Hullo Atuldom

A very very Happy Holi to all the followers of this wonderful blog. May there be lots of ‘rang and umang’ all around.

I have been following this blog for 13 years i.e. from March 2009. The head-over-heels involvement began almost instantly. I see that 66 songs, connected with this colourful festival, have been posted in all these years. I find a few songs showcasing the festival have been posted on ‘non-holi’ days too. So that must indicate that we will not have sufficient songs in coming years to post on festival days. But that is not so.

The film industry has been in existence since 1912/1913, and its romance with the festival of colours may have started almost immediately. (I did my own searching, on our blog, and found a post by Sudhirji where he has mentioned that “the songs of Holi go as far back as 1931.”)

A search on Google for the first song of Holi in Indian films came up with the song from Mehboob Khan’s “Aurat”. That song is on the blog with a post by Sudhirji which I have spoken of in the previous para. In that post he has written, and I quote

“As is inseparable, the festival of Holi and its songs from our lives, so it is also inseparable from the Hindi film screen. It is no wonder that the most celebrated of all the festivals on the Hindi screen is this festival of colors.” He also writes “In fact, many times, the situation of Holi is simply engineered into the storyline. Just so that one more song and dance sequence can be inserted into the screenplay.”

That being the love between the festival of colours and films, we will never run out of songs to post. I don’t remember the last time I wrote out a Holi-Song for the blog, but I recalled a few possible songs for the festival this year. And as is my habit I have tried to combine two occasions with this one post.

18th March would have been the 84th birthday of the smart, cute, gentleman actor Shashi Kapoor -of the charming smile. The DTH channel, that I currently follow, keeps playing interviews of yesteryear heroines like Moushumi Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore, Zarina Wahab etc. All of them have one thing to say about this actor – “He was very gracious and courteous. Very caring and went out of his way to make the ladies comfortable”. He never had any qualms about acting the second lead and we know of his pairing with Amitabh Bachchan, but he was equally at ease sharing screen space with Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra etc. He may not have been the best of dancers, so what, he moved with a sense of rhythm and never seemed to miss a beat.

Today’s song is from the 1981 release “Ek Aur Ek Gyarah” that was directed by Ashok Roy. It had Neetu Singh, Zarina Wahab, Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Prem Chopra, Om Prakash, P. Jairaj, Bharat Bhushan, Asrani, Master Bhagwan, etc in the cast. Laxmi-Pyare and Majrooh Sultanpuri were responsible for the music and produced by Ram Prasad Sharma. This holi-song is sung by Hemlata, Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. It has all the standard, filmy, elements needed viz. dry and wet colours, bhang, and eve-teasing too towards the end of the song. But we can also see the lady replying sternly to the guy that “joote maaroongi”. If we see the dance closely, at one point we have Shashi Kapoor desperately trying to match Neetu Singh step-for-step and breaking into some choreography of his own. A thing that always catches my attention in holi-songs is however wet the actors get their dresses are dry in the very next instant.

I must say that I have actively participated in the merry-making of Holi and I have never seen anyone go crazy yelling ‘holi hai’. I have never seen people breaking into song and dance about it. Possible that these things happen in Brij bhoomi, and parts of North India. I would like to tour that region during holi, if possible. Also I would like to see the Lath-Maar Holi of Nandgaon and Barsana.

Happy Holi to one and all once again.

Remembering Shashi Kapoor …………

‘PANCHAM-RAFI’ Jodi’s Variety Songs – 5
———————————————————

Welcome all to today’s post which is coming after a long gap of more than two years. In this series we discussed song by ‘Pancham-Rafi’ jodi. This series was basically inspired by an article on the blog ‘Pancham and Only Pancham’ – and the title of the article is ‘Tribute to Rafi Sahab on 28th Death Anniversary‘, published on Rafi Sb’s twenty-eighth ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ on 31.07.2008. This article lists out the ‘variety of songs by the genius -Pancham-Rafi’ jodi based on different ‘genres’ of music.

