I had never heard of the film ‘Baawraa’ (1950) until last week. While browsing on the internet, I came across an audio clip of a song from this film. The song was ‘saahil jo dubo de kashti ko saahil ki tamanna kaun karen’. I liked the lyrics and the music composition with Rafi’s voice giving it a finishing touch as per the mood of the song. The song in theghazal format was written by Amarnath Khanna and set to music by Krishan Dayal. The film was produced under the banner of Shri Durga Pictures and directed by G Rakesh.
Apart from the film, the names of the director and the lyricist were also new to me. I was at least aware of Krishan Dayal because of his music direction in ‘Lekh’ (1949) and ‘Mallika Salomi’ (1953). The film however had some well known actors – Raj Kapoor, Nimmi, Lalita Pawar, Hiralal, K N Singh, Sundar and Rattan Kumar. 10 songs for the film were written by five lyricists – Gafil Harnalvi (4), Raghupat Rai (3), Randhir Sahityalankar (1), Rajinder Krishan (1) and Amarnath Khanna (1). Video clip of the film is not available. I guess that the film may have flopped at the box office.
Amarnath Khanna appears to be a ‘one song lyricist’ unless he wrote lyrics for other films in some other pseudo name. As for G Rakesh, the film’s director, I got some interesting information from a Wikipedia article on Aditya Roy Kapur. I quote the relevant portion of Wikipedia article :
His (Aditya Roy Kapur’s) grandfather Raghupat Roy Kapur left his home and the family business of departmental store chain, Midumal Durgadas, aka Roy Bros in Lahore in the 1940s and shifted to Bombay (Mumbai) to get associated with the film industry. He eventually acquired the pseudonym G Rakesh and produced his first film, Shahenshah Akbar in 1943, with K N Singh as the lead. Soon his wife and children joined him and he went on to produce films like Zanjeer (1947) and even directed films Lekh (1949) with Motilal and Suraiya and Banwra (1950) with Raj Kapoor and Nimmi.
So Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO of UTV Motion Pictures, Kunal Roy Kapur and Aditya Roy Kapur, film actors are the grandsons of G Rakesh aka Raghupat Roy Kapur.
Only the audio clip of the song is available. I guess that the song was picturised on Raj Kapoor.
With this song, ‘Baawraa’ (1950) makes it to this blog for the first time.
Song-Saahil jo dubo de kashti ko (Baawra)(1950) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Amarnath Khanna, MD-Krishan Dayal
Lyrics
saahil jo dubo de kashti ko
saahil jo dubo de kashti ko
saahil ki tamanna kaun kare
saahil jo dubo de kashti ko
aaraam na ho jis manzil par
manzil ki tamanna kaun karen
saahil jo dubo de kashti ko
jab dukh hi dukh ho duniyaa mein
roton pe hans de mehfil mein
duniyaa se mohabbat kisko ho
mehfil ki tamanna kaun karen
saahil jo dubo de kashti ko
jab jaal bichhaa ho gulshan mein
aur kaante uljhen daaman mein
us baagh ki khwaahish kaun kare
us gul ki tamanna kaun kare
saahil jo dubo de kashti ko
ummeed miti dil toot gaya
wo shamaa bujhi wo dil na raha
toote huye dil se hansti huyi
mehfil ki tamanna kaun kare
saahil jo dubo de kashti ko
saahil ki tamanna kaun kare
saahil jo dubo de kashti ko

Kamathji,
Yep, you are right. You can call him one movie wonder again; although he wrote another song in the same movie : aa ja zara mukhda dikha ja
