2 December 2023 was the 9th Remembrance Day of Deven Verma (23/10/1937 – 02/12/2014) who had taken comical performances in Hindi films on a different level. Gulzar had said about Deven Verma that he was not a comedian but an actor. I think, he must have made this statement with his experience of working with him in ‘Angoor’ (1982). His performance was devoid of buffoonery but was loaded with gentle humour, wit, and pun. His wife, Roopa Ganguly had said that her husband was a witty person in his real life.

I first came to know about Deven Verma in the film ‘Devar’ (1966) which I had watched in a theatre upon its release. His role in the film had a shade of a villain because he had married Sharmila Tagore in deceit who was a sweat heart of his cousin, Dharmendra. In the same year, I had also watched ‘Anupama’ (1966) in which Dharmendra, Deven Verma and Sharmila Tagore again acted together. But in this film, Deven Verma has a positive role. He does not go ahead with his planned marriage with Sharmila Tagore. It is his friend, Dharmendra who marries her. In the 1970s and 1980s, Deven Verma had majorly transformed himself in the humourous roles.

Deven Verma (Real name: Devendu Verma) was born in Kutchh to a Rajasthani father and Gujarati mother. He had two elder sisters and two younger sisters. His father, Baldev Singh Verma had a business in silver. Later, he also became a film distributor in partnership with his friend. The family shifted to Pune because his elder sister got admission for MBBS in Pune. Deven Verma, after completion of his school in Panchgani, joined Wadia College in Pune from where he completed B.A. in Political Science and Sociology in 1957.

During his college days in Pune, Deven Verma participated in plays and youth festivals. He was also a part of the Pune delegation representing the city at Youth Festivals in Delhi. His father wanted him to become a lawyer whereas he was more interested in becoming an actor. In keeping with the wishes of his father, Deven Verma, after graduation, joined Government Law College in Mumbai. During this period, he got involved in stage shows with Johny Whiskey, doing mimicry of film artists. The stage shows made him to leave his law study halfway. It was his one-act play at a function of the North India Punjabi Association when producer-director, B R Chopra who was in the audience, picked him for the film, ‘Dharmaputra’ (1961) at a monthly salary of Rs.600/-. The film failed at the box office.

Deven Verma continued with his stage shows in India and abroad. On return from stage shows abroad, A V Meiyappan of AVM Studios hired him on a contract for Rs.1500/- per month, for three years. He had to shift to Madras (Chennai) where he underwent training in acting. In the meanwhile, B R Chopra’s ‘Gumraah’ (1963) got released in which he had a role of a servant of Ashok Kumar. The film was a box office success. A V Meiyappan asked him to choose between Chennai and Mumbai and he decided to shift to Mumbai after a year.

On returning to Mumbai, Deven Verma did ‘Qawwali Ki Raat’ (1964). Next, he did ‘Devar’ (1966), ‘Anupama’ (1966) and a Bhojpuri film, ‘Nahihar Chhutal Jaaye’ (1964) in which he was in the lead role with Kumkum. But none of the films resulted in pushing his acting career. Unable to make much headway in his acting career, Deven Verma turned producer with ‘Yakeen’ (1969), directed by Brij Sadanah. The film was a box office success. Next, he produced and directed ‘Naadan’ (1971) and ‘Bada Kabootar’ (1973).

Deven Verma’s acting career took off with ‘Chori Mera Kaam’ (1975) for which he got his first Filmfare Award for the Best Comedian. With this, he was flooded with many acting assignments. During 1976-78, his 28 films and during 1979-82, his 30 films were released. His notable performances in humourous roles were in the films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee ( ‘Golmaal’ 1979, ‘Rang Birangee’, 1983), Gulzar (‘Angoor’, 1982) and Basu Chatterjee (‘Khatta Meetha’, 1978, ‘Priyatama’ 1978, ‘Dillagi’ 1978). In ‘Angoor’ (1982), he gave a memorable performance in which he and Sanjeev Kumar played double roles. Deven Verma won the Filmfare Award for the Best Comedian in this film.

Deven Verma worked with Ashok Kumar in maximum number of his films. He was also a regular visitor to his home during which he and Roopa Ganguly, Ashok Kumar’s younger daughter, fell in love. They wanted to get married. But Ashok Kumar delayed giving his consent for the marriage by telling him that she was too young, and he would decide later. Finally, it was Kishore Kumar who intervened to get them married.

During his 4 decades in Hindi films, Deven Verma acted in about 150 films and produced/directed 7 films. His last released film was ‘Calcutta Mail’ (2003). He had also worked in some TV serials in the 1990s.

Deven Verma announced his retirement from the films after the death of his father-in-law, Ashok Kumar in December 2001. After the completion of his remaining acting assignments, he permanently shifted to Kalyani Nagar, Pune where he had bought a bungalow in 1993 with the intention of settling there.

Deven Verma passed away on December 2, 2014, in his house in Pune due to heart attack and kidney failure.

