Songs from Artiste Name Films….Second Season….No. 3
———————————————————————

What is Beauty ?

Everybody’s definition of Beauty is different. It all depends upon individual likings. Some like good eyes, some like long hair, some like a round and attractive face….long nose…good smile… etc etc. Because of this, Shakespeare ended this debate by saying ” Beauty lies in the beholder’s eyes”. In other words, to each his own. However, there are many who go by the majority.

There have always been debates in the film industry as to who is the most beautiful actress and as expected there was no common answer. In the early times of cinema neither the audience nor the filmmakers ever bothered about the beauty of the actresses. In the 30’s, the stress was on film producing company names and the story of the film. It was in the 1940s that the point of beauty of the film heroine took prominence. When one sees the magazine and newspaper advertisements of that time, one notices this point.

During the 40’s decade two actresses were declared beautiful. One was Naseem Bano- who was called ‘ Pari Chehra” (face of the Fairy), and the other was Ragini- who was called “Aahoo Chashm” (Magical Eyes). Ragini’s eyes were Brown, which is a rarity. in all those years, there have been only three actresses, who had brown eyes. One was Vanmala, the second was Kamla Kotnis and the third was Ragini. However, it was only Ragini, who was given extraordinary publicity through newspapers, Hoardings and magazine articles, of being the ” Aahoo Chashm ” !

Ragini was born Shamshad Begum, on 11-12- 1923, at Gujranwala, in a bazaar, where, to quote that great sage, Agha Hashr, “Days are dormant and nights wide awake.” Her mother named her Shamshad Begum, and her father, Seth Diwan Parmanand, happily allowed a Muslim name. But, her mother died during her childhood, and Diwan took this young girl from Gujranwala to Lahore.

Even this early, Ragini had the looks that made her noticeable. In those days, the classical sense of beauty was quite different. Large, sparkling eyes and a fair complexion was enough for any girl in the films to be termed beautiful. Aahoo Chashm Ragni and Pari Chehra Naseem (Saira Bano’s mother) were both considered the epitome of beauty, although young people question those attributes today as “just average”. Ragini had Brown eyes. In Indian cinema there were only 3 Heroines who had such Brown eyes. Ragini was one, Kamla Kotnis was second and the third was Vanmala.

Ragini was not able to go to school for undisclosed reasons, although she had a happy childhood. Diwan Sahab’s good friend, Roop K. Shorey was a well known film maker, and one day, while visiting his house, he noticed the girl child. “Isn’t she cute?” he said. “She has the looks of a fine film actress.” Although Diwanjee had some reservations about allowing the girl to join the industry, Shorey pledged that he would look after her at every step of the shootings. In those days, there were very few girls in the industry. To find a seventeen year old girl as the heroine meant that you had hit the jackpot.

Shorey cast Shamshad as Ragini, in Kamla Movietones’ Punjabi film, Dulla Bhatti in 1940. M.D. Kunwar was the hero, while Ragini played Nooran in the film. It was a hit and people were spellbound by her charm. Her next film, Sehti Murad did not make such a bang. She also did ‘himmat’ and ‘Raavipaar’. Later, she worked in many films before Partition, including her first Hindi film,Nishani-42,,naila,Anarkali,Poonji, Kaise Kahoon, Dasi, Shirin Farhad, farz and others. In Kardar’s film, Shahjahan, Ragini played Mumtaz Mahal, while her first hero, M. D. Kunwar, who had done Dulla Bhatt’s role, characterized Shahjahan with great aplomb. Kunwar was so enamoured of Ragini that he had requested Kardar for the role, to be close to Ragini. Unfortunately, Ragini did not respond to his romantic advances, and Kunwar sank himself in perpetual drunkenness, which led to his getting infected by tuberculosis and his death soon after that.

After Kardar’s Shahjhan, Ragini did a few more films before Partition, namely Nek Parveen, Farz, etc. Amongst these, director Niranjan’s film, Farz was Sudhir’s first film too, and Ragini played the lead with him. Ragini acted in 14 Hindi films, before her migration. Ragini got married to mian Mohd. Aslam in 1945 and took a break to raise a family. After Partition, she migrated to Pakistan and was welcomed with open arms in Pakistan. She worked as the heroine in films like Mundri, Akeli, Nazrana, Beqarar, Shararey, Mumtaz and Zanjeerin Pakistan. Radio Pakistan , during its creative days, used to play the hit songs of Beqarar, Naukar and Bedari in the 1960s. The song from producer S. Gul and director NazeerAjmeri’s 1950 film, Beqararis, still played on the radio. Dil ko laga ke kaheen thokar na khana. It was sung by Ali Bux Zahoor and Munawwar Sultana, and remains one of the earliest hit duets of Pakistani films.

