The Many Colors of Love #29 – The Stories of Broken Hearts
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe

ik dil ke tukde hazaar huye
koi yahaan gira koi wahaan gira
(‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’, 1948)

Walking the passages of love, one encounters enchanting emotions and charming music – heady feelings that will lure heart and mind into gardens with blossoming springs, chirping birds and fragrant flowers.  But the discerning eyes will also see, the pathways strewn with fragile fragments, unobtrusively lying by the side, that tell another story.  These are the delicate pieces of broken hearts that have suffered the pains of separation and the agony of desertion, an agony that is at times, too intense for the sensitive hearts to bear.  And the feelings inside are as if the heart has been torn asunder, crushed and broken into a thousand pieces.  And then thrown by the wayside.

And a poet thus  wrote these lines,

kai tukde pade honge jo kabhi pyaar bhara dil thhe

Pray, tread the paths of love softly
Lying there would be many a broken piece
That once were a heart full of love

As we search the treasures of tales, across the histories and across races, the stories of broken hearts have been told countless of times.  Poets have written unlimited verses that tell of the betrayals and desertions in love, underscoring the human failings of being able to love another, more than the self.  Eventually, in this game of love, if everything else goes well, then the last bastion of the ego is the hardest to conquer.  And comes a time when the expectant love needs a succor and support, and unexpectedly the lover turns the back and goes away.  It is never ever the others, the world, the social circumstances that will break the heart.  Love is too strong and resilient to be afraid, for the resolve of togetherness is the power that will defy all calamities.  But when that resolve weakens and between the two hearts creeps in the insubstantial screen of false ego – that calamity is too much for the heart to bear.  Beyond that, even picking the pieces seems worthless.  There is an age old advise from the pen of the royal poet Rahim.

The delicate thread of love
Rahim says never do break it
For once broken, it won’t join again
And if joined, the knot will remain forever

So difficult are the paths of love.  The spring and the birds and flowers can always be there, but it is the love of the other above the love of the self that is the most important, and the most difficult, ingredient – for togetherness.

This beautiful song of sadness comes from 1949, the watershed year in Hindi film music.  The film is ‘Shohrat’.  The music is by Aziz Hindi and the singing voice is that of Hameeda Bano.  The film had 12 songs written by two poets – Madhup and Gulshan Zama.  The songwriter for this song is not specifically identified as yet.

Listen to this melancholy and think of your own love.  And remember, never break a heart that loves you.

Song – Dil Toot Gaya Mit Gaye Armaan Bichaare (Shohrat) (1949) Singer – Hameeda Begum, Lyrics – [Unattributed], MD – Aziz Hindi

Lyrics

dil toot gaya
haaye toot gaya
dil toot gaya
mit gaye armaan bichaare
saajan mujhe thukra ke kahaan aap sidhaare
dil toot gaya

shabnam meri taqdeer pe royegi tum aao
murjha ke kali khaaq pe soyegi tum aao
bedardi mujhe chhod gaye kis ke sahaare
saajan mujhe thukra ke kahaan aap sidhaare
dil toot gaya

khoi hui phirti hain ye majboor nigaahen
majboor nigaahen
thamte nahin aansoo mere
rukti nahin aahen
rukti nahin aahen
koi tumhen kis raah pe
haaye. .e. .e
koi tumhen kis raah pe
jaa jaa ke pukaare
saajan mujhe thukra ke kahaan aap sidhaare
dil toot gaya

.ey. .ey. .ey. .ey
tadpaa ke kahaan chal diye
koi to bataa de. .ey. .ey. .ey. .ey
aansoo mein bahe jaate hain
haaye
aansoo mein bahe jaate hain armaan hamaare
saajan mujhe thukra ke kahaan aap sidhaare
dil toot gaya
haaye toot gaya
dil toot gaya
mit gaye armaan bichaare
saajan mujhe thukra ke kahaan aap sidhaare
dil toot gaya