‘Chhuppa Chhuppi’ (1981) was probably the only Hindi film in which Deven Verma got the lead role with Aruna Irani. The film was produced by Ram Films and was directed by Arun Jaitly, the only Hindi film he directed. The other cast of the film included Madan Puri, Shammi, Paintal, Indra Kumar, Satyen Kapoo, Aparna Chaudhary, Helen, Sunder, Seema Deo, Keshto Mukherjee, Tun Tun, Master Bhagwan etc. The film belongs to ‘detective comedy’ genre.

The gist of the film’s story is as under:

Rani (Aruna Irani) is the daughter of a wealthy parents (Madan Puri and Shammi) and stays in Delhi. Due to pressure of marriage from her parents, Rani runs away from her parents and lands in Mumbai. She stays in a hotel. She gets a job as a Secretary to private detective, William Bose (Deven Verma) who was brought up in an orphanage for which he monetarily helps.

Rani’s parents search almost all the places in Delhi where Rani is likely to visit but still there is no trace of her. They do not wish to lodge a missing person’s complaint with the police as this may spoil the marriage plan. They presume that Rani may have gone to Mumbai as she often used to say to her parents for a visit. Rani’s father engages a private Detective, Bose, for investigating Rani’s whereabouts at a fee of Rs.50000/- which Bose needs to give it to the orphanage for surgery on one of the orphan boys. With this, Rani is in the verge of getting exposed.

Rani plays a trick. She intercepts the photo of her sent by her father to Bose and replaces with some other photo from a studio which happens to be that of Rossie (Aparna Chaudhary) who is the sweat heart of a smuggler (Satyen Kapoo). Bose is after Rossie believing her to be Rani to capture her and get Rs.50000/-. Smuggler believes that Bose is trying to expose his smuggling business through Rossie. What follows is the situational comedy in which smuggler trashes Bose while trying to capture Rossie. In his second attempt, Bose is able to capture Rossie and brings her to the police station to be handed over to Rani’s parents.

Rani’s parents reaches police station. However, their happiness is short-lived as the girl in the police custody is not Rani who is actually watching all these events from a safe distance. Rani realises that getting Rs.50000/- from her parents is important to Bose as he is required to pay that sum to the hospital for the surgery of an orphan boy. She promises Bose that by the next day, she would find Rani and hand her over to the parents to get him the money.

The next day, Rani makes a visit to her parents in their hotel room and surrenders herself by telling them that Bose has sent her. Parents are happy and Bose is called at the hotel room to get his fess. But he refuses to accept the money by telling them that he has not done anything, but it is Rani who has come in her own volition. But Rani forces Bose to accept the money and return it when he gets reward of the like amount from the police in helping them to nab the smuggler. At the end, Rani’s parents have not only got back their daughter but also Bose as a bridegroom for her.

The film had 7 songs written by Lokendra (6) and Arun Jaitley (1) which were set to music by Bhuban-Hari (Pandit Bhubaneshwar Mishra-Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia). The duo have composed music for many Odiya films.

Pandit Bhubaneshwar Mishra was the doyen of Odiya traditional music. Trained in both Hindustani and Carnatic classical music, he was throughout associated with Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra and Sanjukta Panigrahi, in composing music for their Odissi dances. Just as music director, Sudhir Phadke is well known in composing music for G D Madgulkar’s ‘Geet Ramayan’ in Marathi, Pandit Bhubaneshwar Mishra has done pioneering work in composing music for the Jayadeva’s ‘Geeta Govinda’ in Odiya.

I am presenting the first song from the film, ‘Chhuppa Chhuppi’ (1981), ‘dheere dheere lo kahaan aa gaye hain ye kadam’ to appear on the Blog. The song is written by Lokendra and is rendered by Anuradha Paudwal. The song is picturised on Aruna Irani and Deven Verma as a background song when they realise for the first time that they are in love with each other.

Note: The biography of Deven Verma is mainly based on his interview which was published in http://www.rediff.com on July 23, 2013.

In Hindi film industry, there are some well-known cinematographers who have turned directors. Some of them had a successful stint as director while some had to revert to cinematography. A few of the names who graduated from cinematographer to director were Nitin Bose, Bimal Roy, Fali Mistry, Ravi Nagaich, Govind Nihalani, Santosh Sivan etc. Some of them worked simultaneously as a cinematographer and a director in some films.

I guess, it must be a challenging for a cinematographer to be a director and a cinematographer at the same time in a film. While a cinematographer is mainly concern with light, the composition of shots, the camera movements etc, a director is mainly concerned with the performances of the actors facing the camera as detailed in the screenplay written in consultation with him. The scenes conceived by the director have wider perspective through his eyes while the cinematographer sees them performing through his camera lenses. Sometime the coverage area of performances as watched by the director may not fit in the camera frames. Hence it becomes necessaity for a director-cinematographer to have an experienced chief assistant director to assist him.

I find from the online sources that Ravi Nagaich, the Cinematographer and Director has a good number of films in which he was director-cinematographer. And he had a good success ratio in such films in terms of box office results. Most of his films belonged to the genre of spy thriller/action which required some trick photography and the special effects.

