Blog Day : |
5619 | Post No. : | 18100 |
Only one song is being covered daily most of the days, with some exceptions. Do our regulars recall the date when the blog saw its last century ? Last blog century, which was song post number 18000 for the blog was posted on 18 september 2023 (Blog day number 5540). Today is 6 December 2023 (blog day number 5619). 79 days have passed since the last blog century. So it is clear that the blog is averaging just over one song a day from that day, thus the blog is living upto its name “song a day”. 🙂
After the last blog century, we have had as many as 61 days when one song was covered in the blog. 16 days had two songs. Two days saw a whopping figure of 3 songs being covered. 🙂 Today (6 december 2023) is not going to be any different. Just one song will get covered today as well. Arithmetically savvy people may add up to realise that (62×1) + (16×2) + (2×3)= 100. Yes, it means that the song being covered today is the next blog century, viz Blog post number 18100. Elementary (math) my dear Watson, is it not ?
Even more elementary is the math that 5619-5540 =79 which means this century is getting notched up in 79 days, which is one of the slowest centuries in the blog.
Apart from the fact that as many as 62 days have been song a day in the blog, the contributor wise posts make interesting reading. Here are the details
| Post by | Number of posts |
|---|---|
| Sadanand Kamath | 30 |
| Arunkumar Deshmukh | 27 |
| Peevesie’s mom | 16 |
| Avinash Scrapwala | 13 |
| Atul | 13 |
| Sudhir Kapur | 1 |
Thus we see that as many as 87 posts out of 100 have been guest posts ! Sadanand Kamath jee is the front runner with a whopping 30 posts, followed closely by Arunkumar Deshmukh jee with 27 posts ! Peevesie’s mom with 16 and Avinash Scrapwala with 13. Together these four have done bulk of posting work in the blog.
How come my own contribution is so low ? When I look back, I realise that we had cricket world cup during this period. India was doing very well in the world cup. That led lots of Indians to spend lots of time following cricket and gloating about the performance of India. Collective productivity of India as a nation went for a toss. I was among millions of Indians who shirked their own work while following cricket.
India lost only one match in the tournament and that happened to be the final. So, in effect, all the mental investment of millions of Indians on Indian cricket team went down the drain.
While most other Indians continued to follow Indian cricket immediately thereafter (India vs Australia T20 series started immediately after the world cup), I was among very few who resolved not to follow Indian cricket. I have so far stuck to this resolution. I decided to follow Indian chess players instead. Indians chess players gave Indian chess lovers many news to cheer during these same days. Grand swiss chess tournament (at Isle of Man) was held almost concurrently with cricket world cup. In the grand swiss chess tournament, which was one of the strongest chess tournament of all time, Indians took first place in Open (men) and Women category both. Remember, chess is played in all the 199 countries of the world. Only the top ranked chess players get the opportunity to play this tournament ! More than 10 % participants in this tournament were from India. It shows how strong Indian is in this global sport of chess.
I also realised that unlike cricket and other sports, where most fans are only armchair fans, chess followers can play chess as well, even if not at the same high standards as the top chess players of the world. What is more one can get a fairly good idea of one’s playing strength. A chess player’s playing strength is measured in Elo rating. A grandmaster has an Elo rating of 2500 and above, an International master has an Elo rating of 2400 or so. If ordinary chess players want to know their playing strength, they can participate in FIDE (international Chess Federation) recognised chess tournaments. In these chess tournaments, there is a separate category for lower rated players (Elo rating below 2000). If a chess player considers himself good, he can participate in these tournaments. If he is able to defeat some FIDE rated players, he could gain Eo rating. After a few tournaments, if his Elo rating crosses above 1000, FIDE starts displaying his Elo rating on their site.
Other method is playing online in chess sites. Playing these online games enables these players to get online Elo points (different from FIDE Elo points). This gives online chess players some idea about their own chess playing strength.
I am seriously thinking of learning chess. 🙂 I know the rules, but playing it good enough to win a few matches is still not my cup of tea. I have bought a few books, and bought a few chess softwares. Let us see if all that helps me become a decent chess player with an Elo rating of around 1000. 🙂
So, after the world cup debacle, I am now a days spending my time following chess. That explains why the blog continues to be song a day even after the cricket world cup has got over. 🙂
Unlike other occasions of blog century post, this time I had identified the song for the occasion quite some time back. While discussing a song from this movie, I came across this song that bowled me over. It is an archtypical puraani film ka geet, just the type that I used to listen to between 7:30 AM to 8 AM on Radio Ceylon during our school going days. While listening to these songs, I used to wonder why these singers could not sing like Kishore Kumar. 🙂
Those days I had low opinion about such songs. But today those same songs have aged nicely and have become musical gems.
The song under discussion is a forgotten gem from a forgotten movie called “Jiyo Raja”(1949). It was directed by Nari Ghadiali for Wankalwala Productions, Bombay. This “stunt” movie had Agha, Prakash, Shanta Patel, S Azim, Mumtaz Ali, Munchie, Mustafa, Sheikh, Fakeer Mohammad, Ghulam Rasool, Amir Hussain, Muhammad sandow, Ismail,Azam, Kadar etc in it.
“Jiyo Raja”(1949) had ten obscure songs in it. Two of these songs have been covered in the past.
Here is this sweet and lovely song from “Jiyo Raja”(1949). It is sung by Uma Devi and Yashwant Bhatt. Uma Devi aka Tuntun had such a sweet voice. I love her songs more than her comedy that she took up after her singing career was over. Yashwant Bhatt, the male voice is a relative of our own Khyati jee ! Jagdish Bhatt, husband of Khyati jee, shared this information with our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Arunkumar Deshmukh jee:
“…Yashwant Bhatt was my uncle (father’s second youngest brother). He was considered the King of “Prabhatiya” (morning bhajans) by Radio Rajkot. Prabhatiya that he sang were mainly by the poets of Saurashtra, namely Ganga Sati, Paanbhai, Narsi Mehta and few more. Impacted by his passion about singing, his youngest brother Shri Harish Bhatt also became a singer. Harish Bhatt made K. L. Saigal his guru and on Jan 18th of every year would conduct a program in Sanmukhanand Hall as a tribute to his guru and would sing Saigalji’s songs, accompanied by his wife as a female singer for the duets. I remember my uncle (Harish Bhatt) telling us singing few songs in Hindi movies, but not sure though. Gujarati fans on this blog may have heard a famous song on radio, “Phool kahe bhamraa ne bhamro vaat vahe gunjan maa, Madhav kyaay nathi Madhuvan maa….” written by a famous Gujarati kavi, Shri Harindra Dave and sung by Harish Bhatt. ”
So, here is this rare song from “Jiyo Raja”(1949) that has some distant connection with one of our blog regular. 🙂 Lyrics are by Rajjan. Music is composed by Nisaar Bazmi.
With this song, the blog tally reaches 18100. Yet another blog century. Slow century no doubt but a century nevertheless. No nervous ninetees for us.
Let us celebrate this latest milestone with this lovely song. Let this musical bandwagon keep rolling on and on and let us hope that we keep discovering lots and lots of musical nuggets during our journey. I take this opportunity to thank one and all. It is the support, encouragement, contributions of likeminded music lovers that has been fuelling the blog. Tomorrow we take a fresh guard and march towards the next century milestone.