When I came across the above article I thought to share this list with readers on our blog too. So, when I started this series in ‘2015’ with this song – “Jaag Devta Naag Devta – nine out of the twenty songs listed in the article were already posted on the blog. After that, I shared three more songs viz. – “Raqqaasa Mera Naam, Ae Sahib Sabko Salaam“, “Maine Kab Chaaha Ke Dulha Banoonga” and “Maakhan Chor Nandkishore Manmohan Ghanshyam Re“. The remaining songs were shared by our team members from time to time, and all these twenty songs are on the blog now.

Readers can go through the list in the article mentioned above. As the songs in this list were already getting posted on the blog, I had in the post for the song “Maine Kab Chaaha Ke Dulha Banoonga” mentioned that I will include some more songs in this series, not on the basis of music-genres, but these ‘special songs’ are from the category of being ‘the only Rafi song in a movie where music was composed by RD Burman.

Today’s song is one such song and it is from the movie ‘Phir Wohi Raat’ (1980).

This film was directed by Danny Dengzongpa for Prithvi Pictures, Bombay. The star cast includes Rajesh Khanna, Kim (new discovery), Shashikala, AK Hangal, Suresh Oberoi, Lalita Pawar, Tamanna, Aruna Irani, Danny Dengzongpa, Om Shivpuri, Shobha Khote, Jagdeep, Mukri, Bhagwan, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Madhu Malhotra, Shashi Kiran, Manmauji, Prakash, Lalita Kumari, Brahm Bharadwaj, Ranjeet Sood, Jugnu, Chand Usmani, Moolchand, Gopal Saigal, Master Chirag and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.08.1980 with restricted viewing (Adults Only) certificate.

This movie had six songs, all written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed to music by RD Burman. Here is the list of the songs of this movie,

Today’s song, the only Rafi song, in this movie is lip-synced on screen by actor Jagdeep.

Today 29th March 2021 is eighty-second birth anniversary (born on 29.03.1939) of actor Jagdeep. He passed away last year on 08th July 2020. As a tribute to him we will listen and enjoy this entertaining song from this movie. The song is ‘joie-de-vivre’ where other than Jagdeep we can see Mohan Choti, Bhagwan, Mukri, Birbal, Gopal Saigal and others also performing with him.

Also wishing herewith is ‘Happy Holi’ to all. Though the song is not a ‘holi’ song but ‘holi’ celebrations can be enjoyed this year ‘in house’ only – with playing this song and ‘taking a jig’ on this vibrant Pancham composition.

4533 Post No. : 16098

In about mid-1940s, there was a demand for dancers in Hindi films following the success of dancers like Azurie and Cuckoo. The demand for dancers can be gauged from the fact that during 1945-50, Cuckoo worked in about 75 films of which she did as many as 34 films in 1950 alone. This ‘demand-supply’ mismatch for dancers led to the entry of new dancers in the Hindi film industry such as Mohana, Helen, Sheila Vaz, Roopmala, Kanchanmala, Kumkum etc during the late 40s and early 50s. One of the lesser known dancers who made a entry into this category during this period was Heera Sawant.

I became aware of Heera Sawant for the first time a few years back while browsing the pages of ‘Filmindia’ magazines available on-line. I had seen a couple of pictures of her in the film ‘Hua Savera’ (1948) in March 1948 issue of the magazine. At that time, I thought that she was one of those actors who came and vanished from Hindi films. But it was not so as I came to know a few months back while collecting the information for my articles on the some of the lesser known dancers of Hindi films.

Today, December 15th is the 85th birthday of Heera Sawant (born on 15/12/1935).

Heera Sawant was born in Sawantwadi taluka of Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. She was the eldest among 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Her father was in the business of motor parts in Mumbai. Soon, the family shifted to Mumbai. She did her schooling at St. Teresa High School and completed her Matriculation. She got entry in the Prithvi Theatres as an actor through her neighbour, a brother of actress Hemavati (wife of D K Sapru) who was already associated with acting in the plays of Prithvi Theatres. During this period, Heera Sawant started learning kathak dance from Master Mohanlal.

