JHUMKE (1946), produced under the banner of Chitra Productions was directed by J K Nanda. The main star cast comprised of Akhtar, Gajanan Jagirdar, Satish, Lalita Pawar and G N Bhat. The story of the film was written by Saadat Hasan Manto. I could not get much information about the film. Even the information on the the star cast of the film was sketchy. Luckily, I found a review of the film in one of the issues of ‘Filmindia’ of 1946. A shortened version of the review is set out below:

Charanjit (Jagirdar), a tongawala has a long pending wish to buy a pair of ‘jhumke’ (ear rings) for his wife Sundari (Lalita Pawar). One day, he buys them and reaches home with the enthusiasm to present the jhumke to Sundari. He is shocked to watch his wife being molested by his neighbour, Bansidhar. Charanjit misunderstands the situation and accuses his wife of adultery. He drives her out of the house and keeps his little daughter with him.

Charanjit, not being able to look after his daughter, takes her to his friend Jamal Khan (G N Butt), also a tongawala, to look after her. She grows up as a young college going girl, Krishna Kumari (Akhtar). In the college, Krishna Kumari faces some rowdy boys, one of them being Jagdish, a villain. He tries to woo her by all means which the villain in a Hindi film is capable of. But Kumar (Satish), being a good boy and having a soft corner for Krishna Kumari, thwarts his attempts and in the end Satish gets Krishna Kumari.

The, there is a the second part of the story which has been left behind. Sundari, who has been driven out by her husband Charanjit, turns maniac. She is out to settle the score with her molester, Bansidhar. Ultimately, she succeeds in her attempts and Banshidhar is murdered. A court drama ensues. Although the review does not give the outcome of the murder case in the court, it merely says that the whole court room drama ‘ultimately ends in a most insipid manner.’

The film had 10 songs written by Sharma and Latif. However, distribution of the songs among them is not known. All the songs were set to music by Pandit Amarnath. Out of 10 songs, as many as 9 songs were sung by Zeenat Begum (8 solos and 1 duet). None of the songs from the film has yet been represented in the Blog.

I am presenting the film’s first song ‘usne dekha maine dekha ab duniya dekhne waali hai’ sung by Zeenat Begum. The song is a fast paced one. A feature of the song’s lyrics is that as against the normal convention of repeating the refrain of the song in each antara while composing the song, three lines from the first antara of the song is also repeated in the second antara.

With this song, the film ‘Jhumke’ (1946) makes its debut in the Blog.

Song-Usne dekha maine dekha (Jhumke)(1946) Singer-Zeenat Begam, MD-Pt Amarnath

Lyrics

usne dekhaa
maine dekhaa aa
usne dekhaa aa
maine dekhaa
ab duniya dekhne waali hai
usne dekhaa
maine dekhaa aa
aankhon ke ek ishaare se
aankhon ke ek ishaare se
chhalki ab dil ki pyaali hai
usne dekhaa aa
maine dekhaa
ab duniya dekhne waali hai
usne dekhaa
maine dekhaa

unse nain milaa ke ye phal paayaa
dard liya aur dil ka chain ganwaayaa
unse nain milaa ke ye phal paayaa
dard liya aur dil ka chain gawaayaa
nadiya kinaare koi chori chori aaye re
nadiya kinaare koi chori chori aaye re
apni sunaaye aur meri sun jaaye re
apni sunaaye aur meri sun jaaye re
hasrat ye dil ne paali hai
usne dekhaa aa
maine dekhaa
ab duniya dekhne waali hai
usne dekhaa
maine dekhaa

meethi meethi preet suhaani laage
jab se nain milaaye
meethi meethi preet suhaani laage
jab se nain milaaye
mere mann ke baadal garjan laage ae ae
dil mein jab tum aaye
mere mann ke baadal garjan laage ae ae
dil mein jab tum aaye
nadiya kinaare koi chori chori aaye re
nadiya kinaare koi chori chori aaye re
apni sunaaye aur meri sun jaaye re
apni sunaaye aur meri sun jaaye re
hasrat ye dil ne paali hai
usne dekhaa
maine dekhaa
ab duniya dekhne waali hai
usne dekhaa
maine dekhaa aa

Very tuneful composition with different than normal miter. Come on Nitinbhai, where is the list of films set to music by pdt. Amarnath?

Bharatbhai,
‘Unusual metre’ that’s what I wanted to say in my write up. But I could not get these two words at that moment.
