During the last few weeks, I have started keeping a tab on Radio’ Ceylon’s special programme ‘Puraane Filmon Kaa Sangeet – Kam Sune Ansune Gaane’ which is broadcasted at 7.30 a.m. on Wednesdays. It is in this prograame that I get a chance to listen to some of the rare songs. However, most of the time, I find that such songs have already been covered in the Blog. As I had said in one of my earlier articles, even if there are a few such rare songs in the programme which have not yet been represented in the Blog, I generally like to pick up only those songs which sound melodious to me and have good lyrics. With these backgrounds, nowadays, it is difficult to find rare songs in the programme which I can pick up for the Blog.
Today (October 19, 2016), I found not one but two melodious songs in the Radio Ceylon programme. Neither the songs nor the films have yet been covered in the Blog. I take this opportunity to present one of those songs which is from the film ‘Sajni’ (1947).
SAJNI (1947) was produced under the banner of Bharat Productions. The film was directed by B R Mudnaney. The star cast included Brijrani, Baburao, Bibi, Ghory, Gadagkar, Bhudo Advani, Mumtaz Ali, Shamu, Kathana etc. Not much information about the story of the film is available online. Going by the star cast, I guess it may be a ‘B’ grade film.
The song I am presenting is ‘zaalim tera khayaal sataaye to kya karoon’ which is rendered by Rajkumari Dubey. There were 11 songs in the film, all penned by Raazi Banarasi. The songs were composed by L Amar and Afzal Lahori. The distribution of songs among two music directors is not known. However, as per the announcement of the Radio Ceylon programme referred to above, the song under discussion was composed by Afzal Lahori.
The song under discussion may have been inspired from Hafiz Jalandhari’s ghazal written in the same metre, kaafiya (rhyming) like ‘jaaye’, ‘bataaye’ and radiff, ‘kya karoon’:
Dil se tera khayaal na jaaye to kya karoon
Main kya karoon koi na bataaye to kya karoon
But this does not detract from the credit that the singer, lyricist and the composer deserve for this creation. All of them have contributed in making the song melodious.
With this song, the film ‘Sajni’ (1947) makes its debut in the Blog.