Heera Sawant got her first break in Hindi film, ‘Hua Savera’ (1948) when the producer and director of the films saw her performance in one of Prithvi Theatres’ plays. She got the second lead actress’s role with Sapru and Nayantara being the lead actors. The film did not fare well at the box office. However, she got some more assignments after the release of her maiden film. It was her semi-classical dance song, Aarti karo Shankar ki in ‘Naag Panchami’ (1953) which made her popular as a dancer. With this song, she got type-cast as dancer in most of her subsequent films.

In 1964, Heera Sawant turned a producer with her maiden Hindi film ‘Tarzan and Delilah’ (1964). She also produced a couple of Marathi films. Her 3rd Marathi film could not be released resulting in a huge financial loss for her.

Heera Sawant got married to Sundar Arya, a Punjabi businessman. After her husband’s death, she stays in Ahmednagar. [Heera Sawant’s biography is based on an interview which was posted on Shishir Krishna Sharma’s blog, ‘Beete Hue Din’ in May 2019].

The active years of filmy career of Heera Sawant was from 1948 to 1969 during which she acted in around 125 films of which around 75 films were in the decade of 1950s. A majority of her films were in the genre of religious, costume drama, action and stunt.

As mentioned earlier, when she ventured into film productions sometime in the first half of 1960s, her acting career seems to have taken a back seat. This was also the period when Helen was the reigning dancer in Hindi films and new dancers cum side actresses such as Bela Bose, Aruna Irani, Minu Mumtaz, Jeevan Kala, Lakshmi Chhaya, Madhumati etc established themselves in the Hindi film industry. By early 1970s, Heera Sawant has virtually retired from the Hindi films.

Some of the popular songs picturised on her are as under:

Song Movie (year)
tim tima tim tim tima tim taare ‘Har Har Mahadev’ (1950)
saari raat jaage laage jo tose nainwaa ‘Baaraati’ (1954)
shama pe aake parwaane ‘Meenaar’ (1954)
tedhi tedhi hamse phire saari duniya ‘Musaafir’ (1957)
mere dard-e-jigar ki har dhadkan ‘Nausherwan-e-Adil’ (1957)
ritu aaye ritu jaaye sakhi ri ‘Bansari Bala’ (1957)
dil milaate jaaiye nazaren milaate jaaiye ‘Return of the Superman’ (1960)

On the occasion of 85th birth day of Heera Sawant, I present one of her dance songs from the film ‘Vazir-e-Azam’ (1961). The song is ‘daghebaaz kyun toone mera dil chheena’ sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Pushpa Marathe. The song is written by Hairat Sitapuri which is set to music by Robin Banerjee.

This is a song picturised on Master Bhagwan and Heera Sawant to divert the attention of the prison guards to facilitate the escape of Suresh from the prison. The orchestration of the song sounds like that of O P Nayyar.

August 1st

Important for me, used to be my mom’s birthday. Thinking of her has only reinforced my feelings that the song with this post convey. She was one lively person who smiled through her illness and never let us know how much pain she was going through. She was always ready to accompany my dad on whatever tour he chose to organise. And I am sure they enjoyed every bit of their time and life together. That is the exact feeling that today’s song speaks of.

“Live life as if there are no tomorrows” – Kal Kya Hoga Kis Ko Pata, Abhi Zindagi Ka Le Lo Mazaa.

August 1st also happens to be the birth anniversaries of Meena Kumari and Bhagwan Dada. Meena Kumari, born Mahjabeen Bano, would have been 86 and Bhagwan Dada, born Bhagwan Abhaji Palav, would have been 103.

Both the actors had their share of fame and were lead actors in many movies. Master Bhagwan, as Bhagwan Dada used to be known in the early years, started his career in the era of silent films. And Meena Kumari stepped into films as a child artist sometimes in the early 1940s. They were part of a few movies together where Meena Kumari was the heroine and Bhagwan lead the comic side plot for example ‘Bandish’ (1955), ‘Main Bhi Ladki Hoon’ (1964} etc.

