz’ was produced and directed by Sai Paranjpe in 1998.  Jaaved Akhtar is the lyricist. This particular song is Zakir Hussain’s composition. It is sung by Devaki Pandit.

Happy birthday to Aruna Irani.

Song – Phir Bhor Bhayee Jaaga Madhuban (Saaz) (1998) Singer – Devaki Pandit, Lyrics – Javed Akhtar, MD – Zakir Hussain

Lyrics

mmmmmmm

aaa aaa aaaaaa
aaaaaaa aaaaaaa

phir bhor bhayi jaaga madhuban
phir bhor bhayi jaaga madhuban
phir mehki hawa
phir behki hawa
phir mehki hawa
phir behki hawa
phoolon se mili phir koi kiran
aaa aaaa aaaa
phir bhor bhayi jaga madhuban
phir bhor bhayi

phir mausam ras chhalkaane laga
phir mausam ras chhalkaane laga
phir kaliyon mein rang aane laga
phir koi nadi balkhaane lagi
phir koyal mann me gaane lagi
phir goonja mere mann ka aangan
aaa aaaa aaaa
phir bhor bhayi

phir geet hawa mein ghulne lage
phir bol suron mein dhulne lage
phir raagini machli saanson mein
phir shehad ghula aawazon mein
phir jhoom utha yeh neel gagan
aaa aaaa aaaa
phir bhor bhayi jaga madhuban
phir bhor bhayi

आss आss आsssss
आssssss आsssssss

फिर भोर भई जागा मधुबन
फिर भोर भई जागा मधुबन
फिर महकी हवा
फिर बहकी हवा
फिर महकी हवा
फिर बहकी हवा
फूलों से मिली फिर कोई किरण
आss आss आsssss

आss आss आsssss
फिर भोर भई

फिर गीत हवा में घुलने लगे
फिर बोल सुरों में धुलने लगे
फिर रागिनी मचली साँसों में
फिर शहद घुला आवाज़ों में
फिर झू उठा ये नील गगन
आss आss आsssss
फिर भोर भई जागा मधुबन
फिर भोर भई

18th September 2015 is the birthday of Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi’s daughter Shabana Azmi. She turns 66 on this day.

There are many children who are known as so-and-so’s child and there are many children who make a place for themselves in public eye and then the parents are called so-and-so’s parents. That means Shabana Azmi’s Pehchaan need not be as Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi’s daughter. She is a persona by herself. Being the poet’s daughter or the veteran stage actress’s daughter only explains her artistic leanings.

July 18th is an important date in the life of atulsongaday.me. Actually it marks the eve of the birth of the blog itself. I wonder what must have been Atul ji’s sphere of activity on the day prior to this date in the year 2008 when the blog was launched. Last year on this date we were on a countdown to reach our song number 10,000. With this post, we stand at 11,295.

There are only a handful of Bollywood numbers from movies made after mid-1960s that I really long to hear. Lest I may be misunderstood, this is a statement of personal preference by this music-illiterate, not necessarily an adverse commentary on the later years’ work.

The last time I discussed my dogs was in february 2013, which was more than two years ago. My dogs were two years old at that time. Now they are four years old. So they have become twice as old as they were at that time.

Yesterday evening Vividh Bharati was playing a whole lot of songs penned by Gulzar in the last two decades. And I was like “Oh My God! What a selection to post on the upcoming occasion of Gulzar Saab’s birthday”. But then I had this problem of zeroing into the right song for the blog as each and every song was a WOW! Just when I had thought of an appropriate number the next one would follow and I felt “nahin re, this should be the one!”. In the process I had selected all the songs played in that half an hour.

So the song which I have chosen today is from a very recent (going by the unwritten standards of our blog) bollywood movie though the movie itself had its story based in Pre independence India. It showed how the common folk reacted to the Hindu Muslim tensions back then. Even feelings as tender as love was given a kick when it came to religious sentiments. (At least that is what all the movies that are placed in that period depict. Sometimes I feel that thank god we were not born back then. But then I do not think we are living any differently even now in the 2000s, are we?) But lets not get into all that and focus on the song itself.
