Today’s song is from an obscure, neglected film 26th January-(1956).

India got Independence in 1947, but till 1950, we still had the British King as our Head of the country and all British laws and rules applied here. It was only on 26th January 1950 that we shed the title of ” a Dominion of the British Empire” and we became an Independent Republic. We had our own Head of the Government and our own laws and rules to follow. We had our president and Prime Minister and we were a Democratic Nation – no more a part of any kingdom anymore.

Till 26-1-1950, India was a Dominion of Britain who had all the Executive Authority exercised through the Governor General of India. We had a Britisher – Lord Mountbatten as India’s First Governor General till June 1948 when Chakrawarti Rajgopalachari took over as the First Indian Governor General of India. All this meant the Independence granted to us on 15-8-1947 was not complete till we became a Sovereign Democratic Republic of India, with our own Constitution on 26-1-1950. Most Indians do not know all these details. This is also the reason why the Republic Day is more important than Independence Day ! But in practice, it is vice versa !!

I am one of the still surviving citizens of India who saw the First Independence Day of our country. Ofcourse, I was just a 7 year old and did not understand its importance so much.N evertheless, I still remember-albeit faintly-the celebrations on roads and public places.

Later on when I joined the college, the first thing that I did was to join NCC. My one uncle was in the Navy, another was in the Army, yet another was in Police and my father was an ex-revolutionary in pre-independence days. No wonder I liked the disciplined way of life. My immediate aim was to be a part of the NCC contingent from our Directorate, for the NCC Parade of 26th January in Delhi. I got promotions and became a Senior Under Officer in NCC. Meanwhile I headed a team of Guards during the Chinese war of 1962. I was selected for the 1964 Republic day NCC Parade at Delhi. During the camp period at Delhi, I was appointed the Camp Cadet Adjutant, that is Chief of the Contingent. I proudly participated in the Republic Day NCC Parade at Delhi on 26th january 1964. I was also awarded ” Lt.Col. P. Papatla Best Cadet Trophy “.

All these memories came to my mind when I started writing on film 26th January-1956. The film was made by Sehgal Productions. The director was Ramesh Sehgal and the Music was composed byC.Ramchandra for the 7 songs written by Rajendra krishna. 3 songs are already on this Blog. The story of the film was framed on India’s life story, symbolically. The film’s name was also 26th January aka Bharati. The effort was very childish, in my opinion. Here is the story….

In a far off country a beautiful girl – Bharati – was living. She was so beautiful that thousands of people wanted her love. She , however, loved a young handsome man – Jana. Dhani was another person who loved Bharati and hated Jana. With help from some foreigners, Dhani kidnapped Bharati. Instead of giving her to Dhani, the kidnappers kept her with them.

The queen of the foreigners made Bharati dance for her. When Jana tried to rescue Bharati, he was captured. The queen fell in his love, but he neglected her. Enraged, the queen jailed Bharati and Jana was thrown into the sea, but he was saved by fishermen. He was again caught and thrown to hungry lions. Here he was saved by a Rishi. The rishi motivated the citizens to rise against the queen and rescue Bharati and Jana. They did so, but one of the citizens killed Rishi.

Dhani again tried to kidnap Bharati. This time the people and Jana killed Dhani and rescued Bharati. Finally Bharati and Jana united.

The cast of the film was Ajit, Nalini jaywant, Sapru,Johnny Walker, B.M.Vyas, Leela Mishra, Balraj Mehta, Nishi (making her Debut in this film) and many others. A very odd name in the cast can be seen- Balraj Mehta. I am sure, hardly anyone has ever heard his name, but he was a very active person in his life.

Born on 22-4-1918 at Lahore, Balraj Mehta was the son of Sukh Dayal Mehta – Superintendent in the Commissioner’s office at Lahore. He completed Matriculation from Central Model High School and B.A. from Dayal Singh College of Lahore in 1939.

He was active in the Students’ union and held the General Secretary’s post of Punjab University Students’ Union, in 35-37. He organised the All India Student Federation conference in 36/37. He was a born Leader. He was interested in acting on stage. In 1944, he founded Indian National Theatre (I.N.T.), which is a very famous institution in India now also. He wrote, directed and produced its first stage drama ” Aawaaz’ in 1945.

By now he was married and needed to earn money. He joined the film line. He acted first in ‘Dulla Bhatti’ in 1939-40. Then came Sajjan-41,Panna-44, Parakh-44, Patharon ka Saudagar-44, Gulami-45 and lastly Pul-47.In the period 1944-45, he also became Secretary of Film Artistes’ Association and served it for a long time. In 1947, he entered Politics. After Independence, he became a journalist. After this I found his name in the cast of film 26th January -1956 and Ayodhyapati-56 and then as a Director of film Trunk Call-1960. However, there is no information about him after this.

Here is the 4th song from this film, sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Enjoy….

Song- Ro ro ke dil pukaare (26th January)(1956) Singer-Lata Mangeshkar, Lyricist- Rajendra Krishna, MD- C.Ramchandra

Lyrics

ro ro ke dil pukaare
ro ro ke dil pukaare
dhoondhhe tere ishaare ae ae
dhoondhhe tere ishaare ae
bas ek baar aaja
aaja
kehte hain gham ke maare
ab hum hain besahaare ae ae
ab hum hain besahare ae
bas ek baar aaja
aaja

din ab raha nahin din
ik raat ho gayi hai
din ab raha nahin din
ik raat ho gayi hai ae ae
ye dil hi jaanta hai ae ae
kya baat ho gayi hai
bairi huye sitaare
qismat se hum to haare ae ae
qismat se hum to haare ae
bas ek baar aaja
aaja

laaun kahaan se ab main guzra hua zamaana
phoolon ke darmiyaan thha jab mera aashiyana
hanske jo din gujaare
kaise koi bisaare ae ae
kaise koi bisaare ae
bas ek bar aaja
aaja
ro ro ke dil pukaare
dhoondhe tere ishaare ae ae
dhoondhe tere ishaare
bas ek baar aaja
aaja

Arunkumar ji,

Many Thanks for posting this melodious song.
For a long time, I am contemplating writing on CR-Lata combo. During my early days of liking HFM, I did not give much ear to their songs as I was yet to explore beyond Albela and Anarkali.

Later, I realized that there is a whole world beyond the above two listed films.

I always wanted to represent this particular song for my post.

Another important aspect of this film is Lata’s solo O Chaand Mujhko Zara Yeh Bata remains elusive and is a much discussed song as everyone is trying to unearth it.

Mahesh ji,
Thanks for your comments.
It is a good idea to do a series on Lata-CR combination. Please note that I had done a 10 songs series on Lata-CR duets titled ” Lata -CR songs with CR autobiography translation” during the dates 30-1-2013 to 11-2-2013.
I am mentioning this so that you can safely exclude these songs from your proposed series and save your efforts.
I wish you best of luck for your proposed Lata-CR series.
