These are times to be thankful. And to feel blessed. That we are living in the times when this treasure of music was created. We continue to search and explore and continue finding gems, obscure gems, unheard gems, lost gems – songs that were once created with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal. Yes, these are times to feel blessed that these gems are available and accessible. I am really anxious about the day, and shrink away from the thought – the day when we will have no more songs of Rafi Sb to post. Life will continue, no doubt. It has a relentlessness built into it. But then, we will be carrying with us, an emptiness – that there are no more “unheard” songs to search for.
Maybe that day will come, some day. But then till that time, it is still the time to be thankful. To be thankful that there are songs, such as the one in this post, that we are hearing for maybe the first time. When I recently got the recordings of the songs of film ‘Madan Manjari’ (1961), and heard this song for the first time, I was simply besides myself with an unbelievable contentment – wow, we still have this wonderful song to be shared and posted. Searching on the net, I could immediately find it posted. And I found value in the adage that says “ignorance is a bliss”. That I was ignorant of this song; and then I became aware of it; and the pleasure this song brought to my heart. As only the voice of Rafi Sb can.
This piece is vintage Rafi Sb, and I wonder that this is not well known, that this is not included in his selections, that it has been obscured by the sands of time. Somehow I am not able to say enough about the lightheartedness I am feeling, as I have continued to listen to this song, again and again, over the past few days. The relaxed pace, the softness of expressions, the trailing sounds that leave behind an ecstatic contentment – a song that is a meaning for a life to be lived. A life to be lived in love, losing and winning the game all at the same time – “Dil Ki Baazi Jeet Ke Bhi Haare. . .”
The words of this song come from the pen of Hasrat Jaipuri. The music comes from the mind of Sardar Malik. And the underplayed elation that is carried in the voice, makes you feel the happiness of the expression. Need to know no more. Just want to continue to listen. To this voice that seems to be descending from the heavens.
Rafi Sb – 56 years treading this material existence, and 35 more since he bid goodbye to it. And I, like a small child, listening to his voice, and believing – he has been singing thus, forever before, and that he will continue to sing forever. The sound in the winds may fade away, but the sound in the alleyways of the mind will continue to play, forever and more.
