Mohammed Rafi – The Incomparable – 8
——————————————
“(of alcoholic drink or a drug) cause (someone) to lose control of their faculties or behaviour. ”
This is the definition of ‘intoxicated” on google.

Intoxicated. A state in which someone is incapable of normal speech, actions or thought due to the ingestion of excessive amounts of alcohol and/or drugs.

My generation grew up to think that people drink excessively or not, to seek oblivion. Classic literary example being the character of ‘Devdas’. The habit /tendency or the escapism in the weak character sought understanding and sympathy.

Oblivion is ‘ the state of being unaware or unconscious of what is happening around one. ‘
“they drank themselves into oblivion”
synonyms: unconsciousness, insensibility, stupor, stupefaction, senselessness, blankness, darkness; coma, blackout; obliviousness, unawareness, ignorance, amnesia; literarythe waters of Lethe
“he closed his eyes again and sank back into oblivion”

Must be fun wanting all the above things, for those who prefer these type of condition as opposed to being sober, aware, conscious, sensible, in touch with reality, full of knowledge, in light, in control of all faculities and enlightened.

The films and film songs have been a reflection on the times and vice versa. They have affected generations of movie watchers lives, behaviour not just outwardly in the attire and fashions, but the characters and finer point of acceptable norms of social behavior.

We are fond of making fun of party songs of movies where people are seen just standing around doing nothing and watching the hero/heroine sing piano songs. But the line could be drawn here and in some circles this type of parties or gathering were possible.

Nobody could be so creative or so prepared prepared creatively to break into a song impromptu and regale the gatherings. This could not be emulated in real life. Drinking and misbehaving in public places could still get you arrested, unlike in film songs.

The mass media of hindi films is often misleading and misguiding too. In a film like “Rang de Basanti” propagating idealism of a kind that appealed to the masses, the idealistic attitude’s still included the drinking alcohol and driving fast vehicles and often combining the two. It is a dangerous trend, the attitude’s, the acceptability of such behaviour. And it is a commercial success which was made ‘tax free’ and was made cheaper for mass consumption. It is a pertinent question, that why the idealism required /included the route of alcoholism and drunk driving.

Our bright and brilliant young filmmakers could have been a bit more responsible. Certainly as audience and the target of these consumables, we need to be much more diligent and alert, so as to see all, like some, love some, ignore a lot and just not let the kids get impressed by the harmful crap, all coming at us like “Niagara falls ” in the name of entertainment. And spend good money and a lot to time to do all this, for time is money now a days, is it not ?

The song for the post no. 8 is from the 1972 film ‘Patanga”. It has a few popular songs composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. This Rafi solo, a drnkard club song is written by Neeraj.

garq umar kar do
chhotaa safar kar do
unn ko khabar kar do
kal chale jaana hai

It is not a great song by any standars, but the singing genuis of Rafi sahab is evident in this emotive song, seeking oblivion in ‘Garq umar kar do’ , salvation in ‘chhotta safar kar do’ , recognition is ‘unn ko khabar kar do” and finally announcing the mortal nature of creation in
” kal chale jaana hai ” .

koyi na teraa hai
waqt luteraa hai
dur saveraa hai

‘koyi na tera hai ‘ expresses loneliness, ‘waqt luteraa hai’ is helplessness in the face of fate, and ‘door saveraa hai ‘ is the escaping the truth, as the dawn in far, too far and tough to reach.

Song-Pee lo aaj pee lo (Patanga)(1971) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Neeraj, MD-Shankar-Jaikishan

Lyrics

Pee lo aaj pee lo o
pee lo aaj pee lo
mar ke zaraa jee lo
zakhm-e-jigar see lo
kal chale jaana hai
pee lo aaj pee lo
mar ke zaraa jee lo
zakhm-e-jigar see lo
kal chale jaana hai
pee lo aaj pee lo

hosh mein na aana
hosh mein na aana
duniya sataayegi
kal ki jo sochegaa aa
neend na aayegi
kal ki jo sochegaa aa
neend na aayegi
kal chale jaana hai ae
koyi na teraa hai
waqt luteraa hai
door saveraa hai
kal chale jaana hai
hic
pee lo aaj pee lo

dil ko dubaa daalo
dil ko dubaa daalo
aag ke paani mein
khud ko bachaa rakhnaa hai
jurm jawaani mein
khud ko bachaa rakhnaa hai
jurm jawaani mein
kal chale jaana hai
garq umar kar do
chhotaa safar kar do
unn ko khabar kar do
kal chale jaana hai
pee lo aaj pee lo

rang pe mehfil hai
rang pe mehfil hai
pyaar ka mausam hai
pyaas bahut zyaada aa
waqt magar kam hai
pyaas bahut zyaada aa
waqt magar kam hai
kal chale jaana hai
raat mehakne de
shola dehakne de
dil ko behakne de
kal chale jaana hai
hic
pee lo aaj pee lo
mar ke zaraa jee lo
zakhm-e-jigar see lo
kal chale jaana hai
pee lo aaj pee lo
o o
