1956 was the eleventh year of Lata Mangeshkar as a playback singer in Hindi movies. In other words she entered the second decade of her HFM career this year. If she had sung 4 songs in 3 movies in 1946, 1956 saw her singing a whopping 204 songs in 49 movies.

Here are the details of songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in Hindi movies released in 1956 :-

One can see that Lata Mangeshkar sang in 49 movies that were released in 1956. All Lata Mangeshkar songs have been covered in 30 of these movies. So we only have 19 movies of 1956 left from which Lata Mangeshkar songs can still be covered.

Alphabetically the first such movie is “26th January”(1956). This movie was produced and directed by Ramesh Sahgal for Sahgal Productions, Bombay. The movie had Nalini Jaiwant, Ajeet, Johny Walker, Sapru, B M Vyas, Leela Mishra, Cuckkoo, Balraj Mehta Chamanpuri, Nishi (debutant) etc in it. The movie also had guest appearances by Gajanan Jaageerdaar, Jagdeesh Sethi, Randheer, Gyani and Patanjali.

The movie had seven songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the blog. The movie had five Lata solos. Both songs covered in the blog were Lata solo songs.

Here is the third Lata solo song from “26th January”(1956) to appear in the blog. This song, sung by Lata Mangeshkar is penned by Rajinder Krishan. C Ramchandra is the music director.

Incidentally, Rajinder Krishan by 1956 had penned 255 songs for Lata Mangeshkar and C Ramchandra had composed 237 Lata Mangeshkar songs. They were the top most lyricists and music director respectively as far as working with Lata Mangeshkar till that time was concerned.

Listening to this song tells me that we still have lots and lots of forgotten gems left unexplored. I listened to this song for the first time only just now.

Song-Aankh royi magar muskuraana padaa(26th January)(1956) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-C Ramchandra

Lyrics

aankh royi magar muskuraana pada
aankh royi magar muskuraana pada
dil ke tukde huye
phir bhi aana pada
aankh royi magar

aankh royi magar
aankh royi magar muskuraana pada
dil ke tukde huye
phir bhi aana pada
aankh royi magar

aa aa aa aa aa
tere dam se jawaan ye muhabbat rahe
tere dam se jawaan ye muhabbat rahe
mera kya hai magar tu salaamat rahe
tere dam se jawaan ye muhabbat rahe
mera kya hai magar tu salaamat rahe
bas yahi soch kar zahar khaana pada
bas yahi soch kar zahar khaana pada
dil ke tukde huye
phir bhi aana pada
aankh royi magar
aankh royi magar muskuraana pada
dil ke tukde huye
phir bhi aana pada
aankh royi magar

Atul ji,

A small error.
C Ramchandra in place of Rajinder Krishan. ( Incidentally….)
