Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable – Song No. 10
—————————————————

Remembering Rafi Sahab on his 35th death anniversary :

When I heard this song for the first time a few days ago, I was looking for a Roshan song to post on 14th July for the birth anniversary of the maestro. This song when heard properly, is surely a masterpiece by its creators. I promptly wrote a post and sent it to Atul ji and Sudhir Sir, without checking properly if I got the correct ‘Roshan’. As it turned out this song is composed by Roshan Lal Khatri, and not Roshanlal Nagrath, whose birth anniversary it was on 14th July.

Seeing the three song posts appearing in this morning to mark the 35th Death Anniversay of Mohammed Rafi sahab in the blog , has managed to somehow rouse me from the lethargic state, which has set in due to inactivity in the blog, post Ramadhan, eid, travel, visits to different places, and catering to guests
and family members arriving and leaving the households, mine and my parents, who are practically my neighbors now.

So here is the song post modified to suit the occasion and remember the departed voice, that resonates from every nook and the musically inclined corner of the world or at least every place where hindi film music is heard. His departure from this temporary abode to the eternal life far above in the heavens, 35 years ago this day has left the dwellers in this world bereft of the voice to listen and the personality to revere and try to emulate. But the resonance of the voice has survived the mortality, for which we are thankful.

This song finally used in the 1986 film ‘Majboori’ but was obviously recorded much earlier. There is another reference I found that this song was originally in the soundtrack of the film ‘Aansoo’ (1972), but myswar.com has no entry for such a film.

Whatever is the story of this song and other songs of this film all composed by Roshan Lal Khatri, everyone will surely agree that this one is a masterpiece. The song itself is a tribute to Rafi Sahab’s class. I have wanted to hear it again and again ever since the first hearing. The lyricist is Qamar Kashmiri.

This is my own favourite genre of Rafi solo songs, where the recitation itself is sheer poetry.

And this is purely Rafi as no one else ever could be. With only the sitaar in prelude and interlude’s here is the masterpiece created by the masters.

Song-Na de ilzaam dil unko (Majboori)(1986) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Qamar Kashmiri, MD-Roshanlal Khatri

Lyrics

hmmm hmm hmmm
ho o o
o o o
na de ilzaam
dil unn ko o o
na kar shikwaa aa
zamaane se ae ae ae
muhabbat kam
nahin hoti ee
kabhi bhi aazmaane se ae ae
na de ae ilzaam

thehar jaao mere ashkon
na baahar aankh ke aana
thehar jaao mere ashkon
na baahar aankh ke aana aa aa
milegaa kyaa
meri haalat pe
duniyaa ko o o
hansaane se ae ae ae
na de ilzaam

badi bedard duniyaa hai ae ae
kisi ke ae gham ko kya aa jaane
badi bedard duniyaa hai ae ae
kisi ke gham ko kya jaane ae ae
maze le le ke hansti hai ae
khush hoti hai ae ae
rulaane se ae ae
na de ae ilzaam

zara se dil ke goshe mein
hazaaron gham tadapte hain aen aen
zara se dil ke goshe mein
hazaaron gham tadapte hain aen aen
zara se khoon ke
katre ko o
shiyaakat hai ae ae
zamaane se ae ae
na de ilzaam
dil unko o
na kar shikqa
zamaane se ae ae
na de ae ilzaam

Excellent! What a song! Mind blowing!
Just like some of Rafi Saheb’s private (non-film) ghazals/songs.
Reminds me of his “Ghazab kiya tere waade pe aitbaar kiya”.
Thanks a lot for unearthing this gem, Nahm Sahiba.

Nahm ji,

I was waiting for this post from you. Thanks for bringing up this wonderful song by the maestro.

The Geet Kosh does refer to the film ‘Aansoo’ as an unreleased film from the 1970s. And yes, this song is included in the list of songs of this unreleased film. The music director is the same, although the name of the lyricist is not identified.

The title of the post should be ” Na de ilzaam dil unn ko ” , in the heading as well as the songs details below the link.

Also there are a few typos in the last para :

zaraa se khoon ke
qatre ko
shikaayat hai
zamaane se ea ea
na de ilzaam
dil unn ko
na kar shikwaa aa
zamaane ea se ea ea
na de ilzaam

Kindly make the necessary changes.