I came to know about Ravi Nagaich for the first time when I watched his first Hindi film as a director, ‘Farz’ (1967) in the theatre. I was attracted to this film because it was a spy thriller in the format of James Bond films. I had already watched two James Bond films, ‘Dr. No’ (1962) and ‘From Russia With Love’ (1963). I was curious as to how the film was adapted to the Indian setting. With ‘Jigri Dost’ (1969), ‘Himmat’ (1970), ‘Keemat’ (1973 and ‘Kaala Sona’ (1975), Ravi Nagaich’s name had become synonymous with action/thriller films providing pure entertainment for the audience.

Born in Atruali (Aligarh district), Ravikant Nagaich (05/07/1931 – 06/01/1991) was regarded as a wizard of the special effects cinematography. Unfortunately, he is one of the least discussed film personalities on the internet. I did not find a detailed profile on him except a couple of short articles which did not give any background as to how he landed in the Telugu film industry in early 1960s. The earliest reference to his association with the film was in Wadia Brothers’ ‘Zimbo’ (1958) where his name appeared as an assistant to photography. So, his initial training in cinematography and special effects may be from the Wadia Brothers under their regular, Babubhai Mistry, a wizard in special effects.

Those days, Telugu film producers used to prefer mythological films, mostly with N T Rama Rao as the lead actor. Ravi Nagaich with his experience in trick photography and special effects got an early opportunity to become an independent cinematographer for Telugu film, ‘Seetha Ram Kalyanam’ (1961). After working as cinematographer in about half-a dozen Telugu films, Ravi Nagaich directed his first Hindi film, ‘Farz’ (1967) which was based on a Telugu hit film, ‘Gudachari 116’ (1966) for which he was the cinematographer. The film became a runway hit making Jeetendra in the role of a ‘deshi’ James Bond, a star and Ravi Nagaich, his successful foray in the film direction.

Ravi Nagaich’s subsequent Hindi films such as ‘Jigri Dost’ (1969), ‘Himmat’ (1970), ‘The Train’ (1970), ‘Haseenon Ka Devta’ (1971), ‘Keemat’ (1973), ‘Kaala Sona’ (1975), ‘Surakasha’ (1979), ‘Waardaat’ (1981), ‘Saahas’ (1981), ‘Raksha’ (1981) and ’Shapath’ (1984) followed his trade-mark genre of action-thriller with fast paced narratives. He had also directed a few films in the genre of romantic dramas such as ‘Pyaaar Ki Kahaani’ (1971), ‘Mere Jeevan Saathhi’ (1972) etc. While in the 1970s, most of his films became box office hit, in the 1980s, his preferred genre of films was becoming out of date resulting in a series of flop films for him. ‘Duty’ (1986) with Govinda was his last Hindi film as a director which failed at the box office. Probably Govinda in the role of a tough cop in the film was not what the audience expected to watch him. He directed his last film in Kannada, a 3D children’s film, ‘Super Boy’ (1986).

During his filmy career, Ravi Nagaich directed 25 Hindi films. His films followed the format of mainstream cinema with emphasis on pure entertainment for the audience. Ravi Nagaich had groomed Teja, his assistant in Cinematography while in Mumbai. Unfortunately, Ravi Nagaich passed away on January 6, 1991, depriving him of watching the success of his protégé, who has now become one of the top most producer-director-cinematographer in Telugu film industry.

‘Rani Aur Lalpari’ (1975) was Ravi Nagaich’s only film in the genre of children’s musical fantasy (one can also tag the film as ‘Fairy Tale’) for which he was the director and the cinematographer. The film was produced under the banner of Guru Enterprising Movies, Madras (now Chennai). Baby Rani was in the lead role with Reena Roy in the role of Lalpari. Rest of the cast was star-studded which included Rajendra Kumar, Asha Parekh, Jeetendra, Neetu Singh, Prem Nath, Feroz Khan, Agha, Ramesh Deo, Seema Deo, Aruna Irani, Mahipal, Padma Khanna, Jagdeep, Janakidas, Lalita Kumari, Narendra Nath, Preeti Ganguly, Deny Denzongpa etc. The film’s story and screenplay were written by the well-known Marathi poet, lyricist and writer, G D Madgulkar.

The story of the film is as under:

Rajendra (Rajendra Kumar) and his wife, Kamla (Asha Parekh) live with their daughter Rani (Baby Rani), her maternal uncle, Ramlal (Satyen Kappu) and the aunt (Lalita Kumari). Rajendra leaves for a long business tour leaving Kamla and Rani with her selfish uncle, Ramlal and his cruel wife. After the completion of his business trip, Rajendra is on his way back home when the family gets the news that he has died in a plane accident. Shortly thereafter, Rani’s mother, Kamla goes into coma, and she is almost clinically dead. This leaves Rani to face the cruelty of her aunt and the uncle Ramlal.