Ragini was an expressive character actress, who did a variety of roles in films like Husn o Ishq, Anarkali, and Aab e Hayat She made a perfect Mumtaz Mahal in Naseem usSaqlain’s Taj Mahal, although she wore a half veil in some of the scenes. It was a remarkable spectacle, but flopped because the local audience could not understand its historical significance. A huge expense to uplift it, with superb costumes, apart from the details taken care of during the royal procession shown in the film, are its high points. Ragini was able to use her arching eyebrows and expressive eyes brilliantly in Taj Mahal. Much has been written about her intimacy with famous producer, S. Gul, but he always maintained and proved by his actions that he had sympathy and reverence for her and shared her grief and heart felt fondness for the good times she had spent in the undivided India.

Ragini was invited to India to do two films,Chamkee-52 and Insaan-52. She completed these and went back to Pakistan. Later she divorced her first husband and married producer Gul. Her last days in Pakistan were very sad. She was thrown out of her house by her Son in Law,as he did not want an actress in his house. She spent her last days in a small room in Lahore and died unsung on 27-2-2007 at the age of 85 years. (information collated from various sources like pak.mag, cinerang by Isaq Mujawar, muVyz, HFGK,Flashback, Chanderi Smriti Chitre by Samant, upperstall with thanks and my notes)

Today’s song is from the film Ragini-1945. Actress Ragini was not in the film. The film cast consisted of Smriti Biswas, Najam ul Hasan, Pran, Aruna Devi, Gyani ji, Roofi and many others. The film was made by Maheshwari Pictures, Lahore and was directed by Shankar Mehta. He directed only 4 films in his career-Pagli -43, Ragini-45, Aai Bahar-46 and Rokshawala–60 ( for which he was also one of the producers). The music was by Pt. Amarnath – the eldest brother of Pt. Husnlal and Pt. Bhagatram.

The Hero of the film Ragini (RAGNI, as per the HFGK)-45 was Najam, who was (in)famous for eloping with Devika Rani of Bombay Talkies. Najmul Hasan was born on 5-9-1910, into a noble family of Lucknow. He was tall and very handsome and was bitten by the urge to act in the films. He left his Law studies and headed for Bombay. He met Sarojini Naidu, who was a family friend. She strongly recommended his name to Himanshu Rai. His Screen test was taken in which he passed. Though at first sight, Himanshu Rai was not impressed with his manner of behaviour, he still selected him for the First film of Bombay Talkies, opposite Devika Rani in Jawani ki Hawa-1935.

During Jawani ki Hawa-35- which was loosely based on Agatha Christie’s “Murder On The Orient Express”, published in 1934 only- Devika Rani fell in love with Najmul Hasan and they decided to elope. Their second film- Jeewan Naiyya-36 went on floor and the love birds flew to Calcutta. There was a great commotion in Bombay Talkies. Shashdhar Mukherji the production manager was close to his Bengali Boss Himanshu Roy. Mukherjee traced the couple to Calcutta, met Devika Rani and convinced her to return to Himanshu. Devika Rani returned, Himanshu Roy pardoned her, but not Najmul Hasan.

Najmul Hasan did not come back to Bombay. He joined the New Theatres in Calcutta and did films like Anath Ashram-37,Dushman-38,Kapal kundala-39,Jawani ki Reet-39, and Nartaki-40. Even in Calcutta, Najmul Hassan had a rocking affair with superstar Jahan Ara Kajjan. After doing the film Meenakshi-42, Najmul Hasan did some films like Daasi-44 , Ragini-45 and kaise Kahoon-45 in Lahore and then he decided to migrate to Pakistan in 1947. In Pakistan he did some films like Eid-1951, Ashiyana, Doctor, Mirza Jatt, Taxi Driver and Heer Ranjha etc.

Najmul Hasan, a very bitter man for the treatment he received in Pakistan, died in 1980 in Pakistan. (Based on information from सुंदर ती दुसरी दुनिया by Ambarish Mishra, pak.mag, The magical world of Bombay Talkies by Lalit Joshi with thanks and my notes)

Today’s song is sung by Zeenat Begum, who was not only a find of Pt. Amarnath, but also his main singer for many of his films.

