Hullo Atuldom

April 7th, 2020. Day 14 of the holidays that whole of India is experiencing. I don’t know about others but I am having my husband’s company, reading every single WhatsApp message and their accompanying videos and seeing many movies- some of which for the “nth” time; language no-bar.

Seeing repeats of movies has its advantage. We see things that make up the background, notice the expressions of chorus dancers, look at the supports that the actors have when they do activities that they aren’t comfortable with. For example, I was seeing Amitabh starrer “Yaarana” a few days back. There is a scene where Amitabh and Amjad Khan are shown to be indulging in Hang-gliding. Now I have been seeing this movie since 1979 and have lost count of the number of times I have seen it. This time I saw that in the hang-gliding scene there is some kind of metal support that is inserted into the outfits of the actors. Now I would like to know that is that kind of safety measure available for all aficionados of hang-gliding or that was something special for the shoot.

Another habit I have acquired of late is seeing movies in all the languages it is made in -Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam or Telugu. And there is no paucity of such movies. I had seen a 1979 Tamil movie “Nallathoru Kudumbam” (roughly translating to “Wonderful Family”) with Shivaji Ganesan and Vanisri in the lead. They played a couple whose married life is rocked by the wife suspecting her husband’s loyalty due to his colourful past. It was a remake of the 1977 Telugu film “Aalu Magalu” (Wife and Husband) which had Vanisri with Nageshwara Rao. When I saw the Tamil movie on Satellite TV a few years back I had mentally thought that the songs from its Hindi version should be here on the blog.

Here is the opportunity for “Judaai” (1980) to make its entrance into the blog. Jeetendra is turning a year older- 78 to be exact. He has had a long innings in the movies starting with playing the heroine Sandhya’s body double in Shantaram’s ‘Sehra’ in 1963.

To my knowledge he was last seen in Farha Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ in 2007. He has had Mumtaz, Rajashree, Leena Chandavarkar, Hema Malini, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rekha, Reena Roy as his heroines in the late 60s and 70s. 80s saw him successfully pairing up with Sridevi and Jaya Prada. Along the way he has occasionally paired with Sharmila Tagore, Mala SInha, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, and Bindiya Goswami too.

Jeetendra and Rekha acted in 31 films and were romantically paired in 26 of which 15 were hits beginning with ‘EK Bechara” in 1972. “Judaai” was also a Rekha- Jeetendra movie. Sachin and Arun Govil played their sons with Shoma Anand and Tamanna playing the daughters-in-law.

Today’s is a party song where we have a middle-aged Dr. Shashikant (Jeetu) out-dancing Lily (Aruna Irani) after she has defeated the youngsters Sachin and Arun Govil. This was a guest appearance of Aruna Irani who was seen with Jeetu in ‘Farz’ and ‘Caravan’. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar with Anand Bakshi as the writer and Laxmikant Pyarelal as the music directors. This song was inspired from either The Beatles, Boney M or ABBA

Wah ! Listened to it after a long time, almost 40 years. This was a popular song and played on radio a lot. I could even guess what the next line is going to be. Saw the song for the first time, as I have not seen the movie.
I think “Apne Paraye” and this one were running concurrently in theatres.

Nalini Ji,
Just as you wondered, this song was inspired by ABBA song ‘Voulez vous’