Pappu (Master Abbas) is Rani’s best friend with whom she shares her problems with him about the aunt who treats her cruely. After listening her, Pappu tells her that her story is the same that of Cinderella. He tells her the story of Cinderella in which Lalpari takes Cinderella to heaven. He suggests Rani to meet Lalpari (Reena Roy) who will take her to heaven to bring her mother to life. From here onwards, Rani is in her imaginary travel to heaven.

Lalpari takes Rani to heaven, and she pleads with Yamaraj (Prem Nath) to make her mother alive so that she can take her back to the earth. Yamaraj says that those who come here cannot go back. He says that other than this, he can give her any boon. She asks Yamaraj to give her a younger brother. He gives her that boon and asks her as to where her younger brother is. She says that he is yet to be born. By asking this boon, Rani has actually tricked Yamaraj to make her mother live. Thus, Rani succeeds in bringing back alive her mother. She also meets her father who is also alive, as he was only injured in the plane accidents.

The film had 8 songs written by Balkavi Bairagi and set to music by Vasant Desai. Two of the songs are very longish in duration. The first one is the song depicting the story of Cinderella which is of nearly 20 minutes duration. It is picturised mainly on Jeetendra, Neetu Singh and Reena Roy. The second longish song depicts the story of Gullivar (Feroz Khan) which is of nearly 8 minutes duration. In this song, there is a lot of trick photography and special effects.

I am presenting the first song from the film which is a different song than the two longish songs discussed above. The song is ‘mera phool badan kumhlaaye re’, rendered by Asha Bhosle. The song is picturised on Aruna Irani in the role of Menaka, the celestial nymph to seduce Chitragupt (Jagdeep) to get information on whereabouts of Rani’s mother and father from his records.

Hullo Atuldom

Wishing the followers of the blog A Very Happy 2023. Hope the year brings joy & contentment to one & all.

Presenting a fun song to start the year. It is from the 14/11/1986 released “Insaaf Ki Awaaz”. It was directed by B. Gopal, who was essentially a director of Telugu films who had also directed two Hindi Films, the other being “Kanoon Apna Apna” (1989).

“Insaaf Ki Awaaz” (IKA) was produced by D. Rama Naidu, who had produced close to 130 films in 13 Indian languages before he passed away in 2015. His other Hindi films were ‘Prem Nagar’ (1974), ‘Dildaar’ (1977), ‘Anari’ (1993- the Hindi debut of his younger son Venkatesh), ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain’ (1999), ‘Aaghaaz’ (2000), ‘Kuch Tum Kaho Kuch Hum Kahein’ (2002)- all of which were remakes of his successful Telugu films.

‘IKA’ starred Rekha as the avenging angel (a cop too), with Raj Babbar as her husband and Anil Kapoor as her brother. Richa Sharma, Nilu Phule, Sushma Seth, Anupam Kher, Shafi Inamdaar, Gulshan Grover, Roopesh Kumar, Tej Sapru, Jagdeep, Parikshit Sahni, etc formed the rest of the cast. Of course, ‘IAK’ was a made in South film, so it needed Kadar Khan, Asrani and Aruna Irani. Aruna Irani & Asrani formed part of the love triangle with Jagdeep being the 3rd angle. Kadar Khan was the head of the villains brigade with Anupam Kher, Gulshan Grover, Roopesh Kumar and Tej Sapru were the rest of the brigade.

Just by telling that Rekha played an avenging cop we should understand what the story of the movie was. I had not seen it at the time of the theatrical release but got to see it last week, when some channels were screening Anil Kapoor films. I have read somewhere that Anil Kapoor was mighty pleased when Rekha was roped in for the role which Smita Patil was going to play originally; he was a huge fan of Rekha.

‘IAK’ had music by Bappi Lahiri and songs written by Indeevar. Today’s song is a parody where we have Aruna Irani torn between her husband Jagdeep and paramour Asrani. They mouth a parody of songs that were famous in the 80s, all Bappi Lahiri creations. The songs have been rewritten to suit the situation and recorded in S Janaki- Kishore Kumar voices.

Wishing Govardhan Asrani- popular simply as Asrani- on turning 83. He has acted in close to 350 films, mostly as a comedian. He has also produced and directed a few films. He was first seen as Biswajeet’s friend in “Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan” (1967), and then followed ‘Satyakam’, ‘Mere Apne’, and and and numerous other movies where he had some memorable role. ‘Sholay’ gave him a new identity and he was made to enact a caricature of the ‘angrezon ke zamaane ka jailor’ in many movie that followed.

Happy Birthday to this versatile actor who was last seen in ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ (2021 which was a sequel of the 2005 hit).

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2012-2022) – Song No. 138
————————————————————————————–

This month ‘December’ was a special month for the blog ten years back i.e., in 2012.
The blog tally hit a double hundred exactly and clocked 200 posts in ‘December 2022’. This was the ‘sixth’ double hundred for the blog after July-August-September’2011, and August & Sepetember’2012 where the blog scored over two hundred posts in single month.