Today’s song is from the film Kaise Kahoon-1945.

To start with, Bombay was the first film making centre followed closely by Calcutta. Slowly, some other centres like Madras, Coimbatore, Poona, Bangalore etc. as occasional film centres also developed. In 1924,i.e. 11 years after the first silent feature film was released in Bombay, Lahore made its first silent film-“The daughters of Today”. It was made and released in Lahore. This film was made by Mr. G K Mehta, a former officer of North Western Railways, who had imported a Camera from London. A R Kardar, who was making posters for foreign film productions and who was a qualified well known Calligrapher, assisted Mehta. Kardar and his friend Ismail both also acted in that film.

In 1928, Kardar, with no other work on hand, decided to start a film making studio and a production company called ” United Players Corporation” to make films. He made 12 silent films in Lahore, thus bringing Lahore’s name on the map of film centres in India. Therefore, Kardar can be called the architect of Lahore film industry, in a sense. Slowly Talkie films were planned in Lahore. Dalsukh Pancholiestablished his studio. The making of films like Khazanchi, Khandan and Zamindar firmly established Lahore as a Film making centre. Many films like Poonji, Daasi etc were made there. Punjabi aspirants in various fields like acting, direction, music, singing, cinematography etc found Lahore convenient to start careers, rather than going to Bombay all the way.

Film Kaise Kahoon – 45 was made by Pancholi Art Studio, Lahore which had earned All India fame with its highly successful films. As per Baburao Patel’s review in Film India magazine January 1945, the film’s story was by Dalsukh pancholi himself. He had also written the story for another hit film Daasi-44 earlier. Patel said in his review that ” Pancholi stole ideas from foreign films “. Whether True or not, the treatment Pancholi’s films gave to the stories was certainly loved by the audience all over India, so there was no problem. The film was directed by foreign trained Moti B Gidwani, who directed 17 films in his career. It is interesting to know, however, that his first film as a director, ” Midnight Girl -29″ was a resounding flop and it caused the film maker company- Maharashtra Film company of Kolhapur to close down. It also caused a group of 5 people to leave the company earlier and start their own Prabhat Film Company, at Kolhapur.

Cast of the film was Ragini, Najmul Hasan, Akhtar, Jagirdar, Durga Mota etc. Ragini was famous and popular. She was one of the two actresses of Hindi films, who had Brown eyes, the other being Vanmala. The hero Najmul Hasan was a compromise actor, who had become infamous due to his elopement with Devika Rani of Bombay Talkies. She returned to her husband and he was left high and dry ! Baburao Patel described him as ” an overfed Owl ” !

One name in the cast is that of Durga Mota. His real name was Durgaprasad. Due to his heavy build he was nicknamed Mota(fat). He was a permanent member of Pancholi films as a comedian. It is very sad that his career ended in a gruesome way. In 1947, after Partition, there was an exodus of millions from Lahore to India. Durgaprasad also wanted to shift to Delhi. He went to Lahore station to catch the train. Suddenly, a frenzied mob of rioters invaded Lahore station and they started killing all the passengers waiting to go to India. People started running to save life. Due to his fatness, Durgaprasad could not move faster and was caught by the mob, who cut him in pieces on the Lahore Railway station platform itself.

The film was released on 16-11-45 ( 75 years ago to the date, almost), in Imperial Cinema, Bombay. The story of the film, as adapted from the Film India magazine review by our Sadanand kamath ji, was – A doctor (Gajanan Jagirdar) has a son and two grown up daughters – Geeta (Ragini) and Basanti (Baby Akhtar). The son who was in Burma is expected to return home, However, he is accidentally killed by Pradeep (Najam ul Hasan) without knowing the identity of the deceased. As it often happens in Hindi films, coincidentally, Pradeep lands in a doctor’s house for an overnight stay. He falls in love with Geeta instantaneously. The overnight guest becomes a permanent attachment. Basanti, the younger sister of Geeta, is also happy about her sister’s love for Pradeep.

As usual in Hindi films, when the love reaches a finale, a villain, a zamindar (probably Ajmal) steps in the picture. He comes to know about the accidental death of the doctor’s son and the killer who is none other than Pradeep. After a lot of suspicions and misunderstanding, the things get cleared and Pradeep gets his fiancee Geeta.

