Today (24 december 2017) is an important day for HFM lovers. It is the birth anniversary of the one and only Mohammad Rafi (24 december 1924- 31 july 1980).

Even those Indians who are not into HFM became aware to today being Rafi sahab’s birthday as soon as they opened the google browser. Today’s google has a Rafi google doodle on its home page for Indian visitors. A click on this doodle takes visitor’s to wikipedia’s page on Rafi.

We in this blog know much more about Rafi than the information contained on the wikipedia link of Rafi, of course. This is a day when we pay our tributes to Rafi by writing special articles and discussing Rafi songs that are not yet covered in the blog.

Though the blog is supposed to have seen lots and lots of Rafi related articles today, so far we have had only two articles. Our regulars made comments in our whatsapp group like “Avinash ji has scored the first run on the blog today.” followed by Raja’s “hurriedly” written article with the comment “have just sent the post. Hurriedly done. A test player, forced to bat in a T20. 🙂 ”

Raja was feeling like a test player of 1970s who is more comfortable scoring 36 in 60 overs rather than one who is required to score at a strike rate of knots sending the balls to all corners like tracer bullets. :).

If Raja felt like Gavaskar, then I felt like Dhoni, who would play the sheet anchor role even in T20 till 19 overs, who would then try to score all the runs in the final over. 🙂

when we discuss anniversaries of HFM artists, we tend to look back at the career of the artist, remembering his memorable songs. We have done it many times in the past. Seeing that many of us tend to think of cricket even while discussing HFM, I have been trying to bring a cricketing concept in the blog- viz statistics. These days I try to present a statistical analysis of artists which is my way of paying tribute to the artist. Seeing that HFM statists are not readily available, I have to do the statistical analysis myself. The results that I get are often very interesting.

Take the statistics of Rafi for instance. It is known that Rafi sang just under 5000 songs in HFM during his 35 years career from 1944 till 1980. But what about deeper into these statistics ? Doing ABC analysis on them for instance.

I did just that and I came up with some interesting results.

Rafi worked with 14 major composers who composed more than 100 songs each with him. These 14 major composers composed 2763 songs with Rafi which works out to about 56 % of all Rafi songs.

These music directors are:

Music Directors wise songs
Music Director No of songs in the career with Rafi
Laxmikant Pyarelal 409
Shankar Jaikishan 388
Chitragupta 280
Ravi 271
O P Nayyar 217
Kalyanji Anandji 191
Madan Mohan 165
Naushad 159
R D Burman 129
N Datta 120
Usha Khanna 117
Sonik Omi 110
S D Burman 106
S N Tripathi 101
Total 2763

Then there are 45 music directors who composed in double figures (viz between 10 to 99) with Rafi. Together they composed 1530 songs with Rafi.

So these 59 composers composed 4293 Rafi songs viz 86 % of all Rafi HFM songs.

Then there is this figure of 173 music directors who composed between one to nine songs each with Rafi. Their total output adds up to 517 songs which may look small, but it is a figure bigger than the HFM career aggregates of some well known and even legendary playback singers.

Laxmikant Pyarelal, who worked the most with Rafi composed 8 % of all Rafi songs in HFM. Laxmikant Pyarelal worked with Rafi is a whopping 174 movies. I find it interesting that Anand Bakshi penned as many as 267 out of these 409 songs, whereas Majrooh Sltanpuri is a distant second with just 55 songs. Rafi and Laxmikant Pyarelal worked with 22 lyricists, and some well known lyricists viz Gulshan Bawra, Bharat Vyas, Santosh Anand etc penned just one Rafi song each for Laxmikant Pyarelal.

“Khilona”(1970) is one of the 174 movies where Laxmikant Pyarelal employed the voice of Rafi. In fact, Laxmikant Pyarelal tended to use Rafi’s voice in every movie where they composed, unless they were specifically asked to use some other voice. Laxmikant Pyarelal could not use Rafi in “Bobby”(1973) because Raj Kapoor specifically wanted Shailendra Singh’s voice for Rishi Kapoor in this movie. But later on, Laxmikant Pyarelal used Rafi’s voice with a vengeance for Rishi Kapoor in his subsequent movies where Laxmikant Pyarelal were the music directors.

“Khilona”(1970) was directed by Chandar Vohra for Prasad Productions, Madras. the movie had Sanjeev Kumar,, Mumtaz, Jeetendra, Durga Khote, Bipin Gupta, Ramesh Deo, Chaand Usmaani, Shabnam, Malika, Jaishree, Shatrughan Singha, Jagdeep, Aruna Roy, Mridula, Jagnu Jain, Guddi, Master Satyajit etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Four of these songs have been covered in the past. Today, Rafi’s birth anniversary gives us an opportunity to discuss yet another song from the movie.

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi, Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a mujra song. Jeetendra goes to a koha and watches a mujra performance. There he imagines that the mujra is being perfomed by Mumtaz.

I am unable to identify the actress who is actually the mujra performer. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.

As can be seen, we have covered nearly half of all Rafi songs, and we still have lots and lots of great Rafi songs yet to be covered. So we will continue to be able to discuss Rafi songs for many more years to come. Of course I dream of a day when we will be able to cover all the Rafi songs that are available.

Song-Main sharaabi nahin main sharaabi nahin (Khilona)(1970) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

uthh gayi mehfil
bujh gayi shamma
dhal gayi raat gulaabi ja
uthh gayi mehfil
bujh gayi shamma
dhal gayi raat gulaabi ja
ek ghoont bhi aur na tujhko
peene doongi sharaabi ja
sharaabi ja
sharaabi ja
sharaabi ja

hmmm
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
aankhon se peene mein kuchh kharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin

aah
aah

mujhpe karle yaqeen
main nashe me nahin

aah
aa
mujhpe karle yaqeen
main nashe mein nahin

kisliye phir sanam dagmagaaye kadam
ye hai masti teri sharbati aankh ki
ye nazar hai janaab
ye nahin hai sharaab
rang kya is nazar ka gulaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin

ab piye to sanam tujhko meri kasam
aah
ab piye to sanam tujhko meri kasam
is tarah rooth kar pher li kyun nazar
aankh bojhal hui khaali botal hui
ji nahin par bhara
aur la
aur la

ek katra nahin
bas zara bhi nahin
tu sharaabi nahin
tu sharaabi nahin
tu sharaabi nahin
tu sharaabi nahin
aankhon se peene mein kuchh kharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin
main sharaabi nahin

Just wondering if we have covered songs of all those 173 composers (1-9 songs category) here already? If not, that could be a project. Every composer who has used Rafisaab should be on the blog, even if the song being posted for that composer isn’t necessarily the Rafisaab one (if it is, of course better!).
That could be our way of showing our gratitude to that composer. 🙂