They had successful careers through the 1960s. We lost Meena Kumari in the beginning of the 70s but Bhagwan Dada was still there and I remember seeing him in many movies doing his signature step dance. In the initial stages of my movie watching I was unaware that he was such a huge star of his times. I always saw him as a side-kick or a dancer who was given prominence in various group dance numbers. Much later I happened to see his songs of ‘Albela’ and I realized that he was being copied by the actors of the 70s – HE was their inspiration. After associating with this blog, I read about his life and times and felt sad that what went up had to go down too. Probably he too subscribed to the thoughts of today’s song and lived in his “todays as if there were no tomorrows”.

Rose Movies’ ‘Kasme Vaade’ (1978) was produced and directed by Ramesh Behl. It had Rakhee, Neetu Singh, Amitabh Bachchan, Randhir Kapoor in the main lead with Rekha in a guest appearance and Amjad Khan in special appearance. Master Bhagwan (Dada) was there for one song at the start of the film. That song was meant to show the happy-go-lucky character of Randhir Kapoor. We find RK on a night out with his cronies, running amok in the streets doing wheelies etc. (it is obvious that all the motor bike stunts are by a body double) and that is the situation for today’s song.

I had always wanted to present this song on the blog to highlight Bhagwan Dada’s steps and dancing. Finally, here it is.

“Labelaa”(1966) was directed by Bhagwan for Young India Entertainers, Bombay. The movie had Sujit Kumar and Kum Kum in lead roles. Others in the movie were Bhagwan, Om Prakash, Helen, Bela Bose, Ratanmala, Maruti, Anwar Husain etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Two songs from the movie have been covered in the blog.

Here is the third song from “Labelaa”(1966) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by C Ramchandra Asha Bhonsle and chorus. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.

The song is picturised as a dance song on Bhagwan Dada and Bela Bose, with many others also present. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identfy the other actors visible in the picturisation. The video has several cuts so putting together entire lyrics is a tall order and there may be errors in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help correct the lyrics.

Blog Day : 3901 Post No. : 14952

This song is from Master Bhagwan’s film ‘Damaad’ (1951).

This is the film which inspired Bhagwan to write a comedy social musical film story for his evergreen film Albela. In the decade of 1940’s, Bhagwan had specialised in low budget C grade action and stunt films. Usually his films would be completed in Rs. 60 to 70 thousand rupees only. He used to churn out films after films with the same set of actors with almost the same story in all his films. The audience of Master Bhagwan’s films came to the theatre to see his antics and comedy, coupled with action scenes of fighting and incredible stunts.

Usually Bhagwan never played the hero’s role in his own films. The hero in his films would necessarily be Baburao Pehelwan and Bhagwan used to be his side kick. Both had their love interests – usually the heroine for Baburao and her friend or maid for Bhagwan. Like Baburao and Bhagwan, even the lady actors were fixed. He had a set of such actresses like Shanta Patel, Chanchal, Leela Gupte, Vitha Lokare, Usha Shukla etc. They used to be in his films by turns. Actor Azim Bhai (who later became the famous Fight Master in Hindi films) was usually the good natured but timid employer of these two. Their job was to protect the Seth ji from goons, fight with them and finally win the girls in the end. Film after film the same story was used with slight changes here and there. The audience was least bothered about the story or the histrionics etc. They came for the dialogues, the fights and stunts.

Very few people know that both Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar were his great fans. When Bhagwan fell on bad times and shifted to a 2-room tenement in a chawl in Dadar, Dilip Kumar, while going for his daily shootings, used to stop at the chawl, honk till Bhagwan appeared in the gallery and waved to him, and then he proceeded to his work.

It was Raj Kapoor, who used to see his shootings in Jagriti studio, very near to RK studio. He once suggested to him to try making a social film. Incidentally, his good friend C Ramchandra (Anna for Bhagwan) also pressed him to dare making a social film. CR even promised him to give music to his social film in his popular name C Ramchandra (he gave music to Bhagwan’s films in the name of ‘Annasaheb ‘ till then). Bhagwan started thinking seriously on this issue. At that very time he got an offer to work in a social comedy film, to be produced by Beema Films of MT Mudnani and directed by Brij Rani. Since this was a social film Bhagwan wanted to give it a try. He wanted to assess the feasibility of making his own social film.