The music of film kaise Kahoon-45 was by a veteran Pt. Amarnath Batish. I am purposely calling him Batish, because there was another MD with the same name of Pt. Amarnath Chawla. They were obviously different, but were a case of ” Same Name Confusion” because both never wrote their full names. In this matter Marathi actresses never became a case of SNC, because they all used their surnames, like Shanta Apte and Shanta Hublikar, Nalini Tarkhad and Nalini Jaywant, Leela Chitnis and Leela Chandragiri etc. etc. This made matters clear and easy to identify.

In 1931 the first Talkie film was released. There were seven songs in this film. With this film, along with the existing Film Industry an additional Music Industry also came into existence. The early film makers understood the importance of music in India. Music, Instrumental or Vocal had secured the Royal Patronage from the kings and Nawabs. For the common people Gramophone records were providing musical entertainment. Occasional open air dramas and music concerts too were popular. By the 30’s decade the NFS (Non Film Songs) became a craze and several popular singers churned out their records.

Music became an integral part of Hindi films. Famous filmmakers like Prabhat, Ranjit, New Theatres, Madon Theatres, Bombay Talkies, Saraswati Cinetone etc. also helped in promoting film music. Initially Film music was greatly influenced by Parsi Theatre, and Marathi and Gujarati Natya Geets as well as Folk songs. This was successfully changed by Ghulam Haider with Punjabi Music in Lahore and Naushad with UP folk music in Bombay. Pt. Amarnath and his younger brother pair of Husnlal-Bhagatram carried forward the Punjabi music.

Amarnath Batish was born in 1912 in Jalandhar. He started his career as an actor and singer on stage dramas. He was a good Harmonium and Tabla player. He started his career with HMV as an Orchestra Director, in Delhi. Master Madan, the child Prodigy recorded few Punjabi songs under his baton.

It was natural that Amarnath joined Films. His first film was Roop K Shorey’s Nishani-1942. Pandit ji had discovered Naseem Akhtar. She and Shamshad begum sang songs for him. In the same year, his first Punjabi film Govandi-42 was released. His new find Zeenat Begum sang in it. Even Amarnath sang a song ” Pagadi utaar jatta” along with S D Batish and chorus in it. However, the British government banned this Patriotic song. The film was a hit film. Film Daasi-44 was his most popular film. All songs became hits. He did a film Irada-44, in Calcutta in which he introduced Hemant Kumar in Hindi films.

Simultaneously, he was giving music to Punjabi films too like Koel-44 and Gul Baloch-45.During the 40s decade Pt. Amarnath was the most busy composer, with a line up like- Nishani-42, Paapi-43, Irada-44, Daasi-44, Panchhi-44, Shirin Farhad-45, Ragini-45, Kaise Kahoon-45, Dhamkee-45, Sham Savera-46, Shalimar-46, Shehar se door-46, Jhumke-46, Aai Bahar-46, pagdandi-47, Mirza Saheban-47, Roop Rekha-48 and Ek Teri Nishani-49.

He gave music to 18 Hindi films, composing 152 songs in all. Due to his success, he started taking drinks, which became his nemesis. At the time of film Pagdandi-47, after a few songs, he was replaced by Khurshid Anwar. Even in his last two films Roop Rekha-48 and Ek teri nishani-49 after a few songs, he was replaced by other MDs. Film Patjhad, which he had signed, was given to Ghulam Haider.

During the making of the film Mirza Sahiban-47, Pt. Amarnath died at the age of just 35 years, on 20-2-1947. The balance songs were done by Husnlal Bhagatram.

(Adapted with thanks, from Film Sangeetkar by Prof. Yadav, an article by Sharad Dutt in milleniumpost.in, Dhunon ki yatra by P.Raag, HFGK, muVyz and my notes).

So far, 2 songs of this film were discussed. Today’s song is the third song here. I would say, songs of this film do not conform to the fame of Pt. Amarnath for giving melodious songs. But then, every song of every film can not be of the same quality.

“Panchhi” (1944) was directed by Barkat Mehra for N I Studio, Lahore. This “social” movie had Ajmal, Manorama, Hari Shivdasani, Salma, Gulam Qadir,Salim Raza etc in it.

The movie had ten songs in it and these songs were as obscure as the movie itself.

Two songs from the movie has been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from “Panchhi”(1944) to appear in the past. HFGK is silent about the details of this song, but the uploader mentions Zeenat Begam as the singer and Manohar Sahrai as the lyricist. Music is composed by Pt Amarnath.

