This song has been waiting in the wings, since the day I posted “Thandi Thandi Hawaa Mujhe Chhede Yahaan”, as part of the ‘Missing Films of 1960s’ series. At first I had shortlisted this Rafi Sb’s song for that post. But then on second thoughts, I changed it and saved this song for the Rafi Sb series. Good choice, I think. This song fits in well on the ‘प’ letter position.
The film itself had the music-songwriter team, that apparently worked only on this film. Neither the lyricist – Viren Dablish, nor the music director – Sudarshan, have any other listing in the Geet Kosh volumes. This seems to be the only Hindi film that these two artists have worked for. Incidentally, Viren Dablish is also the director of this film, which is produced under the banner of Indira Films, Bombay. The star cast is led by Chandrashekhar and Sangeeta. Others in the cast are Amrit Rana, Kammo Tripathi, Surya Kumar, Bela Bose, Radheyshyam, Ratna, Saroj, Alok Verma, SR Sharma, Bagla, Srikant Sharma, Nepali, Roshan and some names that catch the eye – Dalda and Munshi ji.
The song seems to be simply a fun time pass song, with the words describing the past times of a small time pickpocket and trickster of sorts. The words tell of one Mr Y, who spends his time on the Mall Road, and describe what he does there.
A light hearted song, and a fun to listen to types. Essentially, Rafi Sb.
