Mohammed Rafi – The Incomparable – 5

‘Rafi Ke Dard Bhare Geet’ is a famous genre of Rafi songs. Some of the most endearing and touching songs in Hindi films are the sad songs sung by Rafi Sb. Almost every hindi movie has a sad song. Amongst them, the soulful singing by Rafi Sb in these songs is widely acknowledgde as the best. There are many movies where Rafi Sb has only one song even when he is not the favored singing voice for the film. That song generally is a song for the second line artist, or a background song, or a title song, and in many cases, it is a sad song. Then there are many movies in which all male songs are in the voice of Rafi Sb. There are movies where he sang romantic song, light hearted song, sad song, comic song, qawwali, folk and spiritual songs for different actors. There are numerous examples for both these cases.
Just yesterday I was listening to the songs of the film ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965). I started with ‘Yahaan Main Ajnabee Hoon‘ and continued to ‘Ek Thha Gul Aur Ek Thhi Bulbul‘ and then came back again to ‘Yahaan Main Ajnabee Hoon‘. The prowess of Rafi Sb’s in singing and in sheer style, is amply showcased in this 1965 musical, set to some very lilting melodies by Kalyanji Anandji. There is that bitter sweet song “Pardesiyon Se Na Akhiyaan Milaana‘ and also sadder version of the same song. A romantic duet with Suman Kalyanpur – ‘Na Na Karte Pyaar Tumhi Se Kar Baithe‘ and the exuberant fast paced solo ‘Affoo Khudaaya‘. What more can one ask for in a music score? If Kalyanji Anandji were into qawwalis as early as 1965, they may have also added one to this film’s score.
“Yahaan Main Ajnabi Hoon‘ is the fitting equivalent of Shakner Jaikishan’s hit melancholia from ‘Brahmchari’ (1968) – “Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein Tujhko Bithaa Kar“, or the classic “Jo Unki Tamanna Hai Barbaad Ho Jaa” by Laxmikant Pyaarelal for the film ‘Inteqaam’ (1969), or the RD Burman blockbuster “Kya Hua Tera Waada“, from the film ‘Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin’ (1977), the one song that overshadowed all other melodies of this film. Not listing other deep melancholic sounds created by Madan Mohan and SD Burman for films like ‘Guide’ (1965), ‘Heer Ranjha’ (1970), ‘Sharaabi’ (1964), ‘Pyaasa’ (1957), ‘Kaaghaz Ke Phool’ (1959) etc. is quite deliberate on my part.
Rafi Sb’s ‘dard bhare geeton ka khazaana’ is huge. It is my estimate that this list of gems would be numbering to almost 750 or so. Although Mukesh and Talat Mehmood are also known for many classic sad and melancholy songs, the sheer variety of types of emotions expressed by Rafi Sb in his songs puts him in a class all by himself. His songs expressing anguish, desperation and levels of sadness are legend in Hindi film music. I have a favorites list of sad songs featuring many Lata, Mukesh and Talat songs too.
This song is from 1950 film “Kisi Ki Yaad”, which is not yet represented on the blog. The solos by Rafi Sb from this period have a fresh quality, and a primitive simplicity of emotions which is not under the influence of the larger-than-life superstars, who perform these songs on screen. The period reminds me of solos from film ‘Deedar’ (1951) sung by Rafi Sb under the direction of Naushad Sb.
This song is written by Tahir Lukhnowi and composed by Hansraj Bahl. Tahir Lukhnowi is a new name in the list of lyricists represented on this blog. (Note: There is one name listed, Tarikh Lucknowi, which seems to be a strange name. It could be Taariq Lucknowi, or maybe the names are mixed up.)
This is the first ‘dard bhara geet’ to feature in the current series.
Song – O Jaanewaale Ye Kya Kiya (Kisi Ki Yaad) (1950) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Tahir Lucknowi, MD – Hansraj Behl
Lyrics
sukh chheen liyaa. .aa. .aa
dukh chhodd diyaa. .aa
dil hansi hansi mein tod diyaa
o o jaanewaale
ye kya kiya
o o jaanewaale
ye kya kiya
lehren umdeen
saahil tootaa. .aa
dil se takra kar dil toota
haaye dil toota
lehren umdeen
saahil tootaa. .aa
dil se takra kar dil toota
haaye dil toota
manjhdaar mein laa kar
haaye chhodd diyaa
o o jaanewaale
ye kya kiya
haaye o o jaanewaale
ye kya kiya
ya pehle hi thukra dete. .e. .e
ya manzil tak pahunchaa dete
pahunchaa dete
ya pehle hi thukra dete. .e. .e
ya manzil tak pahunchaa dete
pahunchaa dete
kyun raah mein laa kar
haaye chhodd diyaa
ho o jaanewaale
ye kya kiya
o o jaanewaale
ye kya kiya
ehsaan agar karna thha tujhe. .e. .e
kyun kar na diya barbaad mujhe
barbaad mujhe
ehsaan agar karna thha tujhe. .e. .e
kyun kar na diya barbaad mujhe
barbaad mujhe
par kaat liye. .e
haaye chhodd diyaa
ho o jaanewaale
ye kya kiya

Nahm ji,
I checked with the Geet Kosh, and your guess is correct. The other name that is listed as ‘Taarikh Lucknowi’ should be ‘Tariq Lucknowi’. We shall make the required corrections to the data.
Thanks for the catch.