I have not been able to get a word(may be more) right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blank as applicable.

song-Unhone muhabbat ki duniya mita di (Panchhi)(1944) Singer-Zeenat Begam, Lyrics-Manohar Sehrai, MD-Pt Amarnath

Lyrics

Unhone muhabbat ki duniya mita di
meri bekasi ne jawaani luta di
unhone muhabbat ki duniya mita di
meri bekasi ne jawaani luta di
unhen kya khabar hai ae ae ae ae
unhen kya khabar hai
mere haal e dil ki
mere haal e dil ki
ke zakhmon ne naasoor ban ke saza di
ke zakhmon ne naasoor ban ke saza di
wo jab yaad aaye
to ashqon ne meri
jhadi aansuon ki wahin par lagaa di
wo jab yaad aaye
to ashqon ne meri
jhadi aansuon ki wahin par lagaa di

saraapa hoon tasweer main bekasi ki
saraapa hoon tasweer main bekasi ki
ye tasweer jisne banaayi mita di
ye tasweer jisne banaayi mita di
mere aashiyaane mein bijli giraa kar
bijli giraa kar
ye kisne mere dil ki basti jala di
ye kisne mere dil ki basti jala di
unhone muhabbat ki duniya mita di
meri bekasi ne jawaani luta di

The box office successes of ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’ (1960) and ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963) were mainly attributed to musical bonanzas they offered to the cinegoers in general. In that process, the captain of the ships, i.e., the director of the films who had an important role in making the films the box office success was largely ignored. In those days, like many, I identified the first film with Guru Dutt and the music director Ravi. In case of ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963), I identified the film with the musical and lyrical feasts of Roshan and Sahir Ludhianvi. I was not aware at that time that these two successful films were directed by M Sadiq.

After few years when I did come to know of M Sadiq, I thought of him as a new upcoming director who specialised in directing Muslim social and historical films. This was borne out of the facts that his subsequent two films were ‘Bahu Begum’ (1967) and ‘Noor Jahan’ (1967). How wrong I was!

Last year, while doing a research on producer-director  AR Kardar, I became aware of the fact that M Sadiq (10/03/1910 – 03/10/1971) started his filmy career as early as 1932 as screen-play writer for Punjabi film, ‘Heer Ranjha’ (1932) which was a debut film for AR Kardar as the director of a talkie film.

After 1932, there appears to be a big gap in his filmy career if I go by his filmography. However, browsing through many pages of various ‘Filmindia’ issues gives me an indication that M Sadiq assisted AR Kardar all through 1932 to 1942 in his various directorial ventures, in various capacity – story/screen-play/dialogue writer, editor in addition to being one of his regular Assistant Directors.

By 1942, M Sadiq had become one of the two key assistants to AR Kardar along with SU Sunny. (SU Sunny later directed films like ‘Udan Khatola’ (1955), ‘Kohinoor’ (1960) and ‘Paalki’ (1966)). Baburao Patel, Editor of ‘Filmindia’ magazine had described them as ‘the left hand and the right hand of AR Kardar’ without identifying as to who was left hand and who was the right hand. He had also nicknamed them as ‘little Kardars’.

When AR Kardar set up his film production company, Kardar Productions in 1942 with his maiden film ‘Sharda’ (1942) as a producer-director, he gave an additional responsibility to M Sadiq as the film editor. In his next film, ’Namaste’ (1943),  AR Kardar entrusted  M Sadiq and SU Sunny to jointly direct the film. Kardar’s ‘Jeewan’ (1944) appears to be the first film which M Sadiq directed independently. However, this film did not do well on the box office. In the same year, Jaimini Dewan Productions gave him the opportunity to direct ‘Rattan’ (1944). The film became a box office bonanza for its producer. However, the credit for the success of the film was mainly given to the musical scores by Naushad.

From 1946 through 1950, M Sadiq directed 8 films which included ‘Shaam Savera’ (1946), ‘Daak Bangla’ (1947), ‘Kaajal’ (1948), ‘Chaar Din’ (1949) and ‘Sabak’ (1950), the last mentioned film was his first home production under the name of Sadiq Productions. In the 1950s, he directed 11 films, mostly his home productions like ‘Saiyaan’ (1951), ‘Shabaab’ (1954), ‘Musafirkhana’ (1955), “Chhoo Mantar’ (1956), ‘Mai Baap’ (1957), ‘Duniya Rang Rangeeli’ (1957) and ‘Khota Paisa’ (1958).

