INDRAASAN (Ekaadashi Mahima) (1952) appears to an obscure movie. In a few places on the internet, the film is spelled as ‘Indrasen’. I went by how the film was spelled on the publicity photographs of some scenes from the film. The film had some well-known actors of the 30s and 40s consisting of Prem Adib, Paro Devi, Ishwarlal, Durga Khote, Nand Kishore, Ranjana etc. The film was produced under the banner of Greenland Pictures, Bombay and was directed by Raja Nene.
It is clear from the title as well as the alternate title that the film belonged to the mythological genre. The mythological story may probably be related to the importance of fasting on Ekaadashi, the 11th day of Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) as well as Krishna Paksha (waning moon) during a lunar month. Mythological films generally have their own dedicated audience and the main actor Prem Adib is known to be adored by such audience. But I do get a feeling that the film did not fare well on the box office as none of the songs from the film has been widely known to Hindi film music lovers.
The film had 9 songs in it and none of them has so far been covered in the Blog. In fact, I could not locate any of the songs on YT. So, I have made a video from the mp3 clip of one song that I had and uploaded the same on YT. I am presenting the first song ‘mori angiyaa pe chhaayi bahaar balmaa’ from the film to appear on the Blog. The song is penned by Motilal (Moti B A) and is composed by Shankarrao Vyas. Asha Bhonsle, who at that time was yet to firmly establish herself as a playback singer, has ably rendered the song.
It is my guess that the lyrics of the song has a flavour of Bhojpuri folk songs. Incidentally, the lyricist Motilal (Moti B A) belonged to Deoria which is a border town with Bhojpuri speaking districts of North Bihar. Music Director, Shankarrao Vyas’s semi-classical composition is in keeping with the folk element in the lyrics. From the interlude music, I guess that the song has been picturised on a dancer.
Enjoyed the song in Asha Bhonsle’s voice of early 50s.
