Missing gems from 1950s-Song 2
———————————–

Today’s song is a Gem from the film Jhaanjhar-1953.

This was the first film produced by New Sai productions, a company floated by Chitalkar, Omprakash and his only brother Bakshi Ramprakash Chhibber (who took up the name ‘Pachhi’ later on and produced many films like Kanhaiya, Jaali Note, Naughty Boy, Mere Mehboob, Cha ch cha, Teesri Kasam, Around the world etc etc.). many people are under the misunderstanding that even Lata mangeshkar was a partner in this venture, But C.Ramchandra, in his autobiography mentions only these three names as partners. However, at the same time, C Ramchandra and Lata were partners in another company along with a man called P R Bhide, who cheated them later and also dragged both to courts. Lata and C Ramchandra came out of this without any harm, though.

When Chitalkar and Omprakash decided to form a film production company, with great fanfare, they christianed the new baby with the name “Sai Productions.” However, soon their lawyers brought this information to their notice that there was another film company with the same registered name. To avoid legal complications, the name was hurriedly changed to “New Sai Productions,Bombay “. Kidar Sharma, about whom Chitalkar had immense respect, was invited to direct the first film of this production.

This being his first film as a producer, C Ramchandra as its Music Director put in lot of efforts and spent more time in composing all the 10 songs.(originally only there were only 9 songs in it. One more song was added later, but one song was also dropped after a few days). At that time he was also doing Filmistan’s film “Anarkali” and a Marathi film on Shivaji, made at Kolhapur.Chitalkar had to visit Kolhapur frequently for this film. Once, while he was in Kolhapur, he received a legal Notice from Filmistan accusing him that he was neglecting Anarkali because of his own film Jhaanjhar. He came back to Bombay and managed to pacify Filmistan.

As Luck wold have it, when Jhaanjhar was released,it was a solid Flop, while Ararkali, when released, was hailed as a Mile stone film due to its Blockbuster Music, which became extremely popular ! C Ramchandra had really put in lot of efforts on the music of Jhaanjhar, but it is difficult to predict which music will become popular with the public. As C Ramchnadra himself had said once, “If someone can predict correctly which film will be a Hit, he will surely become a Millionaire.”

In 1953, the ‘friendship’ of Lata and C Ramchnadra had become solid and they used to move together everywhere. There was a release function of Jhaanjhar in Amritsar, so Lata and C Ramchandra went there. In the hotel room, in the night,Lata spoke to Noorjehan in Pakistan. Both spoke to each others for more than two hours. After the call was over, Lata told Chitalkar that Noorjehan wanted to meet her and next day they would meet on the ‘No Man’s Island’ between the borders of both countries. Accordingly Lata and Chitalkar reached that spot and from across the border came Noorjehan with her husband and three more people. Both the singers embraced each other and wept with joy. They all shared food brought by both groups and had a lunch under a tree. When the time came to leave again they embraced and wept. In his autobiography, C Ramchandra has described this incident with great emotions and genuine appreciation to the spirit of their friendship.

One speciality of C Ramchandra’s music was that almost in every film there would be one or two comedy songs. Even in Jhaanjhar, there were two fun songs. Besides two more songs need special mention. One was a racy tuned song by Lata and chorus-“mohe laaga saara jag pheeka pheeka”. In this song, Lata has displayed her extraordinary control over her breath. The lines and the mukhda of the song is so fast and non-stop that one wonders how Lata has done it. This technique was taught to Lata by Anil Biswas.( of late, singer Shankar Mahadevan has done it in his ‘Breatless’ songs).

The second song was an unique “Anti-Lorie”,sung by Lata with Madhubala Jhaveri. In a Lorie, sleep is invited, whereas in an Anti-lorie, sleep is asked to go away. That is why it is called Anti Lorie song. Very few such songs are to be found in HFM.

Let us now enjoy the melodious song by Lata from film Jhaanjhar-1953, truly a missing Gem !….

Wonderful song of Lataji. How effortlessly she sings lengthy mukhada & antaras in one breath ! Nice combination of words voice & tunes.
