Blog Day :

5708 Post No. : 18226

Today’s song is from an almost unknown film Daku Bhupat-1960.

This was a dubbed film, originally made in Telugu as ” Raja Nandini”-1958. The system of spelling the proper nouns in Southern languages is different from most western or North Indian languages. I believe it all depends on the type of alphabet a language has. Some alphabets which are present in Devanagari script languages (like Marathi or Hindi for example) are not present in southern languages. So sounds like T and TH are both spelled as th. Thus Lalita in Hindi becomes Lalitha in south.

Likewise, short pronunciation like A is absent in Bengali language and hence ARUN becomes ORUN. In the south too, words ending with short sounds are absent, hence proper nouns generally end with an additional A. Thus Venkat Prasad in Hindi will become Venkata Prasad in southern languages. Again not all south languages are alike. There is a similarity between Telugu and Kannada, but Tamil and Malayalam scripts and alphabets are on different principles.

All this is explained because the original Telugu film was Raj Nandini, but was spelled as Raja Nandini. I should know, because I was born and brought up in a predominantly Telugu Land – Hyderabad. Not being a Linguist in language details, my above expressions may not apply to all words in the south strictly. These are only my observations and understandings during my travels throughout India for more than 40 years, while I served in the Pharma Industry.

In my last post I had said that “Society affects Film Industry and then Films reflect Society”. In the case of today’s film, it is true. Daku Bhupat was a dreaded name in Saurashtra and Gujarat during 1950 to 1964. He was famous as a ‘Robin Hood’. His gang had 42 dacoits. He killed 87 people and looted lakhs of rupees. It is claimed that during the first general Election in 1951-52 period, the various kings and Princes in Gujarat instigated Bhupat to create anarchy to prove that Democracy was not suitable for India. However the Congress won with a majority, but Bhupat continued unabated. It is also thought that Bhupat migrated to Pakistan later, converted to Muslim religion and lived there till his death.

If you are thinking that the film Daku Bhupat was a film on this man, you are mistaken. Except for the title of the film, the story was the usual Costume drama, woven around a King, Queen and Vazir. It had nothing to do with the actual Daku Bhupat at all !

Filmmakers in areas other than Bombay always looked at the All India Hindi audience as a Gold Mine. Calcutta was the first outside centre which started making Hindi Remakes of their hit Bangla films. Just before them, Marathi filmmakers had begun making bilingual films in Marathi and Hindi. South jumped in only at the end of the 1940’s decade, but their efforts were so intense, that in no time they surpassed all other centres and became the number 2 Hindi filmmakers.

Since the times when the adventurous S.S.Vasan-Producer, Director and Owner of Gemini Studios, made his film ”Chandralekha”- in Hindi in 1948 on a mammoth scale (with over 600 prints of the Hindi version for simultaneous release on All India basis on 24th December 1948), the Southern film industry woke up. After the film Chandralekha was successful, Vasan started making remakes of his Tamil hit films in Hindi one after another. When other filmmakers of the South saw Vasan busy doing this and visiting his bank very often with several bags full of money to deposit, they too joined the bandwagon !

Thus, the entire decades of the 50’s and the 60’s saw many films from South, in the form of Remakes of Southern Hit films, Dubbed or shot at Madras for the All India audience of Hindi films.

After Vasan’s Gemini, A.V.Meiyyappan’s AVM, Nagi Reddy’s Vauhini Studios and L.V.Prasad’s Prasad productions gave many films, made with all Southern, all Bombay or a mixed cast of actors. Many major Heroes of South secretly nurtured a desire to shine in the Hindi belt. They joined this race. Actors like M.G.Ramchandran (MGR), N.T.Tama Rao (NTR), A.Nageshwar Rao (ANR), Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan etc., actresses like Bhanumathy, Jayalalitha, Jamuna etc and character artistes like Relangi, S.V.Ranga Rao etc appeared in Hindi films. ( A very loooong list of such remakes and dubbed films is available on IMDB ). Even today many Southern Hit films are remade or dubbed in Hindi and the addition is, many Hindi Hits are also remade in Southern languages. The West Bengal Film Industry which actually led this trend in the 30’s and the 40’s has fallen way behind now.

