Film ‘Benazir’ 1964 has eleven songs – too many by SDB standards and the 60’s fashion. The theme of a muslim social may have something to do with it. It could also be the reason that this time SDB paired with Shakeel Badayuni. Now that I have checked, SDB worked with Shakeel Badayuni in ‘Kaise Kahoon’ (1964) also. After ‘Pyaasa’ (1957), SD Burman seems to have worked with all major lyrics writers, from Majrooh, Hasrat, Kaifi Azmi, all the way up to Anand Bakshi in the 1970s, in films like ‘Aradhana’ (1969) and ‘Ishq Par Zor Nahin’ (1970).
This sixth song in this series is a Rafi solo from ‘Benazir’ (1964). It is possibly not used in the film, as the video is not available. It also falls in the category of rare songs as “excluded from the film”. I was specifically looking for a Rafi solo composed by SD Burman to include in this series. This happens to be the last such solo remaining, at least in the light / romantic category. Having short listed this song a while back, this song was in danger of going too far down in the list of drafts, and I could have forgotten it, in all this time. But since the SDB song is a must, I kept going back to it brought it forward in the drafts.
The song itself must have been meant for Shashi Kapoor, as the other solo in this film by Rafi Sb – “Dil Mein Ik Jaan e Tamanna Ne Jageh Paai Hai“.
Just listen to this song, and one has to agree that it is the inimitable style of rendition of Rafi Sb, which is the USP of this song too.
