Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 1

‘अ’ – अब जीने का मौसम आया

kya kahoon
kuchh kahaa nahin jaaye. . .

Really so – our utterances and our thoughts well nigh come to a helpless pause. The more I want to substantiate these thoughts, the more difficult I find to avoid repeating myself. And yet, the voice of Rafi Sb, the limitless nuances of emotions it carries, the multitude of expressions carried in thousands of songs – that voice, that divinity descended from the heavens, continues to perpetuate afresh, with every song that is played. There seems no end to this variety.

Another year has passed without him. Over the years, many imitators have come, but none have lasted. Month in and month out, there are stage shows arranged by music lovers, in many cities and abroad too. Aspiring singers continue to sing his songs, trying to find that matching groove, that may bring their voice closer to the original sound. But alas, that is a bridge too far.

His voice is the genuine sound of the soul itself. No manner of training, no amount of practice, will bring that quality into the emotions of singing. It can only be a gift – it IS a gift, only a gift. A gift that stays and sustains only with a soul that has the humility to acknowledge it as such. And a thought comes to mind; what would be antecedents of this soul, that God chose him to bestow this divine gift. The incomparable goodness of being, the profound purity of the mind, the connected-ness with what may be termed as divinity. . . we may think up so many such epithets and yet will not be able to define and measure the totality of the personality that is Rafi Sb. In all His creation over all the aeons, He chose him to be this voice. And thence ends, our ability to delineate any more.

– – – – –

Coming to the song for today. A while back, I had posted a series of Rafi Sb songs from ‘अ’ to ‘ह’. In the closing episode of that series, I had reiterated that there still are such very lovely songs of Rafi Sb that are awaiting their entry here. And that, as I had conducted my search for solo songs for that series, I had come across a sizeable body of duet songs of Rafi Sb, that could well make up another series. And Raja ji had immediately taken me up on this remark, and wrote that he would be eagerly awaiting its publication.

Been a while now to the previous series. (Interested readers can find the summary list of songs in that series, in its last song at “Hum To Pehli Hi Nazar Mein De Chuke Hain Dil Tumhen“). It got initiated on Rafi Sb’s birth anniversary in 2015 and was completed in April 2017 – 37 songs in all. Today, it is another similar anniversary, and maybe a good time to initiate the proposed (and requested) series.

So here we are, with the first song of the this new series of Rafi Sb duets –from ‘अ’ to ‘ह’. I have done some more filtering and selection, and I hope to bring to you some of the very best of the as yet un-posted and maybe even unheard duets of Rafi Sb.

Today’s superb song is from the 1966 film ‘Dillagi’. The words are from the pen of Majrooh Sb, and the music is from the then very new duo of composers – Laxmikant Pyaarelal. The singing voice accompanying Rafi Sb is Asha Bhosle. The song is kind of a regular ‘in-the-park-and-around-the-tree’ genre. The young lovers are expressing their feelings to each other – that the time for living has now come, that they have met.

The intonations are lovely, the pace is unhurried, the words by Majrooh Sb are just so beautiful. This is a song that I remember having heard on the radio. But searching for this online, when I found its video, I simply fell more in love with this song. Maybe the HD quality of the clip has something to do with it. But more than that, it is also the on screen performances rendered by Mala Sinha and Sanjay.

A wonderful love song – to fall in love with. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Ab Jeene Ka Mausam Aaya (Dillagi) (1966) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD – Laxmikant Pyaarelal
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

ab jeene ka mausam aaya ke hum
nikle the do kadam
itne mein ae sanam
tumko miley
ab jeene ka mausam aaya ke hum
nikle the do kadam
itne mein ae sanam
tumko miley
ab jeene ka mausam aaya

rukh pe mere jo thi
gard e gham dhul gayi
rukh pe mere jo thi
gard e gham dhul gayi
haaye
zulfen jaana teri
har shikan khul gayi
nahin ye tan mera
tumhaari baahon mein
bahaaren balkhaati
chalin hain raahon mein
nahin ye tan mera

tumhaari baahon mein
bahaaren balkhaati
chalin hain raahon mein
raahon mein
ab jeene ka mausam aaya ke hum
nikle the do kadam
itne mein ae sanam
tumko miley
ab jeene ka mausam aaya

tum sadaa saath ho
yun mere pyaar ke
tum sadaa saath ho
yun mere pyaar ke
jaise rehta hai dil
mere rukhsaar pe
nasheeli aankhon ki
sadaa se peete hain
tumhin pe martey the
tumhin pe jeete hain
nasheeli aankhon ki
sadaa se peete hain
tumhin pe martey the
tumhin pe jeete hain
jeete hain
ab jeene ka mausam aaya ke hum
nikle the do kadam
itne mein ae sanam
tumko miley
ab jeene ka mausam aaya

teesra kyon rahe
hum pe saaya kiye
teesra kyon rahe
hum pe saaya kiye
haaye
keh do suraj se doobey
ab khuda ke liye
abhi to din aaya
khuda khuda kar ke
abhi kahaan dekha
kisi ko jee bhar ke
abhi to din aaya
khuda khuda kar ke
abhi kahaan dekha
kisi ko jee bhar ke
jee bhar ke
ab jeene ka
ab jeene ka mausam aaya ke hum
nikle the do kadam
itne mein ae sanam
tumko miley
ab jeene ka mausam aaya ke hum
nikle the do kadam
itne mein ae sanam
tumko miley
ab jeene ka mausam aaya

hmmm hmmm hmmm
hmmm hmmm hmmm
aa haa haa o ho ho
aa haa haa o ho ho

Hindi script lyrics (Provided by Sudhir)
———————————————————-

Sir ji, Congratulations and Best Wishes to you on this new series that you have started today !!
Today’s song – there is something, which I don’t know why, that I always like to watch and listen such songs from those black & white movies.
As rightly said by you the composition, singing, and onscreen performance of both Mala Sinha and Sanjay Khan makes us to fall in love with this beautiful song.
Thanks for bringing us this song here today.
This duet is a new addition to the long list of Rafi-Asha duets that we like to listen again and again …
And above all I liked your connecting the ‘Gift of God’ – Rafi Saab’s Voice- the Purity of the Soul- the humility – the greatness – the simplicity – the personality – Rafi Saab !!
Thank you for this post Sir !!!

Thanks Avinash ji,

Appreciate your encouraging words. 🙂