In the beginning there was a deluge of south made Hindi films. In the decade of 1950 to 60, almost 50 films came in from the south in the shape of Remakes or Dubbed films. In spite of all this, not many people are acquainted with southern star actors or actresses. Forget those who worked mainly in Hindi films, like Ranjan or Vaijayantimala, Padmini, Ragini etc. initially and then Sridevi, Hema, Rekha etc. How many of us know that, after the wrong entry of Lata’s fictitious 25000 songs in Guiness Book (later withdrawn), there is only One singer of film songs, from the south, who has been decorated with honour in Guinness records on 28-1-2016, after due verification ?

Singer of today’s song – P.SUSHEELA ( born 13-11-1935) is the artiste honoured for recording 17695 on existing verified recorded songs ! She is also honoured by the Asian book of records for singing in the most Indian Languages. Though she has sung many more songs, only the actual verifiable number was considered.

P.Susheela has sung 100 Hindi songs, in addition to 12000+ Telugu, 6000+ Tamil, 5000+ Kannada, 1500 + Malayalam, 120 Sanskrit Devotional, and 9 Simhalese songs. She has sung about 300+ songs in Bangla, Punjabi, Tulu, Badaga and Oriya languages. She was active from 1951 to 2019. Last song was recorded at the age of 84 years. She was also awarded ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 2008. (based on information from psusheela.org, wiki, indiglitz.com. , various old issues of The Hindu and my notes).

The cast of this film was Anjali Devi, N.T.Rama Rao, Relangi, Ragini, Varlaxmi etc. Lyrics by Prem Dhavan and Music by S.L.Merchant. The story of the film was…….The word Daku seems to be a favourite with Hindi movies. As many as 30 films having the word Daku-in the beginning or at the end-in the title were made from 1937 to 1991.There was a Gentleman Daku,a Samundari Daku,a Daku Raja and also an Akhari Daku.Daku aur Bhagwan and Daku aur Mahatma along with Daku munni bai and Daku Hasina entertained people.

If you thought that this film is about the real Daku Bhoopat, who terrorised Gujarat state between 47 to 60,you are mistaken. This is a filmi Daku story.

DAKU BHUPAT and his gang looted the kingdom of Ramraj at the instigation of neighbouring enemy king Tribhuvan. In order to try changing the mind of Tribhuvan, the Prince of Ramraj, Jayachandra (N T Rama Rao) sets out. On the way he is attacked by bandits, but a lovely damsel rescues him from the distress. She is Sridevi(Anjali devi) daughter of Tribhuvan with her mother Vimala(Girija). She dutifully, and with mother’s consent falls in love with the prince. They arrive at the fort and Prince, while talking to King Tribhuvan finds Bhupati’s bandits with loot. He quarrels with King and leaves angrily. However poor fellow somehow finds time to sing a song or two with Sridevi also.

Bhupati learns about their meeting and in fear of future danger decides to attack and capture Tribhuvan along with the Prince. This happens and again the lucky Prince is rescued by another damsel Ramani(Ragini), who is daughter of Bhupati. Guess what ? She too loves the Prince. This is not digested by Kireet, a nephew of Bhupat who loves Ramani.

Rajguru Sadanand and Gajapathy attack the fort to rescue Tribhuvan, but get killed along with Tribhuvan by Bhupat.

Now, Bhupat wants to marry Sridevi, but wonder of wonders, her mother Vimala is ready to marry Bhupat. On the day of marriage, Vimala kills Bhupat, Kireet kills Vimala and Prince kills Kireet. Hisab barabar !

In the same mandap(for economic purpose) Prince marries Sridevi and they live happily ever after! THE END.

All the 7 songs in the Hindi film were tune-copies of the Telugu movie. Enjoy this song now….
