“Gawaiyya”(1954) is a forgotten movie and not much is known about it. This movie was directed by Seth Rambachan and workers. The movie had Surendra, Sulochana Chatterji, Vijayalaxmi, Sundar, Sapru, Heera Sawant, Kumkum etc in it. Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, has to say about this movie:
There is an intersting story behind this film Gawaiya.
Though this was a R.B.Production movie originally, it was bought and released by Musical Pictures Ltd.,after adding 4 songs of Talat Mahmood and making some changes in the script.
This Musical Pictures was a production company floated by 2 equal partners, A.R.Kardar and Naushad.
In the second half of 40s and early 50s, Naushad’s music was in full swing. He commanded the highest price of 1 Lakh per film as his fees, other than related expenses. He was so much in demand those days that producers followed him with chequebooks in their hands. Kardar’s Natak, Dillagi, Dard, Dard Dulari, Dastaan etc films had a focus on Naushad’s music more that Kardar’s direction during their publicity. Kardar was virtually forced to take Naushad as partner in his new company,Musical pictures,which produced Dastaan.
In the trailer of Dastan, shown in Theatrs at that time,it used to open with a scene showing Naushad conducting an orchestra and in the background a voice over of a chorus would shout “NAUSHAD’ ‘NAUSHAD’, 40 karod mein ek hi NAUSHAD”.
Musical pictures produced Dastaan, Jadoo, Jeevan Jyoti, Yasmin,and Gawaiya. After this Naushad and Kardar separated mutually and with respect.
Though “Gawaiyya”(1954) was a movie under a banner part owned by Naushad, this movie had music by another music director, viz Ram Ganguly.
The movie had ten songs in it. Nine songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
Here is the tenth and final song from “Gawaiyya”(1954). This is an extremely rare song. It is sung by Naresh and Taj. Naresh was the assistant music director of this movie. I am not aware about Taj. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the two singers of this song.
Shewan Rizvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ram Ganguly.
Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
I have not been able to note down the lyrics to my full satisfaction. I request our readers with keener ears to fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections as applicable.
