Hullo to all Atulwaasis’
Today(8 february 2017) is the first death anniversary of Nida Fazli. I realised it when radio Ceylon played songs penned by him this morning. I must admit here that I didn’t know that he had passed away last year of a massive heart attack. Another thing I should admit was that I never knew that he was that old a poet.
Possibly the first Nida Fazli songs that I enjoyed were from the 1981 Randhir Kapoor-Sanjeev Kumar- Poonam- Yogita Bali starrer “Biwi O Biwi”. So, on-going through information available, on some of the sites which I refer to, I found that there are so many of his songs that are very popular. We can’t forget “Kabhi Kisiko Muqammal Jahaan Nahin milta”- Ahista Ahista; “Hoshwaalon Ko Khabar Kya”- Sarfarosh; “Tu iss Tarah Se Meri Zindagi Mein Shaamil hain”- Aap Toh Aise Na The; “Tera Hijr Mera Naseeb Hai”- Razia Sultan; or “Ajnabi Kaun Ho Tum”- Sweekar Kiya Maine. Infact if I put up a list of his songs we will all collectively say “Arrey! All these are penned by Nida Fazli!!?”
This poet, lyricist, and dialogue writer who was awarded the Padmashri in 2013 for his contribution to literature was a Kashmiri born in Delhi and grew up in Gwalior. His early days were with the magazines- Dharmayug and Blitz. He was invited to Mushairas and became known among readers and ghazal singers for his elegant presentation and exclusive use of colloquial language for ghazals, dohaas and nazms, while avoiding ornate Persian imagery and compound words to simplify his poetry He wrote the famous couplet: ‘Duniya jise kehte hain jaadu kaa Khilona hai Mil jaaye to mitti hai kho jaaye to sona hai’. I should say that these lines remind me of his song from Ahista Ahista- “Kabhi Kisiko Muqammal Jahaan Nahin milta. And I simply love the thought in both the couplets.
He was honoured with the National Harmony Award for writing on communal harmony. He wrote 24 books in Urdu, Hindi and Gujarati — some of which are assigned as school textbooks in Maharashtra. He received the Mir Taqi Mir award for his autobiographical novel Deewaron Ke Bich from the Government of Madhya Pradesh.
Other than the song from Ahista Ahista (which I simply cannot overlook and which I keep referring to here in this post) there is another song (of the many that I like) which I keep humming around the place which I remembered as a work by Nida Fazli is what I present here. It is from the 2002 Pooja Bhat/Pritish Nandy produced and Tanuja Chandra directed “Sur”. It had music by M.M. Kreem -as the Hindi industry calls him. He was born M.M. Keeravani in Andhra Pradesh and has worked in Tamil Telugu and Hindi films.
The movie had no big stars to talk of as Gauri Karnik, Achint Kaur, Divya Dutta, Simone Singh, Ehsaan Khan etc became recognisable names post this and their stints in TV serials. The lone known name in the cast was Lucky Ali who was known as a singer and Mehmood’s son before this. But the songs were a rage and here is the first of them on our blog. It is in the voice of Sunidhi Chauhan.

Lyrics
dil mein jaagi dhadkan aise
pehla pehla paani jaise
aisa chhaaya mujhpe jaadoo
ha ha hi hi hey hey ho ho
bhooli main sab aana jaana
gaana vana,
khona paana
kiski nigaahon se
badli zameen aasmaan
yeh jahaan
mujh mein naache gaaye
ghoome jhoome
dil mein jaagi dhadkan aise
pehla pehla paani jaise
aisa chhaaya mujhpe jaadoo
ha ha hi hi hey hey ho ho
bhooli main sab aana jaana
gaana vana, khona paana
kiski nigaahon se
koi sapna
chhup chhup ke saanson mein
meri chalta hai
koi apna
koi apna deepak sa raahon mein
meri jalta hai
dekhoon sapna
thhodi main soun,
thhodi main jaagoon
jaagoon na soun
lagta hai sara ulta pulta
dil mein jaagi dhadkan aise
pehla pehla paani jaise
aisa chhaaya mujhpe jaadoo
ha ha hi hi hey hey ho ho
bhooli main sab aana jaana
gaana vaana, khona paana
kiski nigaahon se
baaten dil ki
anjaane honthon se koi padhta hai
baaten dil ki
seedha sab kuchh
dekhoon toh nazron ko tedha lagta hai
seedha sab kuchh
chanda dharti par
dharti ambar mein
ambar pairon mein
lagta hai saara ulta pulta
dil mein jaagi dhadkan aise
pehla pehla paani jaise
aisa chhaaya mujhpe jaadoo
ha ha hi hi hey hey ho ho
bhooli main sab aana jaana
gaana vaana
khona paana
kiski nigaahon se
badli zameen aasmaan
yeh jahaan
mujh mein naache gaaye
ghoome jhoome
la la la la lala
la la la la lala
la la la la lala
la la la la lala
la la la la lala
la la la la lala
kiski nigaahon se
