“डूबी नैय्या आके किनारे”
Continuing with the alpha series of songs by Rafi Sb, I present today a lesser heard sad song from the early years of his career. The year is 1948. The young singer is just finding a foothold in the industry. The film song that will become his first popular hit happened this year – “Ik Dil Ke Tukde Hazaar Huye. . .” (from the film ‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’). Other very significant songs are also to follow in this year and the next (1949).
The impact of “Ik Dil Ke Tukde Hazaar Huye. . .”, or “Sab Kuchh Lutaayaa Hamne Aakar Teri Gali Mein” (‘Chunariya’, 1948), “Main Zindagi Mein Hardam Rota Hi Raha Hoon” (‘Barsaat’, 1949), “Suhaani Raat Dhal Chuki” (‘Dulari’, 1949), “Mohabbat Ke Dhokhe Me Koyi Na Aaye” (‘Badi Behan’, 1949), “Tere Koochhe Mein Armaanon Ki Duniyaa Leke Aaya Hoon” (‘Dillagi’, 1949), “Akele Mein Wo Ghabraate To Honge” (‘Biwi’, 1950); the impact of all these songs, and more, was still to follow.
Today’s song is from the 1948 film ‘Jeene Do’. The words are from the pen of Shewan Rizvi and the music is composed by Shuakat Husain Dehlavi. The name of music director will be more recognizable a few years hence, as this artist makes a change to his name, and is then known as Nashaad, starting with the film ‘Naghma’ (1953). Yes, these two are the same person.
Listen to this song, one of his earliest in the ‘broken heart’ genre.

Lyrics
doobi naiyyaa
doobi naiyyaa
aa ke kinaare
aa ke kinaare
doobi naiyyaa
jaayen kahaan ab gham ke maare
gham ke maare
doobi naiyyaa
badli huyi hain un ki nigaahen
dard hai dil mein
lab pe aahen
dard hai dil mein
lab pe aahen
baithe huye hain gham ke sahaare
gham ke sahaare
doobi naiyyaa
takte hain naina un ko har su
takte hain naina un ko har su
rukte nahin hain aankh se aansoo
rukte nahin hain aankh se aansoo
chhupne ko hain ab chaand sitaare
chaand sitaare
doobi naiyyaa
haath se un ka daaman chhoota
haath se un ka daaman chhoota
chanda ban ke taara toota
chanda ban ke taara toota
ho gaye jhoothe sapne saare
sapne saare
doobi naiyyaa
aa ke kinaare
aa ke kinaare
doobi naiyyaa..aa..aa..aa

Sad event in life is inevitable so when it is put in verse it becomes very very effective…Such melancholy has made some filmy songs immortal..I like this vintage song..Thank you…!

Late 40’s sad solo songs of Rafi saab are simply out of this world.