The overall average per day for this month was well above six songs per day. But when we look for today’s day i.e.,29th December’ ten years back in 2012 the blog saw twelve songs posted in a single day !

Regulars on the blog now-a-days or those associated with the blog in recent years would not believe this 😊 but, that is the fact.

Following is the list of songs posted on 29.12.2012 in ascending order (i.e., the last song of the day appears at the bottom of this list below)

Hullo Atuldom

Top three actors of the golden era of Hindi cinema (from mid 1940s to late 1960s) were Dilip-Dev-Raj. They were nearly of the same age though their debut years were “Jwar Bhata” (Dilip Kumar) in 1944, “Hum Ek Hain” which came in 1946 (Dev Anand) and “Valmiki” also in 1946 which had Raj Kapoor in his first adult role but it was a tiny role. The three of them carved their own path and were the dominant stars of the Golden Era. Raj Kapoor went on to become a much-acclaimed actor-director earning him the title of ‘The greatest Showman’, Dev Anand also became an actor-director and was usually associated with slick and stylish city-based films and became popular for his trendy fashion sense as well, and Dilip Kumar came to be hailed as the greatest actor and set a high bar for future generations to emulate.

However, ironically all three never got the opportunity to come together on screen and act in a single film. Maybe no director or story writer could conceive a script to bring these stars together. However, there were two films where two of the three acted as co-stars and these two films therefore are rare treasures to be appreciated and preserved for this unique aspect.

The above are the thoughts expressed by a blogger in this post.

I had similar thoughts about the troika of the 1970s Jeetendra- Amitabh Bachchan- Rajesh Khanna and have stated it in this post. On further rewinding I recalled “Anand” (1970), “Namak Haram” (1973), “Gehri Chaal” (1973) & “Dharam Kaanta” (1982). That is a list of movies which had Amitabh Bachchan & Rajesh Khanna; Jeetendra & Amitabh Bachchan; and Rajesh Khanna & Jeetendra. But there were non after these. I am sure, readers will agree that it was a loss for Hindi Movie buffs. Here I would like to mention that Amitabh Bachchan was the last to make his debut in Hindi films; the other two had their first releases in 1964 and 1966.

This was a post to celebrate Jeetendra turning 80. With today’s post we are wishing The Big B- as many of his fans address him- on turning 80. He is still very active and his last movie released on 7th October.

For the last 10-15 years he has been playing roles of older characters but mostly roles specially written keeping his abilities in mind. “Piku” one of his recent movies had him play an eccentric 70 year old father of an architect (Deepika Padukone), living in Delhi. His act of the Hypochondriac with chronic constipation, who traces every problem to his bowel movements is a standout from his recent movies. In 2020, we saw him play a stingy old ghar jamai Chunnan ‘Mirza’ Nawab in ‘Gulabo Sitabo”. That role won him a Critics Best Actor award at the 66th Filmfare Awards. This man is still getting roles which get him awards.

Since 2000 he has been the host of the Indian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” i.e. “Kaun Banega Crorepati?” (KBC for short) and people who know me know that I am addicted to that show. But then my family and friends will say that I am addicted to anything that so much as shows Amitabh Bachchan’s shadow. I will stop any job at hand if I spot “Sholay”, “Deewar”, “Amar Akbar Anthony”, “Khuddar”, “Trishul”, “Don”, “Satte Pe Satta”, “Mahaan” and “Bhootnath”, “Piku”, “Black”, “Ab Tumhaare Hawaale Watan Saathiyo” and most of the 200 movies (maybe I will give a few of his initial movies a miss) that he has acted in, over the last 53 years. And when there is such a huge library of movies and songs to choose from getting the one that highlights the person’s abilities is not easy.
The song that I have chosen shows Amitabh Bachchan with Aruna Irani who incidentally was the first heroine who played AB Sr’s romantic interest in the 1972 released “Bombay To Goa”. There is an interview of Aruna Irani that keeps popping up on YouTube where she speaks of how uncomfortable AB Sr. used to be in the dance sequences of “Bombay To Goa”. AB Sr. was always good at action, emotion, comedy etc; today’s song will show the improvement that had come in his dancing over the years.

The song is from the 1983 released “Mahaan” which was directed by S. Ramanathan. If I am not wrong he had directed “Bombay To Goa” also. “Mahaan” had AB Sr. in a triple role of father and sons who are twins. Waheeda Rehman, Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi played the heroines. Amjad Khan led the brigade of villains that included Kadar Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Sujit Kumar, Mac Mohan. Ashok Kumar, Mukri, Urmila Bhatt, Aruna Irani and Meenakshi (or was it Nandita Thakur) who formed the rest of the cast. The songs were written by Anjaan and RD Burman was the music director. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar, RD Burman and Amitabh Bachchan were the playback singers used.

Happy 80th Birthday to the Darling of the masses. Happy Birthday to the Big B. Happy Birthday to Amitabh Bachchan.

