Today’s song is from Raj Kapoor’s flop film Baawra-1950.

When I started collecting information on this film, I got a Zero at every attempt that I made to get its story. Disappointed, I left that point and wanted to know more about the film’s director G. Rakesh -a name I had never heard in the last many years. I was wondering that a film of Raj Kapoor and an unknown director ? कुछ तो गडबड है !

When I tried to get information from IMDB about G.Rakesh, there was no information, however a trivia mentioned 3 names as his Grandsons, with surname Kapoor (son’s sons ). That meant that the director was also a Kapoor ! Was he anyway related to Raj kapoor’s family ? I decided to go to the root of this mystery. When I tried to get information on one of his grandsons- Aditya Roy Kapoor, I was led to an article in The Economic Times dated 20-11-2010 and the whole secret of G.Rakesh was unveiled.

G.Rakesh was Raghupat Rai Kapoor, before joining the film industry. Raghupat was one of the 9 siblings in a very rich joint family, which owned one of the largest departmental stores in Lahore – Midumal Durgadas aka Roy Brothers. It had branches in Central provinces, Delhi and also in Shimla. Raghupat wanted to become a film producer and not a Departmental store Manager !. He left for Bombay with the family’s good wishes and Rs. 15 lakhs towards his share in the property. That was a time when big films were made in 1 to 2 Lakhs only. At today’s rate this amount was about 10 crores !

To be on the safe side in case he failed, Raghupat Roy changed his name to G.Rakesh. He produced his first film Shahenshah Akbar in 1943 with leading big stars like Kumar and Vanmala. He had established Kamal Rai Pictures in the name of his mother. He not only produced the film but also co-directed it with G.R.Sethi as R.Rai. His family- wife and children had joined him by then,in Bombay. His next film was Zanjeer-1947. His eldest son Kumud Rai joined the Indian Army and left home.

Raghupati Roy directed the film Lekh-1949 as G.Rakesh. In this film he gave a chance to Krishen Dayal B.Sc. as a Music Director. His last film as a producer and director was Baawra-1950. Due to the film’s poor performance he gave up producing films and started doing jobs in studios like Famous studio and mehboob studio. Raghupat Rai also wrote 7 song lyrics in films like Lekh-4 songs and Baawra-3 songs. He produced 4 films and directed 3 of them.

Meanwhile his Army son, at his Kashmir posting, fell in love and married a Jew girl-Salome. She had played roles in Hindi films like Tu hi meri zindagi-1965 opposite Deb mukherjee. She was also Miss India in 1972. After marriage she became a Choreographer and did many films including Bobby-1973 her parents were dancers. Her father had taught Master Bhagwan how to dance in the film Albela-1951. The couple had 3 sons – Aditya Roy kapoor, Siddharth Roy and Kunal Roy Kapoor. All of them are well set in Bollywood. This is how one can get information with hard work, even from hidden stories.

The cast of the film Baawra included Raj kapoor, Nimmi, Lalita pawar, K.N.Singh, Sundar, Heeralal, Ratan Kumar etc. The film had 5 lyricists including Raghupat Rai aka G.Rakesh. The music director was Krishna Dayal. For the film’s Music Director Krishna Dayal, Zanjeer-1947 was his First film as a Composer. He went on to give music to only 4 more films, namely Lekh-49,Bawra-50, Malika Saloini-53 ( a song ” wo aaye hai, dil ko karar aa gaya” by Sulochana kadam is an Evergreen song !) and Vijaygarh-54.

