“Amrit Manthan”(1934) was directed by V Shantaram for Prabhat Films Company, Poona. It had Chandramohan, Nalini Tarkhad, Shanta Apte, Suresh Babu, Kelkar, Kulkarni, Desai, Mane etc in it.
This movie had the distinction of become the first movie that ran for 25 weeks in a movie hall and thus helped coin the term silver jubilee for the first time.
We are fortunate that the print of this magnum opus is available and all the songs of this movie arae available as well.
One song from this movie has been discussed in the past. Here is the second song from “Amrit Manthan”(1934) to appear in the blog.
This song is sung by Shanta Apte. Veer Mohammadpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by K Bhole.
Only the audio is available for this song but it is clear that the song was picturised on Shanta Apte herself.
I feel that the lyricist was not available at hand while the song was being recorded and as a result words (which are often uncommon heavy duty words) not understood by the singer have been mispronounced by the singer. Moreover, I too may have noted down words incorrectly in the song. I request our readers with keener ears to help suggest corrections in the lyrics.
Can this song be called a ghazal ? If so then this song could easily be the first ghazal in Hindi movies.
Song-Kamsini mein dil pe gham ka bhaar kyun(Amrit Manthan)(1934) Singer-Shanta Apte, Lyrics-Veer Mohammadpuri, MD-K Bhole
Lyrics

phir bhi teeron kee ye hai bauchhaar kyun oon
veer iss deewaangi mein hai mazaa aa

log kehte hain ise aajaar kyun oon oon oon oon

Thanks Atul Ji, for the nice track. (fairly good quality for a sound from 1934 movie). The song is in the mould of ‘Na kisiki aankh ka noor hoon’ .
I find it a bit odd to have a ghazal like song in what could be a mythological movie !! Did you mean- it ran for 25 weeks or did it run for 25 years? ( in a given hall)?

It is a slip of the finger, of course. 25 weeks, viz silver jubilee.