‘PANCHAM-RAFI’ Jodi’s Variety Songs – 7
———————————————————

When I started as a ‘new contributor’ to this blog I had shared a Kishore Kumar song from the movie ‘Paanch Dushman-1973’ to Atul ji.
I was in fact not aware of this song before that, and it was my boss then, who, noticing my interest in music, had asked me about the link of the song.
He in turn was asked by one of his friends who was looking for this song. Both were aware of few lines of this song and about the singer only, and nothing more – like about the movie’s name etc. I was successful in locating this song. Later I also shared it to the blog. This song was posted on the blog on October 03, 2012.

The movie ‘Paanch Dushman-1973’ itself was an ‘obscure movie’ for me. However, our inhouse encyclopaedia Shri. Arunkumar ji, in his comment on this post, had mentioned in detail about this movie which I am reproducing here below.

October 03, 2012
Atul ji,
PAANCH DUSHMAN-1973 was a film made under the banner of M.G.O. Films, Bombay. It was produced by Manu Narang but Directed by Bimal Rawal. The music of R.D. Burman had lyrics from Majrooh. There were 6 songs,3 solos and 3 duets. Solos were by KK-2 and Rafi-1,Duets of Asha/KK-2 and Lata/KK-1.The other songs are better than the above song.
The cast was Lead pair of MANU NARANG and RAJEE,both were first timers.Manu Narang was the son of S.D.Narang, the famous Producer/Director, who himself was a dashing Hero in the 40s.Films like KHAZANCHI-1941 were big hits-not because of Narang, but because of superb Debut by SHAMSHAD Begum in Hindi films. She had sung ALL 9 song-Solos-in the Debut film and created a sort of record, unbroken till today.
Manu Narang was one time the famed Playboy of the 50s and 60s and was in the news for all wrong reasons. There are umpteen stories of him and his Rang reliayan…………
No one can predict why a Hindi film succeeds. This film PAANCH DUSHMAN had the essential ingredients of a successful Masala film. It had a good looking youthful new lead pair, one of the best Music Directors, Best singers, very good story line,5 Villains (Pran, Shatrughna, Manmohan, Vinod khanna and Prem Chopda),
6 comedians (Mehmood, Mukri, Mohan choti, Agha, Sunder and Bramhachary),2 Cabaret dancers (Aruna Irani and Helen) an eternal weeping Maa-Baap (Durga Khote and Nazir Hussain), but HARD LUCK! This murder mystery did not succeed…..
This period in Hindi films was of stories of Smugglers, desh ke Dushman etc. Accordingly, the storyline went like…
Sunil (Manu Narang) is accused of murdering his own brother Raju and a Prostitute. He and his lover Reeta (Rajee) learn that the real motive of the murder was Diamonds. So, to tap the real murderer, Sunil poses as a Dimond merchant cum a Prince. The 5 villains are lured who go after the best Diamonds that he has. Finally, with the help of his friends, lover and a helping Police Inspector (Jagdish Raj), the real culprit is captured.
Despite dances, drama and mystery, fight and little weeping by Hero’s crippled parents, the public showed its back to the film and very quickly, the film went in hiding.

In later years this movie was re-released in ‘1987’ with the title as ‘Daulat Ke Dushman. Though its music was created by none other than our beloved Pancham Da, this movie remained a not-so familiar movie for me.

“Paanch Dushman’ (alias ‘Daulat Ke Dushman) was directed by Bimal Rawal. It was produced by Manu Narang. It had Manu, Rajee, Aruna Irani, Sunder, Mukri, Mohan Choti, Durga Khote, Nassir Hussain, Sujata, Yograj, Jagdish Raj, Brahmachari, Agha, Helen, and Mehmood.
Story, screenplay, and dialogues of this movie were written by Dr Balkishan Mauj.

Editing of this movie was done by H.B. Pathare.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 24.01.1973. (This movie will turn ‘fifty’ next year 😊)

Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, and Asha Bhonsle, and Manna Dey had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie had seven songs (six plus one added later) written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by R.D. Burman.

(Note: – The ‘Addenda’ of HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) mentions that ‘this movie was later released in 1987 with the title ‘Paanch Dushman’ ‘alias’ ‘Daulat Ke Dushman’, with this additional song ‘Sonaa chaandi jhoothhi daulat, sachchi daulat pyaar … sung by Manna Dey.)

(*appears as first song in the movie in the background of titles)

In 2015 I got my first copy of HFGK i.e., HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) but I had never gone through other songs of this movie since then. Also, they were not available then. Now songs of this movie are uploaded by music lovers and we can now listen to all songs of this movie.

Recently while browsing through the blog, I noticed that only one song of this movie was posted in 2012. Soon this movie will be completing its ‘ten years’ run on the blog without adding the second song. So, I checked and found today’s song which is sung by Rafi Saab. This is the only song sung by him in this movie and that fits the bill for my series of ‘Pancham-Rafi Songs’ where I have discussed songs where Rafi Saab had sung only one song in the movie where music was composed by R.D. Burman.

