Dil mein ek jaane tamanna ne

Posted on: July 31, 2011

On the occasion of Rafi’s death anniversary, today we are offering our tribute to him by discussing a few songs sung by him. Today we will discuss some of those gems that are not yet covered in this blog. and some of these songs are not all that well known. in fact, some of the songs to be discussed will be unknown for most music lovers.

Here is a song from “Benazir”(1964). This song was unknown for me, though not for Prakashchandra who sent me the lyrics of this song.

This movie had Shashi Kapoor and Tanuja in lead roles.

I have not seen the movie, but I guess from the picturisation that Shashi Kapoor is the next door neighbour of Tanuja and in this song, he is expressing his love for Tanuja. It is note a face to face interaction (preferably in a garden) though, where the hero sings the praises of the lady and the lady blushes. Here the lady is seated in her room in front of her dressing table, and the hero is singing this song from a distance, viz. from his own room, that seems fairly a long distance away. But the song reaches its intended audience loud and clear ! 😀

As the song continues, Tanuja comes out of her room and walks down towards the source of the song. While doing that, she realises that someone else is also watching her. She quickly tries to retrace her feet back. That someone else is Lata Sinha, who assures her that her secret is safe with her. She in fact arranges two stools , which she keeps in front of Shashi Kapoor’s main door. After climbing the stolls, they are able to watcch Shashi Kapoor singing in his room.

The song is sublime but it ends on a hilarious note. Shashi Kapoor, having done his singing, opens his main door and the two peeping Bettys (I hope it is the feminine version of Peeping Tom 😀 ) find themselves stumbling inside the room. On stumbling against Shashi Kapoor, they run back to where they came, and they find other members of their households appearing out of their rooms as well, forcing them to run back towards Shashi Kapoor. On finding Shashi Kapoor in the way, they again run back in their earlier direction of running, and this time find themselves losing their balance. This amuses Shashi Kapoor no end. As for the response of the family members of Tanuja. our knowledgeable readers will have to tell us as I have not seen the movie.

Coming to the song, this song is sung by Rafi. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. S D Burman is the music director.

Song-Dil mein ek jaan e tamaanaa ne jagah paayi hai (Benazir) (1964) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

Aaj sheeshe mein baar baar unhen
dil ki moorat dikhaayee deti hai
apni soorat nazar nahin aati
meri soorat dikhayee deti hai

dil mein ek jaan-e- tamanna ne jagah paayee hai
aaj gulshan mein nahin ghar mein bahaar aayee hai
dil mein ek jaan-e- tamanna ne jagah paayee hai
aaj gulshan mein nahin ghar mein bahaar aayee hai
dil mein ek jaan-e- tamanna ne jagah payee hai

aa gaya mere tasavvur mein koi pardanasheen
aa gaaya,
aa gaya mere tasavvur mein koi pardanasheen
aaj har cheez nazar aane lagi mujko haseen
kya kahoon main badi dilkash meri tanhaayee hai
aaj gulshan mein nahin ghar mein bahaar aayee hai
dil mein ek jaan-e- tamanna ne jagah paayee hai

behki behki nashaa-e-husn mein khoyee khoyee
behki behki nashaa-e-husn mein khoyee khoyee
jaise khaiyyam ki rangeen rubaayee koi
dil ke sheeshe mein pari banke utar aayee hai
aaj gulshan mein nahin ghar mein bahaar aaye hai
dil mein ek jaan-e- tamanna ne jagah payee hai

husn ke saamne izhaar-e-waffa hai mushqil
husn ke,
husn ke saamne izhaar-e-waffa hai mushqil
kaash chupkar hi woh sun le mera afsaana-e-dil
jisne ye pyaar ki manzil mujhe dikhlaayee hai
aaj gulshan mein nahin ghar mein bahaar aayee hai
dil mein ek jaan-e- tamanna ne jagah payee hai

I love this well picturised song for Rafi’s rendition.
As far as I know, it was one of very few occasions when Shakeel Badayuni teamed up with S D Burman, the other one I know being in KAISE KAHOON. Both these films were released in 1964.

it’s a lovely song indeed, and a treat to eyes as well. Just a little correction here, all the people appearing in this song reside in the same house. Shashi is singing the song for tanuja, who is sister of shashi’s bhabhi in this movie. And the family is very much supportive for their match. I hope this explains the response of family members.