The film was ‘Damaad’ (1951). The story was simple. A simpleton is made a ‘ghar jamai’ (resident son-in-law) and has a miserable life. Incidentally, he becomes a successful singer. The film was absolutely an ordinary one. Being a director himself, Bhagwan understood the potential of the story to become a hit film. In addition the offer of C Ramchandra’s music was also inviting him. The film ‘Damaad’ came and went without making any ripples. Neither the producer made any more films, nor the director got any other film. The cast and the 3 MDs employed were also C grade anyway.

Taking inspiration from film ‘Damaad’, Bhagwan started writing the story of ‘Albela’ . For this film, he needed a cast other than his usual C grade film cast. Other actors were booked but no reputed heroine was ready to work in his film. Those days, Bhagwan’s name was only associated with C grade action stunt films. Then one day he approached Geeta Bali. She agreed – a bit reluctantly – to listen to his story. After listening to the story, Geeta Bali realized the potential of a hit film and said yes.

The shooting of ‘Albela’ started but Bhagwan kept it a secret. After few weeks of shooting, he invited Anna (CR) to come to see the shooting, without telling him anything. Anna went to Jagriti studios to see the shooting. After some shots were taken, he asked, ‘Bhagwan, this is your film, but where are the fights?”. Bhagwan smiled and said,”Anna, there are no fights. This is a social film I am making which you wanted me to do. Now it is your turn to stand by what you had promised to give your best music”. Sure enough C Ramachandra gave immortal music to film ‘Albela’ and the rest is history as they say.

Bhagwan’s planning for ‘Albela’ was so perfect that he got the Censor Certificate on 13-12-1951 and the film was released on next day i.e. on 14-12-1951 at Imperial Talkies in Bombay. Within 3-4 days, the film became houseful in every show. It was so successful that it overshot the combined collection of first week opening of BR Chopra’s ‘Afsaana’, Raj Kapoor’s ‘Awaara’, Dev Anand’s ‘Baazi’, AVM’s ‘Bahaar’ and Nitin Bose’s ‘Deedaar’, all released in 1951 only!

The tremendous success of ‘Albela’ made the financiers, producers and directors to line up Bhagwan’s doorstep with project proposals. The success of ‘Albela’ had also gone to the head of Bhagwan dada. He did not realize or acknowledge the contribution of Geeta Bali and C Ramchandra’s music to its success. He thought that it was due to him and he went on signing film after films in that period. As his new films started failing, the incomplete films were abandoned and ‘Albela’ became his swan song. The downward slide of his career and popularity started right after this film, although some more films like ‘Bhagam Bhag’ (1956) etc were hits-again due to music and Kishore Kumar.

Anyway the producer NT Madnaney never ever tried to produce any more films after ‘Daamad’, which was not at all successful at the box office.
The screenplay and direction was by Brij Rani. There were 3 composers, Shamoo who had given music to ‘ Yeh hai zindagi-48’ and ‘Begunah’ (1949) with Haribhai. Indravadan Bhatt had given music to 10 films in the late 40s. Ram Panjwani had been an actor in Berozgaar-36 and Chhotisi duniya-39, a singer in Damad-51 and Maa ka pyar-49, an MD for Magroor-50 and Damad-51 and also a Lyricist for one song in film Teen Batti chaar Rasta-53

The story was more or less same as ‘Albela’ – a good for nothing fellow sings well and makes a fortune – that is the one line story of this film.

Chamak (Bhagwan) is too simple a person, who is a teacher in a school, where even his students make fun of him. He gets married to a rich man’s daughter-Geeta (Krishna Kumari). Chamak loses his job and his father-in-law takes him to his house in a bigger town. Chamak is impressed with all the wealthy living and eats like a hog and sleeps like a dog every day. Honored initially as the son-in-law of the house, slowly he is despised, insulted and treated shabbily by in laws for doing nothing.

One day when Chamak is singing alone, the manager of the local theatre hears him, gets impressed and offers him job of a singer. Chamak accepts it and in no time becomes a famous singer and tours all over India. Seeing that he is famous, his in laws start pampering him. Now Chamak has become clever. He teaches a lesson to his in laws and finally they realize their folly and all is well that ends well.