When I listened to today’s song for this post and listened to its’ link with dialogues, I immediately identified the voice of Mehmood. So, yes! this is a song of Rafi Saab sung for Mehmood.

Let us now enjoy today’s song in Rafi Saab’s voice singing for Mehmood. The song is picturised on Mehmood and Aruna Irani.

Here is this entertaining song …

kya kya armaan thhe dil ke
sab reh gaye dil mein
samjha main
kismat khul gayi
mujhko raam budhhiya

soch rahaa thha main

chandaa ka ik tukdaa aa
jhoom ke dekhoongaa
choom ke dekhoongaa
goraa goraa mukhdaa aa aa
soch rahaa thha main

chandaa ka ik tukdaa aa
jhoom ke dekhoongaa
choom ke dekhoongaa
goraa goraa mukhdaa aa
yahi dhun thhi
basoongaa main
jawaan gaalon ke til mein
kya kya armaan thhe dil ke
sab rah gaye dil mein
samjha main
kismat khul gayi
mujhko raam budhhiya
mil gayi

dekh singaar uska
main to yahi samjhaa
hai koyi sooratwaali
chehre ki laali ko
ponchh ke dekha to
nikli budhhiyaa kaali ee ee
dekh singaar uska
main to yahi samjhaa
hai koyi sooratwaali
chehre ki laali ko
ponchh ke dekha to
nikli budhhiyaa kaali
dukhi ban ke
padaa hoon main
mohabbat ki ee
manzil mein
kya kya armaan thhe dil ke
sab reh gaye dil mein
samjha main
kismat khul gayi
mujhko raam budhhiya

arey pahunchaa jab uski mehfil mein

Hullo Atuldom

Day 1 of Sharad Navratr. Ashwin Navratr. Various names for the same festival, various ways to celebrate. I have received pictures of ‘Ghatta-sthapana’, ‘Devi Shailputri’, and of course the South Indian ‘Bomma Kolu’ (or Golu depending on your mother tongue). There is a lot of beauty in the manner in which we decorate our Gods and enjoy the festival. There are special offerings, poojas, archanas, bhajans and BHOJANS too (going by the name ‘Bhog’). Then there is the ever so colour raas garba in Western India, Gujarat and Maharashtra in particular. (May not be organised on a grand scale this year, as we are still worried about the consequences of the Pandemic. Grandeur can wait)

Here is a Devi Maa bhajan to kick-off the festivites. It is from the 1978 release ‘Khoon Ki Pukaar’, the synposis of which is there in this post. The movie was directed by Ramesh Ahuja for Tahir Hussain’s TV Films. It had songs penned by Hasrat Jaipuri and Gauhar Kanpuri and music director was Bappi Lahiri. Today’s song is sung by Mohd. Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar and on-screen, both, Pran and Vinod Khanna lip-sync to Rafisaab’s voice and Aruna Irani sings in Lata didi’s voice. We can also see Shabana Azmi and Reeta Bhaduri seated among the devotees of the temple.

As per what I have seen a few years back, this song is used by Amjad Khan (Daku Zaalim Singh) to send a message to Daku Sher Singh (VK); who is recovering under the care of pujari Baba (ex. Dr. Bhushan played by Pran); through Bijli (Aruna Irani). That should make viewers understand what Aruna Irani and VK are exchanging in sign language (‘ishaaron ishaaron mein’ sounds better, I suppose)

With this we also remember the ever oh-so-handsome and oh-so-good looking Vinod Khanna for his birth anniversary which was yesterday. He would have been only 75.

Hullo Atuldom

Let me begin with a confession. I am very bad at buying gifts. As a youngster, dependent on pocket money, I used to make do with buying greeting cards and either posting it to my near and dear or hand-delivery (which was cheaper). Things were kind of simple. Things were simpler if I could find someone to share expenses. Oh yes, those days people used to share or go-dutch (I am sure that is not the correct expression in the scenario of buying greeting cards, but for want of a better word), at least in my circle, then I used to buy some fancier cards. There was a category of people for whom the gifting used to be a card accompanied by some memorabilia or chocolates etc. It was similar at the time of my birthdays too and I have almost all the cards I received saved up and I access them occasionally and remember those days. In fact I have even saved up the cards which my kids received in the first few years of their life. But things have changed with the turn of the millennium, decade etc.

These days people are into wishing through the social media. We see the closest relative post a message on some public forum and all friends, relatives – close ones and not so close ones- follow the leader. The person who is being wished is overwhelmed with the deluge of messages. The youngsters, who began the practice of using social media, have again changed there methodology- they call the birthday boy/girl at the stroke of midnight. That is really sweet of these people. And in this last year when it has been impossible to wish anyone on a one-to-one basis, people have discovered a way out. These days there are ‘Zoom Parties’ and that is a different feel altogether. My sisters, brothers and kids – nieces and nephews- introduced me to this form of party last year on our wedding anniversary.