Another little known name in the cast was Ratan Kumar. Ratan Kumar (Real Name- Syed Nazar Ali, born on 21-8-42 at Ajmer to 12-12-2016 at California,USA ). He started working as a child star when he was just 4 year old. His first film was Baburao Patel’s Gwalan-46. He did 25 film roles before he acted in the film Jagriti-54. He worked in many famous films like Sargam-50, Malhar-51, Afsana-51, Baiju Bawra-52, Do bigha zameen-53, Boot Polish etc. In Total he acted in 41 films.
After doing film Jalwa-55, he migrated to Pakistan in 1956, with his family, and remade the movie Jagriti -1954 into Bedari(1957) (Urdu translation of Jagriti-1954 ) and used the same old tunes for film songs in Pakistan, aimed at igniting a similar emotion and patriotic zeal, among the listeners. Aao bachcho tumhe dikhayen jhaanki Hindustan ki… (come children let us show you glimpses of India), is a popular Hindi film song of the 1950s. Aao bachchon sair karayen tumko Pakistan ki… (children, let us take you on a tour of Pakistan) is an equally hit song of the same period in Pakistan. The movie Bedari (1957) was produced by his elder brother Wazir Ali Rizvi.

He played a young boy’s role in many Pakistani films later. Nagin (1959) was the first Pakistani film in which he played a lead actor opposite Neelo as the lead actress. Ratan Kumar’s success, as a lead actor, could not last long because his later films did not do well at the box-office and he eventually faded away.

In 1977, his 4 years old daughter died in an accident in Lahore, Pakistan. He was so emotionally upset after that accident that he decided to quit the Pakistani film industry. In the late 1960s, Ratan Kumar also got into the business of selling oriental carpets and had started traveling back and forth from Pakistan to Europe for this business. Eventually he ended up settling down permanently in the United States after 1979.

Ratan Kumar was living in California, in his old age, and was admitted to the hospital for pneumonia 10 days before his death on 12 Dec 2016. He had a long history of illness, though. In 1996, his lungs collapsed twice in the same year. When they collapsed the third time in 2000, he was left paralyzed and went into a coma for eight days. Then he recovered in four to five months and became somewhat normal again. His survivors include 2 sons, a daughter and seven grandchildren .

Today’s song is the 6th song from the movie to be presented here. It is sung by Geeta Roy. The lyricist is Randheer Sahityalankar.

Song- Meri duniya kee shaayad har khushi kam hotee jaatee hai (Baawra)(1950) Singer- Geeta Roy, Lyricist- Randheer Sahityalankar, MD- Krishna Dayal

Lyrics

meri duniya ki shaayad har khushi kam hoti jaati hai
meri duniya ki shaayad har khushi kam hoti jaati hai
ummeden mit’ti jaati hain
hanshi kam hoti jaati hai
ummeden mit’ti jaati hain
hanshi kam hoti jaati hai
meri duniya ki shaayad har khushi kam hoti jaati hai

wahi rangeeniyaan dilchaspiyaan ab bhi hai duniya mein
magar mere liye har dilkashi kam hoti jaati hai
ummeden mit’ti jaati hain
hanshi kam hoti jaati hai
meri duniya ki shaayad har khushi kam hoti jaati hai

nazar aai thhi manzil deep dhundhle ho ujaale mein
kiran wo raushni ki aaj madhyam hoti jaati hain
ummeden mit’ti jaati hain
hanshi kam hoti jaati hai
meri duniya ki shaayad har khushi kam hoti jaati hai

hansi pheeki pheeki si hai
?? bhi hai pareeshaan sa
ki ab to zindagi se zindagi kam hoti jaati hai
ummeden mit’ti jaati hain
hanshi kam hoti jaati hai
meri duniya ki shaayad har khushi kam hoti jaati hai

So this post gives us information on the lineage of Vidya Balan’s SRK (Siddharth Roy Kapoor). For some reason I thought Vidya Balan’s sasural was connected to the other “Kapoor family” that you had once written about.
I recall that you have written a post on the ‘other’ Shashi Kapoor who acted in a few films, much before Raj kapoor’s brother Shashi Kapoor made a mark in films

Peevesie’s Mom ji,
Thanks for your comments.
It is natural to get confused with so many Kapoor families in the Hindi film industry. I am glad that your mind is now clear about Vidya’s sasural !
Thanks.
