I still remember my school days when our cricket playing group used to meet every evening at the Colony recreation club. After going through the newspapers/ magazines in the library, we would hold discussions on various topics. Hindi films and their songs were naturally among the topics of discussions.
The discussions then were only in general terms and nowhere near as serious or detailed as the discussions on this blog now. We used to discuss the songs we liked and why we liked them, or songs that were popular and how one ranked them in order of our likings etc etc.
But there were some songs like ‘koi roko na deewaane ko, man machal rahaa….’ which were everyone’s favorites and everyone liked them because of the uniqueness of these compositions.
I vaguely remember that the songs from this film ‘Priyatama-1977’ were well appreciated and they were like a breath of fresh air for music lovers. This music was was soothing as well as lilting.
Songs from the film ‘Kunwaara Baap’ were already hugely popular then and ‘main hoon ghoda….’ is one of my favorite of those years.
Likewise the songs from ‘Priyatama’, ‘Julie’, ‘Udhar Ka Sindoor’, ‘Doosra Aadmi’, ‘Yehi hai Zindagi’, ‘Khatta-Meethha’, ‘Des Pardes’, ‘Swarg Narak’, ‘Kala Patthhar’, ‘Man Pasand’, ‘Swayamwar’, ‘Do Aur Do Paanch’, ‘Aap Ke Deewaane’, and ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ were refreshing change from the usual music of those days. These songs were liked by all of us who were teenagers as well as by our seniors (those going to colleges then).
Music for all these films was composed by Rajesh Roshan and they bore his signature tune and this continued further. (With ‘Yarana’, ‘Kaamchor’, ‘Shriman Shrimati’, and ‘Khuddaar’ etc. following in the Eighties)
I got to watch these films but not strictly in their order of release. I got to watch some of these films during our visit to the nearby city Akola (during vacations). All these movies were new releases. I got to watch the older movies during their weekly screening at our colony club at Vidyut Nagar-Paras. So I watched the newer films first and the older ones later. And then there are a few Rajesh Roshan movies that I have not yet watched even till date namely ‘Man Pasand’, ‘Lootmaar’ etc.
Rajesh Roshan had given us many memorable songs and the discussion about the films of ‘1970s’ cannot be complete without mentioning his unique contributions
Viz. ‘koi roko na deewaane ko…(Priyatama), chal kahin door nikal jaayen … (Doosra Aadmi), ik raasta hai zindagi…(Kala Patthar).., tere dil mein jo hota hai … (Aap Ke Deewaane).., chhodo ye nigaahon ka ishaaraa … (Inkaar), mujhe choo rahi hain..(Swayamwar).., nahin nahin koi tumsa haseen (Swarg Narak) and dilruba aa meri baahon mein aa (from Yehi Hai Zindagi), main hoon ghoda ye hai gaadi (Kunwaara Baap), pari re tu kahaan ki pari (Udhar Ka Sindoor). These songs are there in my memory since years. Listening to these songs invariable takes me down memory lane every time I listen to them.
The songs from the film ‘Julie-1975’ did not catch my impressionable mind then as compared to the other songs from the above mentioned Rajesh Roshan films may be because the film was also not suitable for viewing or discussion for children of my age then. And so its songs also did not make it to my list of ‘songs that bring back memories’.
For today’s post I am presenting herewith a song from the 1977 film ‘Ek Hi Raasta’, which was in my vague memory, but not in my collection, and when I get to listen it after a gap of many years at my Uncle’s house (on 45 rpm ‘Rajesh Roshan hits’) I develop more liking for this song.
While sharing this song I also listened to two other songs of this movie viz ‘tumse nahin pehchaan meri’, ‘dheere dheere sun more sajna’ sung by Rafi and Lata respectively which I liked and shared too.
I have not watched this movie so cannot say much about it.
I am also unable to identify the actor and the actress who are lip-syncing and performing on this song, while we can see Jeetendra, Asha Sachdev, and Jankidas there in the picturisation of this song.
‘Ek Hi Raastaa-1977’ was an ‘Uma Cine Films’, Bombay presentation and a ‘social-family drama’ movie. It was produced and directed by Mohan Sehgal and its star-cast included Jeetendra, Shabana Azmi, Vinod Mehra, Asha Sachdev, Utpal Dutt, Roohi, Indrani Mukherji, Krishan Dhawan, Jagdeep, Om Shivpuri, Meena Rai, Maruti, C.S.Dubey, Chandrima Bhaduri, Jankidas, Umrani, Mahapatra, Polsan, Pardesi, O.P.Kohli, Master Indrajeet, Satyarani, Viraj Kumar, Bhola, Master Babu and Master Asif.
It had total five songs penned by Verma Malik and music of this film was composed by Rajesh Roshan (assisted by Gyan, Kishore, and Nirmal).
As per the information available there have been four films made with this title ‘Ek Hi Raasta’ in 1939, 1956, 1977 and 1993.
From the order of the songs of this film given in HFGK this is the last song in the movie.
Let us now enjoy this lovely song sung by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal.
I would request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the actor and actress performing on this song on screen.

The lady crooner is Sujata Bakshi(she was dance assistant to dance director Kamal)and the male crooner is Rajesh.
Other guy who dances with Asha sachdeva is Appi Umrani and another guy with Janaki dass is Subroto Mahapatra
If my memory serves me right, Jeetendra loves a materialistic lady Asha sachdev (and most probably marry also in city)but Jeetendra`s Parents in his village(Utpal dutt and indrani mukherjee)forece jeetendra to marry a docile village girl Shabana Azmi.Jeetendra hates shabana, but Asha sachdev neglects Jeetendra who loves Asha sachdeva……. I may be wrong, because I have heard the story from my mother many years ago. Please correct me If I am wrong.