The cast of the film was Bhagwan, Krishna Kumari, Yashodhara Katju, Protima Devi, Cuckoo, Habib, Kathana, Ishu Jahagirdar etc. etc. The story and screenplay was by director Brijrani.

Brij Rani was born in 1921 at Shikarpur, Sindh province, in a well to do business family. She studied up to Matriculation and also qualified as a Middle School Teacher. However, she opted to join films as an actress. Her first film was Jeewan Jyoti-37, doing an un credited small role to get the feel, followed by Calcutta after Midnight-37, Aurat-40, Wayda-40, Ulti Ganga-42, Daughters of the Jungle-43, Bhagta Bhoot-43, Circus Girl-43 and Lal Haveli-44.

She was getting roles only in stunt films and C grade films. Being from a business community, she started her own company- Bharat productions and herself made stunt films.

Meanwhile she continued acting in films like Lal Haveli-44 and acted and directed film Circus King-46 and film Sajni-47. Then there was a gap. probably she looked after her family. In 1951, she directed film Daamaad-51.

As far as Yashodhara Katju is concerned, there is a bizarre story behind her entry into films. Earlier there was a Kashmiri girl working in Hindi films,in the late 30s. Her name was Shyama Zutshi. Actor Chandramohan too was a Kashmiri Bramhin and held the view that Kashmiri Bramhin girls should not work in films as it is below their dignity. He strongly opposed Shyama’s work in the films and put lot of pressure on her to quit films. Fed up of his pestering and also afraid of his anger, Shyama left films. Her last film was Khooni Jadugar-1939.

However, soon after this, yet another girl who too was a Kashmiri Bramhin came into films from 1941. Chandramohan tried all his pressure tactics and tried to force her out of the films, but this girl was different. She was tough and did not fear him or yield to his intimidations. She continued to work in films unabated. Chandramohan died in 1949, but this girl worked in films from 1941 to 1974. She worked in 86 films and earned quite a name.

Her name was Yashodhara Katju ( 15-4-1928 to 1974 ). She was the niece of Pt. Nehru, but never ever used her highly placed relations to get work. Her father K L Katju was U.P.’s well known politician and also a senior bureaucrat. They were from Lahore, where Yashodhara had studied upto Senior Cambridge and also dancing. She was a leading comedienne in the early 50s and had formed a pair with Gope for some films. She married a Navy officer and spent her retired life as a housewife, away from filmdom.

Today’s song is actually in 2 parts, but it is combined in one video. The singers are Sulochana kadam(for Yashodhara katju), Ram Panjwani (for Bhagwan), Ishu Jahagirdar (for Dhobi), and Shrimati Vishnilal ( for elderly lady). VISHNI LAL was born in Hyderabad( Sindh) in 1926. She came to Bombay in 1943 to sing in films. Ram Daryani recommended her to Khemchand Prakash and he gave a break to her in film Chiragh-43. She sang in very few films like Qurbani-43,Anjuman-48 Mitti ke khilaune-48,Maghroor-50,Daamaad-51,Chhoti Duniya-53 etc.

Her family shifted to Bombay in 1947, after Partition. She was married to a businessman Mansukhani. She then settled in Dubai, with her family.

Let us now enjoy the song video.

“Dulhan”(1958) was produced by A A Nadiadwala and directed by V M Vyas for Pushpa Pictures, Bombay. This “social” movie had Nirupa Roy, Rajkumar, Bhagwan, Nanda, Jageerdaar, Sheila Kashmiri, Manorama, Agha, Jeewan, Indira Bansal, Munshi Munaqqa, Maqbool, Iqbal, Kanchan, Ansari, Moti (the dog) etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it. Four songs from the movie have been covered in the blog.

Here is the fifth song from “Dulhan”(1958) to appear in the blog. This song is a duet sung by Shamshad Begam and Rafi. P L Santoshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

The song is sung in a rock and roll style (which was quite popular in India at that time. The song is picturised as a club dance song. One can see Bhagwan lip syncing in Rafi’s voice. I am unable to identify the lady who lip syncs in Shamshad Begam’s voice. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.