However, many of his home production films did not fare well on the box office. When Guru Dutt started ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’ (1960), being a Muslim social film, he wanted the film to be directed by a Muslim director who was well versed in Lucknowi etiquette. Those days, M Sadiq had a lot of financial difficulties and Guru Dutt wanted to help him (as mentioned in Nasreen Munni Kabir’s documentary ‘In Search of Guru Dutt’).

‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’ (1960) was a box office hit film. However, the credit for the success of the film went mainly to the musical scores of Ravi with the lyrics of Shakeel Badayuni. In Hindi film industry, a director working for a producer who also happens to be an ace director would remain in his shadow. For, the people will always have a doubt whether the ace director was a ‘shadow director’ of his own film. The song sequences in the film as Abrar Alvi puts it “. . .bear the stamp of Guru Dutt. . .” (Source: ‘Ten Years with Guru Dutt’). This kind of aspersions were also made in the case of  Radhu Karmakar who directed RK Films’ ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’ (1960) and of Abrar Alvi himself who directed Guru Dutt’s ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ (1962).

In spite of the success of ‘Chaudhavin Ka Chaand’ (1960), M Sadiq did not get offers for directing the films until ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963). Once again the success of this film did not help him in his career as in this case also, the credit for the success of the film was mainly shared by its super hit songs composed by  Roshan on the lyrics of Sahir Ludhianvi.

I feel that  it was unfortunate that the film industry did not recognise the contribution of M Sadiq in the success of  films like ‘Rattan’ (1944), ‘Shabaab’ (1954), ‘Chadhavin Kaa Chaand’ (1960) and ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963). I have seen all these films and I feel that M Sadiq had done a wonderful job as a director. Guru Dutt was indeed a master craftsman in picurisation of songs. He may have done the song picturisation himself in ‘Chaudhavin Ka Chaand’ (1960).

In my view, M Sadiq was not a novice in picturisation of song sequence in the films. Having experience of directing films for 20 years at the time when he directed ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963), I do not think that he would not have done justice to the song sequences of ‘Chaudhvin Kaa Chaand’ (1960). Just note how beautiful was his picturisation of the song Paaon Chhoo Lene Do Phoolon Ko Inaayat Hogi. It is a difficult situational song where Pradeep Kumar’s open romantic proposal has to be  met with a restrained modesty of the heroine Bina Rai. In this song, the director has also to make the sequence of picturisation interesting with an added handicap of the expressionless Pradeep Kumar. Nonetheless, the director had succeeded at least for me as it is one of those songs where I like to watch and listen on the video clip rather than listening on the mp3 clip.

Again, after the success of ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963), M Sadiq had to wait for another 4 years to get the directorial assignments of ‘Bahu Begum’ (1967) and ‘Noor Jahan’ (1967). Unfortunately, both these films, despite good musical scores, did not fare well at the box office. Sometime in 1970, M Sadiq migrated to Pakistan and directed the film ‘Baharon Phool Barsaao’ (1972) under his own banner, Sadiq Productions. In a couple of Pakistani articles on the migration of film artists, it has been mentioned that M Sadiq came to Pakistan on an assignment to make ‘Bahaaron Phool Barsaao’ (1972). However, when the film was more than half way through, he left for the heavenly abode on 03/10/1971 in Lahore.

Today, I am presenting a multiple version song, “Meri Mitti Ki Duniya Niraali. . . Jahaan Bhagwaan Basen’ from the film ‘Shaam Savera’ (1946) which makes a debut on our blog today. The film was directed by M Sadiq. The star cast included Swarnalata, Wasti, Sulochana Chatterjee, Rafiq Ghaznavi, Badri Prasad, Pratima Devi  etc.

I became aware of this song only a few days back when I heard it in the voice of SD Batish. I immediately fell in love with the song for its rendition and the lyrics. In fact, its first verse led me to minutely grasp the subsequent part of the lyrics. As I was planning to present the song for the blog, somewhere I got confused with the film ‘Subah Shaam’ (1944) which has already made a debut on the blog. Since this film is not in the verge of attaining the status of a ‘yippied’ film, I felt that there was no urgency in presenting the song.

Yesterday, I heard this song once again. But this time, it was in the voice of Rafiq Ghaznavi. After checking on the website, it transpired that it was a multiple version song. It was at this stage I realised that the song in reference was from ‘Shaam Savera’ (1946) which is yet to make a debut on the Blog.

In my 3 decades of trekking in the Himalayas for soaking in the nature, I had always felt that there is Godliness in the nature – “jahaan bhagwan base”.

====================

Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Pt Amarnath.

Ony the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.
