The Voice of Mukesh #73
– – – – – – – – – – – – –
The search for songs of Mukesh continues as we close in on his last set of remaining songs that are yet unpublished on the blog. With the current count (prior to this post) at 818, there still is a good number of songs to be tracked and brought on board. The revised and updated Mukesh Geet Kosh (compiled by Shri Harish Raguvanshi of Surat) which was released in November of 2020, puts the number of Hindi songs identified at 980. The breakup of this number is given as
Film songs – 897
Version songs – 4
Non-film songs – 79
There are another 73 songs identified and listed in the Mukesh Geet Kosh, which are film and non-film songs in regional languages.
On our blog, confining ourselves to Hindi songs only, the total songs thus far published are 818, of which 24 are non-film songs. So we still have a fair number of songs still to be posted here – a number of 162. It would appear that we are quite easily placed to continue posting Mukesh songs. But going forward also continues to become more and more difficult as the songs become more and more difficult to trace.
Well, I should also not make it sound so difficult, because in the recent couple of years, there is a sudden spurt in the online availability of songs. More and more songs are becoming available as more and more music lovers, collectors and music companies have begun uploading heretofore unavailable and rare songs. Probably the pandemic put a new perspective to the vulnerability of life itself. Probably there is good money to be made as the online advertising business is becoming more and more lucrative, and the option to monetize and earn money from advertisements is bringing about a kind if revolution in the online availability of music.
I will not dwell further on this analysis – that is not my purpose. Just an expression that we are in a situation where now a huge number of songs have become available online – songs that before a couple of years ago were considered as hard to trace.
Considering our blog, these numbers now suggest that there are 103 film songs, and 55 non film songs that we still have to bring on board to cover the “official” complete set of Mukesh songs. The path going forward does not seem to be all that difficult after all.
However, this year, and especially this week, is special. The birth centenary of this soulful singer falls on the coming Saturday, 22nd July. It is a once in a life time celebration. With the help of our resident Mukesh expert, Mahesh ji, we are planning to post Mukesh songs every day of this week – songs that are rare, obscure and less heard.
After having gone through 818 songs, we have pretty much touched almost all songs of Mukesh that are well known. Now we are reaching out to the lesser known films, which have songs that have gone unnoticed and belong to the category of unheard or lesser heard songs, if not rare. And not to err on the side of omission, there is a good number of non-film songs that are still waiting to be brought on board.
Launching this week of celebration, we already have a post earlier in the day from Mahesh ji from an almost obscure film ‘Farz Aur Pyaar’ from 1971. With this post, I bring on board another song from the 1970s.
The film is ‘Apraadhi’ from 1974. I checked and find that this film is making its debut today on the blog. The film comes from the banner of CS Productions, Bombay and it is directed by Jugal Kishore, a name that is quite well familiar I am sure. The lead pair in this film is Kiran Kumar and Yogita Bali. The rest of the cast is listed, as per Geet Kosh – Imtiaz, Jaishri T, Chandrashekhar, Bhagwan, Jagdish Raj, Rajan Haksar, Keshto Mukherjee, Mohan Sherry, Brahmchari, Maruti, Gopal Sehgal, Mumtaz Begum, Shri Bhagwan, Baby Neeta, Master Vijay, Satya Devi, Ratna, Naginder, Sattar, Rajpal, Omi Chopra, Bholanath, Madhu, Sheila, Geeta, Gop, Jugal Kishore, and Shashi Chauhan.
The film has 4 songs. All songs have been penned by Hasrat Jaipuri and the music is composed by Usha Khanna. The song list has one solo song by Mukesh, two solo songs by Suman Kalyanpur, and one duet of Suman Kalyanpur with Mahendra Kapoor.
Today’s Mukesh song is performed on screen by Kiran Kumar. The film is a crime thriller, with Kiran Kumar playing the role of a police inspector who goes underground in disguise to track drug dealer and a murderer. On screen we see this song being performed in a tonga to begin with. The tonga is being driven by Yogita Bali, who also appears in a disguise. In the beginning of the video clip, actors Bhagwan and Gopal Sehgal make a very brief entry, before the camera cuts to the tonga and cyclists on the road.
Let us listen to this wonderful rendition. Mukesh is what he is – makes every song an endearing experience. How that song gets used on screen, now that is a different matter.

Song – Main Dhool Ka Udta Baadal (Apradhi) (1974) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Hasrat Jaipuri, MD – Usha Khanna
Lyrics
main dhool ka udta baadal
main dhool ka udta baadal
gaata lehraata jaaun
manzil meri main na jaanu
phir bhi chalta jaaun
main dhool ka udta baadal
main dhool ka udta baadal
gaata lehraata jaaun
manzil meri main na jaanu
phir bhi chalta jaaun
duniya mujhko kuchh bhi samjhe
sab ke main to kaam aaun
yaar ka main yaar bhi hoon
yaar ka main saath nibhaaun
naa farishta aadmi hoon
sabke jee ki roshni hoon
roshni hoon
main dhool ka udta baadal
gaata lehraata jaaun
manzil meri main na jaanu
phir bhi chalta jaaun
main dhool ka udta baadal
main dhool ka udta baadal
nafraton se door hoon main
pyaar meri zindgani
hoon sabhi ke dil ka pyaara
kya budhaapa kya jawaani
mere peechhe ye zamaana
aasmaan par aashiyaana
aashiyaana
main dhool ka udta baadal
gaata lehraata jaaun
manzil meri main na jaanu
phir bhi chalta jaaun
main dhool ka udta baadal
main dhool ka udta baadal
main dhool ka udta baadal
main dhool ka udta baadal
main dhool ka udta baadal
