Hullo to all the ek din ka gods

My salutation is such because Indian culture (as seen in Indian movies) has taught us that Pati Parmeshwar hota hai. i.e. husbands are to be treated as Gods. I am sure no lady will object to this if the husbands also treat their wives as devis- meaning Goddesses. But we will not get into this discussion on this auspicious day.

Today is the day of Karva Chauth. Being a south Indian I don’t know anything about the religious aspects of this festival. What little knowledge I have is all thanks to the Bollywood movies. And going by what is seen in each of them I understand (and am ready to be corrected) that it is basically a fast which married woman undertake and pray for the longevity of their husbands. They keep dawn to dusk fast which is broken with a sip of water given to them by their husbands after the moon is sighted. Now the markets on the days leading to this festival are full of sieves (challni), small earthen pots (I think that is the Karva), diyas and chunnars. Also I have noticed that the markets are full of mehndi artists on this day as also the previous day. I noticed that it is a fast undertaken by practically every north Indian lady no matter which state. The closest that we southies have anything to this festival is what we celebrate in the month of Feb or March. But of course the method of observing the fast differs.

These days there are a number of jokes thanks to the over-worked brains of some people. And we are bombarded by the jokes the best of which is (IMHO)

Chitragupta to Yama (god of death): sir I am having a problem with keeping a balance of men on earth. The ladies are fasting and asking for the same husband in every birth.
Yama to Chitragupta: no problem, just tell them the deal is they will have the same Mother-in-Law too.

The following song is completely dipped in the fervor of Karva Chauth. It is from the 1999 Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed “Ham Dil De Chuke Sanam”. It is written by Mehboob and Ismail Durbar is the music director. It is sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. It is pictured on Aishwarya Rai, Salman Khan, Smitha Jaykar and others.

Happy Karva Chauth.

Song-Chaand chhupa baadal mein sharma ke meri jaaan (Ham Dil De Chuke Sanam)(1999) Singers-Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Lyrics-Mehboob Kotwal, MD-Ismail Darbar

chaand chhupa
baadal mein
sharma ke meri jaanaaa

aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa

chaand chhupa
baadal mein
sharma ke meri jaanaaa aa aa
seene se lag ja tu
bal khaa ke
meri jaanaaa
gumsum sa hai
gupchup sa hai
madhosh hai
khaamosh hai
yeh samaa
haan yeh samaa
kuchh aur hai
o ho ho
chaand chhupa baadal mein
sharma ke meri jaanaaa aa aa
seene se lag jaa tu
bal khaa ke meri jaanaaa

najdeekiyaan badh jaane de
arre nahin baaba nahin
abhi nahin nahin nahin

ye duriya mit jane de
arre nahi baba nahi baba
abhi nahi nahi nahi
dur se hi tum ji bhar ke dekho

tum hi kaho kaise dur se dekhoon
chand ko jaise dekhta chakor hai
aye gumsum sa hai, gupchup sa hai
madhosh hai, khamosh hai
yeh sama, yeh sama kuchh aur hai
ho ho ho
chaand chhupa badal mein
sharma kejaane jana

seene se lag ja too
bal khake meri jaaana

aaja re aaja
chanda ki jab tak tu naa aayega
sajana ke chehre ko dekhne yeh man tarsa jaayega

naa naa chanda tu nahin aana too jo aaya toh
sanam sharma ke kahi chala jaaye naa
aaja re aaja chanda
too lakh duwaye payega

naa naa chanda too nahi aana
varna sanam chala jayega

aanchal mein tu chhup jaane de
arre nahin baba nahin baba,
nahin nahin nahin

zulfon mein tukho jaane de
arre re nahin baba nahi baba,
abhi nahin nahin nahin
pyaar toh nam hai sabr kaa humdam

wo hi bhala bolo kaise karen ham
saawan ki raah jaise dekhe mor hai
rehne bhi do
jaane bhi do
ab chhodo naa
munh modo naa
ye samaa
haan ye samaa kuchh aur hai

aaya re aaya chanda
ab har khwaahish poori hogi
chaandni raat mein har sajni
apne sajna ko dekhegi

aaya re aaya chanda
ab har khwaahish puri hogi
chaandani raat mein har sajni
apne sajna ko dekhegi
aaya re aaya chanda
ab har khwaahish poori hogi
chaandani raat mein har sajni
apne sajna ko dekhegi
