Recently, I came to know of a film called AAYI PHIR SE BAHAAR (1960) for the first time when I heard a song from this film on a clip of songs from Radio Ceylon programme uploaded on YT. After a few google searches, I came to know the reason why this was an obscure film. It was a dubbed Hindi film of a Tamil film ‘Raja Rani’ (1956) with Hindi songs replacing Tamil songs. The Hindi version had Vedpal Verma as the music director. Since all the songs in Hindi were composed on the original tunes of Tamil songs, one can say that Vedpal Verma was more of a music arranger for the Hindi version songs than the music director.

The film was produced under the banner of National Productions and was directed by A Bhimsingh. The star cast included Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini in the lead roles supported by S S Rajendran, A K Duraisamy, Rajasulochana, N S Krishnan, T A Madhuram etc. An interesting feature of this film was that the story, dialogues and lyrics for three songs in Tamil version were written by M Karunanidhi.

I have just finished viewing the Tamil version of the film without much understanding. But I still enjoyed the viewing mainly because of Sivaji Ganesan’s rapid fire dialogue delivery and Padmini’s acting. All the songs were pleasing to my ears even though I did not understand a word of them. As they say, the music has no language barrier. It is stated that the Tamil version of the film was a box office hit. But the Hindi dubbed version seems to have ended up as a damp squib on the box office.

The synopsis of the film which was available on THE HINDU, April 11, 2015 without disclosing the ending part, together with my addition of ending part of the story is as under:

Rani (Padmini) is the only daughter of an impoverished, visually challenged man (Duraiswami). Her hunt for a job ends when she is engaged as a box office window ticket vendor at a drama company by its owner Babu (Rajendran). Unfortunately, during a play, some gangsters rob Rani of the day’s collection, drug her and escape with the booty. The evil-minded Babu who turns up later tries to take advantage of Rani’s condition. However, she escapes from him and jumps into Raja’s (Sivaji Ganesan) car, falling unconscious in the rear seat.

Raja is the owner of an electrical goods company with a passion for theatre and is the lead player in Babu’s drama troupe. Unaware of the turn of events, Raja reaches home. He is surprised to find a girl in his car. Then he comes across a news that a rich man’s daughter named Leela has run away from home. He thinks the girl in the car is Leela! Rani starts pretending to be Leela and joins the drama troupe as actress. The two fall in love. Raja then launches his own drama company and stages the play ‘Socrates’, playing himself in the lead role. Babu tries to wreck the love of Raja and Rani and adds real poison to the drink to be given to Raja in the famous scene that has Socrates drinking poison.

In the greenroom, a lady, who has seen Babu mixing real poison in the mug which Socrates is supposed to drink as poison informs one of the influential patrons in the audience who rushes to the stage and snatches the mug with poison from Raja donning the role of Socrates and tells Babu to drink it to prove that it is not poison. The play ends with bizarre scene of Babu pushed out of the stage and all actors leave the stage. After some dramatic turn of the events in Padmini’s house, Padmini’s father agrees for the marriage of his daughter Rani with Raja. The film ends with a duet song which is picturised on Padmini and Sivaji Ganesan.

I am presenting the same duet song ‘khile phool raah mein paighaam laaye’ rendered by Manna Dey and Usha Mangeshkar. The lyrics as well as music are composed by Vedpal Verma. Since the song was not available on YT, I have made the audio clip from mp3 clip culled out from one of the programmes of Radio Ceylon and uploaded the same on YT.

I have also given the link of the video clip of original Tamil version of the song ‘thirai pottu naame’ sung by Jikki and A M Rajah under the music direction of T R Pappa.

With this, ‘Aayi Phir Se Bahaar’ (1960) makes a debut on the Blog.

Lyrics

Khile phool raah mein paighaam laaye
kis waaste
ye aji aap hi bol do o
khile phool raah mein paighaam laaye
kis waaste
ye aji aap hi bol do o
aji kya kahen ham
mukh(?) saare bolen
jab mujhko aap ne
pukaara hai pyaar se ae
aji kya kahen ham
mukh(?) saare bolen
jab mujhko aap ne
pukaara hai pyaar se ae

chhaane lage tum
nas nas mein ho o o
kaahe mujh pe zaalim ilzaam dewe
chhaane lage tum
nas nas mein ho o o
kaahe mujh pe zaalim ilzaam dewe
sun lo hamaari bhi
kahin bhool jaao
sun lo hamaari bhi
kahin bhool jaao
kyun taar dil ke
chhede more raam ho o
aji kya kahen ham
kuchh(?) saare bole
abhi mujhko aap ne
pukaara hai pyaar se

armaan naache betaab ho o o
karo pyaar dil se
harjaayi baalam ho

armaan naache betaab ho o o
karo pyaar dil se
harjaayi baalam ho

kasam khaa ke phir tum
dhokha na dena
o o o
kasam khaa ke phir tum
dhokha na dena
hoke kareeb ham
aa muskuraa len
khile phool raah mein
paighaam laaye
kiss waaste ye aji aap hi bol do
