# Desh ki mitti ki khushboo # 3

It has been exactly ‘a year and a week’ now, since I received (on 12.02.2015) my first HFGK copy for the Volume –V of HFGK i.e. for the films during the decade of 1971 to 1980.
With each passing day, whenever I glance through its pages, I am reminded of the huge task still to be accomplished to get the balance songs of this period to the blog.
Well! Slowly, but steadily, this wonderful-exciting-nostalgic journey down-memory-lane – is moving on and we will continue to enjoy more and more songs from this period as days pass.
I came across this film under discussion almost in the first initial glancing of the HFGK. Earlier, I had never heard of this movie and /or its songs or any other information about this movie. But the name ‘Bhupen Hazarika’ triggered my interest and I do also draft the lyrics of this song then kept in my folder. Then, to know more about this movie I started to explore for some additional information (so I tried one of my friend in Calcutta, another one from Gujarat but studying in Assam, a local office of a E’paper of Arunachal Pradesh and a correspondent of another publication), but my efforts did not bear any fruits.
I tried all this was in order to make out the unfamiliar words in this song and also to see if I got some more information to share.
Nevertheless, we can still enjoy this song and I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the film, its songs and also provide the correct words where I have not been able to get them.
This song is from the 1976 film ‘Mera Dharma Meri Maa’ produced by the Governement of Arunachal Pradesh. This film was produced by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. This film and this song is special one as it talks about the glory of ‘Arunachal Pradesh’. Arunachal Pradesh became a State of Indian Union on 20th February 1987. Earlier it was a known as NEFA (North- East Frontier Agency) created in 1955 and later on declared a ‘Union Territory’ on 20th January 1972. (More information is available on wiki here ) It was renamed from ‘NEFA’ to ‘Arunachal Pradesh’ on 20th January 1972.
‘Mera Dharam Meri Maa-1976’ was directed by Bhupen Hazarika. It was the first Hindi Film produced by Arunachal Pradesh Government and passed by Censor board on 30.12.1976. It had Nabam Tata, Bengia Mala, Tadu Tayang, Asangla Ao, Taba Tajo, Hage Tade, Koj Rilung, Mudo Yami, Taba Heli, Taso Khampu, Mami, Taba Yapu, T.Ao, R.Tana, Mori Tem, R.R.Singh, J.M.Syiem, Hiranya Kumar, Raj-Jeet, D.K.Roy, Singh.S.Jha, Maheshwary, and Lakshman, Sarat Seleng and Joram Tajing and many others. The film had three songs penned by Bhupen Hazarika and Lakshman Dewakar.
Gumsi, Mekha, Bao Pinji, Ruma Guha Thakurta, Ila Bose and Bhupen Hazarika gave their voices to the songs. Bupen Hazarika has also done Art Direction, Scenario and Music Direction of this film. (The scenario has been based on a story by H.N.Tata)
I could summarize the film’s story in short as follows;
The film attempts to bring the people of the newly formed union Territory- ‘Arunachal Pradesh’ (which was given this new name on 19.01.1972 and changing its earlier name – NEFA).
It is based on the developmental changes taking place in a ‘Nishi Tribal’ village (then part of NEFA, India – North East Frontier Agency) of ‘early sixties’ where people are superstitious and hate modern education and modern treatment of diseases.
Also there are those few miscreants and antisocial who tries to misguide and divert people, and particularly youth and try to prevent them from the modernization and aligning with the main stream.
However a missionary Doctor, his associates, a young educated village youth protagonist and his female friend finally succeed in to educate people to understand the need for education and modern treatment.
The film has been shot at various picturesque and beautiful locations of Arunachal Pradesh. It showcased the natural beauty of Arunachal Pradesh. Through the story the film also tries to make us aware of the geography and peoples of Arunachal Pradesh and their religion, customs and traditions.
The film also includes the footage of the official ceremony, of renaming of the province to ‘Arunachal Pradesh’, held on 20.01.1972 at Ziro Town.
(This movie is available online here , and has been uploaded very recently.)
Though I watched it online (which is the most uncomfortable thing for me, because I love to watch movies in theatres only) I would have loved to watch it on a big screen.
Today’s song is sung by Ila Bose, Ruma Guha Thakurta and Bhupen Hazarika. The full video of this song is not available.
Thanking the YT uploaders for providing this song and film, let us now enjoy this song and celebrate the rich cultural diversity and heritage of our Country – India.

Truely an anthem of Arunachal. Mesmerizing. So nostalgic after listening. …. listening again and again.. an immortal creation of Late (Dr.) Bhupen Hazarika.