With this song, the blog now has 4800 songs from the decade of 1950s (1951 to 1960), which is easily the most well represented decade in the blog.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 24

पल दो पल का साथ हमारा, पल तो पल के याराने हैं
इस मंज़िल पर मिलने वाले

उस मंज़िल पर खो जाने हैं

Yes, we know, and we realize it. But still, it does seem that this साथ was not even justified as दो पल or even one. खो जाने वाली मंज़िल, कुछ बहुत ही जल्दी आ गई. . .

Skipping the letters ‘ढ’ and ‘ण’
‘ढ’ – very few songs starting with this letter – either all used, or not applicable to this series.
‘ण’ does not have any song starting with this letter. Made a very interesting discovery as I browsed the Hindi dictionary for words starting with ‘ण’. There is only one word that starts with this letter. More interestingly, the letter itself has uses as a monosyllabic word, and has at least 10 meanings associated. Wow.

So we come to the letter ‘प’ today. And here is a wonderfully lovely song to go with it.

Today’s episode of this series brings up the second song of the film ‘Magic Carpet’ (1964), one of the ‘jaadugar sainyaan’ category of films, which were a popular genre in the 1950s and 60s. Although classified as B/C grade films, this category of films had their own distribution circuits, their own cinema halls where they were exhibited, and a very loyal coterie of audience who would not let go even one of this category without a visit.

The film is produced by AM Bhanji under the banner of Unique Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Babubhai Mistry. In the Geet Kosh, the cast of actors is listed as a very short list – Chitra, Azaad, BM Vyas and Bhagwan. The additional names of actors in this film, as taken from the casting credits in the film (that has now become thankfully available in public domain), are Bela Bose, Dalpat, Bimla Kashmiri, Kesri, Aroon, Maqbool, Radhe Shyam, Arvind Kumar, Mehroo Bai, Bakshi, Master Kishore, Kalla, Rafiq, Sandow, MD, Dawood, Amir, Musa, Julian, Khalil, Rehman, Salim, Zippy and Nagina.

Geet Kosh lists five songs for this film, penned by four poets, Jia Dehlavi, Shakeel Nomaani, Aish Farooqi and Farooque Kaiser. This song is written by Shakeel Nomaani. The music – by Ram Prasad. Yes, he is the same Ram Prasad Sharma, father of Pyaarelal (of Lxmikant Pyaarelal duo) and Ganesh. A brief about this music director is included in the post for the song “Antul Habi Ke Dekho Kabhi. . .“.

The singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle. On screen, we see this song initiated by Bhagwan Dada, and a lady, whose name, if I may hazard a guess, is Bimla Kashmiri. I could be wrong, and I welcome inputs from more knowledgeable readers and friends, to correct or confirm this guess.

As the song progresses, we also see Azaad and Chitra in the clip. Majority of the performance of the song is by Bhagwan and Bimla Kashmiri. Azaad does not appear to lip sync any of the lines, but Chitra does take up lip syncing in one of the stanzas. So in all, the onscreen performance and mapping to the playback voices, is kind of mixed up in this song.

And so, this song brings up the 24th episode in this series. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Pyaar Ki Baaten Koi Na Jaane Yaad Teri Phir Aaye  (Magic Carpet) (1964) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Shakeel Nomaani, MD – Ram Prasad
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

pyaar ki baaten koi na jaane
yaad teri phir aaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

dil ko teri tirchhi nazar ne
de diya hai sahaara
dil ko teri tirchhi nazar ne
de diya hai sahaara
jaao aji jhoothe kahin ke
tum na samjhe ishaara
hum shama aur tum parwaane
raaz na khulne paaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

kaabu ab dil par nahin hai
gaa rahi hain bahaaren
kaabu ab dil par nahin hai
gaa rahi hain bahaaren
jaise tujhe dulhan banaane
aa rahi hain bahaaren
door ka jalwa dil na maane
dil se nikle haaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
pyaar ki baaten koi na jaane
yaad teri phir aaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

dekho mujhe aise na dekho
kya kahega zamaana
dekho mujhe aise na dekho
kya kahega zamaana
jaayen kahaan teri gali se
koi nahin hai thikaana
meri ada ke o deewaane
kaun tujhe samjhaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