Personally I still like to call the person concerned and wish. I did that two days back when my Kaaki (aunt) turned 80 and yesterday when my dear mom-in-law went a year closer to 90.

And for today I have decided to wish my dear friend of Atuldom with this post. He is a person who is my inspiration in the sense that he learnt so many skills after retirement meaning there is no age-limit to learn anything new. He has no prejudices as regards the age of music he listens to- meaning he is of the opinion there are good and bad songs/ music in all ages and times. He may not go out of his way seeking songs of new movies but appreciates good work when he sees it. He is generous in sharing his knowledge. He is among the few persons who I am comfortable in chatting with and can pick up the phone and start talking as if there is no gap in communication. The mornings of the WhatsApp group associated with the blog begin with his “GOOD MORNING” messages and we treasure the beautiful thoughts that come with it. (I am sorry if I don’t respond to each one of them but I do wait for them)

We in Atuldom like to think of him as our IN-HOUSE ENCYCLOPEDIA and I prefer addressing him as Guruji or Arunji. Yes today is our dear Arunkumar Deshmukhji’s birthday. All his posts are so well-researched that I am sure it is a big time consuming activity for him considering that he also has his responsibilities of being a doting father and proud grandfather. May God give you all the energy needed to keep the posts coming in at a steady pace and we see your 1000th post soon.

For today I have not chosen any “Happy Birthday” but the song with this post has a very young, baby-face Aruna Irani trying to get a middle-aged Madan Puri drunk. I don’t remember much of the movie so I will not be able to tell why Aruna Irani is doing so. The song is from a movie called “Ek Paheli” (1971) which was produced by Kuldip Talwar, directed by Naresh Kumar who had made a few movies with Rajendra Kumar as hero. If this was a post by our today’s birthday boy he would have given a brief about Naresh Kumar too I can only make the statement that possibly he was Rajendra Kumar’s family.

“Ek Paheli” had Feroz Khan and Tanuja leading a cast of Sanjeev Kumar, Madan Puri, Aruna Irani, Rajendranath, Tun Tun, Jeevan etc. Usha Khanna was the music director and song were written by Asad Bhopali. Suman Kalyanpur, Mohd Rafi and Usha Khanna were the playback singers.

Asad Bhopali has given songs which have been popular and can be heard on the radio and music systems regularly. Songs like ‘woh jab yaad aaye’; ‘kismat bigadi duniya badali’; ‘sau baar janam lenge’; the fun song in the late ’70s ‘ram dulaari maike gayi’. Today’s generation or those in their 30s currently will remember Asaduallah Khan (Asad Bhopali) for the songs of ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (1989) which was among the last movies that he wrote songs for. He passed away in 1990 at Bhopal. Thanking Asad Bhopali for today’s song and numerous others that he wrote for movies since his debut in 1949.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 135 # Asha Bhonsle-Kishore Kumar duets#

Today 29th April is ‘international dance day’!!!

If we go by the dictionary meaning of dance, it is ‘a series of steps and movements which you do to music’ and so the dancing is ‘the action of moving to music’.

Many of us like to dance but are too shy to break into a dance in public or even among friends (people like me). People like me will not dance if requested specifically but will dance without any insistence sometimes…. man mutaabiq ‘maahaul’ hona chaahiye bas, man aur sharir donon hi naachne lagte hain 😊

People may differ on what exactly ‘correct dance’ is. I think ‘dance’ is a state of mind. It is spontaneous when you like some music or want to express one’s joy sometimes. It may even be a process of swaying your body- sometimes to the accompaniment of humming or singing.

Classical dance or dance art form and traditional dance are ‘respected’ dance forms and are not part of this discussion today. That is a separate domain, and I am not an authority to speak on that.

Today I present this song, which according to me is a super dance number in its own way where Mehmood and Aruna Irani are performing on the song and also dancing.

I have mentioned it in my earlier posts that I like Mehmood’s dancing. Watching him dance often causes me to do a jig or two myself. 😊

Let us move to today’s movie now. The movie is ‘Man Mandir-1971’.

I associate this movie mainly with its song ‘jaadugar tere nainaa’. Other songs of this movie are also nice songs but they are lesser heard ones. Today’s song is one of them. I was not aware of this song till I checked for the remaining song from this movie ‘Man Mandir-1971’. I remember to have heard this song in the past but I had forgotten which movie it was from.

“Man Mandir-1971” was produced by Sudesh Kumar and directed by Chanakya for Vijayshree Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Waheeda Rehman, Sanjeev Kumar, Sudesh Kumar, David, Sunder, Randhir, Onkar, Jagadishraj, Aruna Irani, Manorama, Indumati, Kumudini Shanker, Helen, Ravikant, Mansaram, Mac Mohan, Paul Sharma, Parsuram, Som Haksar, Nayampally, Krishan Kumar, Farooq Jaipuri, Jagdish Sharma, Baby Kalpana, Master Chikoo, Mehmood etc in it.
The movie introduced Rakesh Roshan and Kanchan.

The movie had six songs in it. Five songs have been covered in the past.
