Today’s song is a rare Bhajan from the film Jai Hanuman-1948.
A few days back, I got a message from our friend Gajendra Khanna ji, along with this song. He suggested that I write a post on it. This song was given to him long ago by Suman Chaurasia ji who had got it from Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji. When I heard this song, I was very much impressed with its tune, music and melody. Since the song was in MP3 format, I requested Sadanand Kamath ji to upload this song, so that I could use it for my post. However, Sadanand ji found that this song was already posted recently by the Saregama company. He sent me its link.
Despite my ill health, I decided that since this song has reached me after all these obstacles, it looked as if it was God’s wish that I should write about it. Then I sent a message to Harmandir Singh ji to check if he has the booklet of this film and if yes, can he please send me a photocopy of it. He is such a thorough gentleman and a helpful person, within a few hours I got the photocopy on my WA from him ! My thanks to Gajendra ji, Sadanand ji and Harmandir Singh ji for this rare song, uploading link and the film details.
The first decade of the Talkie films, 1931-1940, was that of using the available folk tales, Mythological and Historical stories etc for making films, with exceptions of some offbeat themes. The second decade, 1941-1950, was using unusual social themes, making experiments and a huge number of costume and action/stunt films. It was, however, in the third decade, 1950-1960, that Mythological and musical romantic films ruled the times. As many as 124 Mythological/Religious films were made in these 10 years, giving an average of 1 such film every month for 10 successive years. The beginning of the glory of Mythological/Religious films had actually started from 1948 itself. The year 1948 saw films like Bhakt Bilwamangal, Bhakt Gopalm Bhaiya, Jai hanuman, Raam Baan, Sant Tukaram, Sati Vijay, Satyanarayan, Satyawan Savitri, Seeta Swayamvar and Shri Rambhakt Hanuman – 10 films in 12 months.
Jai Hanuman and Rambhakt Hanuman were both based on Hanuman ji. However, Rambhakt was about Hanuman’s work from Ram vanvas to Ram Rajyabhishek, whereas the film Jai Hanuman was a total life story of Hanuman ji, right from his birth to the end of Ramayan. By coincidence, S.N.Tripathi had acted in both the films. In Rambhakt, he was Hanuman and in Jai Hanuman he was Ravan.
Film Jai Hanuman was made by Ranjit Studios. It was directed by Ramchandra Thakur, who had started from Sagar Movietone. Songs were written by Pt. Indra and the music was composed by Bulo C Rani. The cast was P.Kailash (Shri Ram), Nirupa Roy (Seeta), S.N.Tripathi (Ravan), Vasantrao Pehelwan (Hanuman), Tarabai, Keshav Purohit and a host of many other actors. The story was almost a Bio-Pic of Hanuman ji. The act of holding the Sun in his mouth and closing it created havoc in the Devlok. All Gods failed to convince him. Only when Lord Vishnu ji promised him to meet him in His Ram Avtar and make him an immortal (Chiranjeev), he let the Sun go. These scenes were beautifully shot in the film. The rest of the film depicted his heroics as described in Ramayana like Lanka Dahan, Dronagiri lifting, Patal Lok visit and the meeting with his son Makardhwaj, building Ram setu etc.etc till the end of Ramayana. In the end Ram blesses him and gives him a boon of immortality.
Today’s Bhajan is sung by Master Chander and Chorus. I heard this singer’s name for the first time. I didn’t find his information in any book that I have. I tried for many days to get his information and at last I got his detailed biodata on a Sindhi site on the Internet. Here is his Bio for our readers…..
Master Chander is Legend of Sindhi Music. He was first to sing Kalams and songs related to love in Sindhi Language. Master Chander was born in Tharushah on 7-12-1907. His songs were recorded by HMV records. There must be thousands of songs sung by Master Chander, but hardly 400 songs information is available. He could very easily form the lyrics of the songs and perform a song on that in no time. That is one of the reasons, they were not officially recorded and available publicly.
Master Chander had a passion for music from his childhood. Born in a Zamindar family, where singing was considered a ‘taboo’. Master Chander faced great odds in acquiring a rightful place in the field of music in Sindh. He was not only the most popular singer of HMV, but also a legendary figure, who brought a new singing wave in Sindh. He could truly be called a ‘melody’ that touched the very pulse of man who was lovelorn, distressed & disappointed. His renderings kept the audience spellbound for hours. One of his renderings, ‘Rutha Ee Rahan, Par Hujen Hayati’ (Let them live long even when they are not on good terms)was most popular. He had the knack of keeping his audience, spell bound for hours.
Sangeet Acharya Master Chander, also known as the Legend of Sindh was born on December 7, 1907 in the town of Tharushah, Sindh. He hailed from a merchant and land owner family.
Master Chander was indeed an only child born to his parents from ( Matai Khandan) Zamindar Mr Assandas & Mrs Rami Bai Damwani. He changed his surname to Damwani as his Great Grandfather was Zamindar Damo Mal Matai and Master Chander was the seventh Peedhi(Generation) of the family.
As a child, Master Chander was very fond of music, however, since music was looked down upon in those days, he studied music secretly. But, he was encouraged to study music by his uncle, who also bought him his first harmonium from Calcutta.
One day, Bhagat Kanwar Ram, a great singer himself, saw Master Chander perform and predicted that he would become a great singer in the future. He said that Chander will shine like the moon. It’s said when Master Chander performed that people would throw money, gold and other valuables on stage while he performed.
Master Chander, recorded his first song and hit “Sunhina erza Ahe” in 1932. This song became a phenomenon on the radio- the song was unlike any heard in the early days of radio. It was a mix of classical music and a style his own, of what now we can categorize as an early rendition of Rap and R&B. After his first hit, there was no looking back. His career spanned 50 years.
Like many famous singers of today, who venture into movies, so did Master Chander in the late 1930s. He worked in films including “Dilara”-1934 and “Maut Ka Toofan”-1935, in which he played the hero. He was also cast for “Achhut Kanya” with Devika Rani but was later replaced by Ashok Kumar. Sadly, prior to production of this movie, two of his five sons passed away within months of each other. He was needed at home and thus ended the movie career of Master Chander. But, Master Chander did record seven songs for “Achhut Kanya”.
Master Chander was not only a singer and actor but also a poet and music director, he provided music for his most popular songs. Among his contemporaries were many other singers such as Jeevni Bhai, Allah Rakhi, Bhagat Motan, Bhagat Kanwer Ram, Jaro Bhagat, and Sawami Kundan, however, Chander always had his own style and was ahead of the game.
Master Chander was more famous among the younger generations of that time- you can say his fan following and musical hits reached the heights of Elvis Presley and the Beatles. His songs “Rutha Ee Rahan Par Hujain Hayati”, “Dil Ahey Hathan Mein”, “Rana Vahju Na Ute” and “Kabootar Kabootar” as well as many other songs were very popular not only in Sindh, but all over the world
Beside his own poetry, Chander sang songs written by the great poet Prasram Zia. Master Chander’s music was copied by the music directors of Bollywood. Master Chander was the only singer in the entire history of HMV music who was paid 7% of royalties, others were paid 5%.
In 1947, during the partition of India, Master Chander and the majority of Sindhis were forced to leave their homes and properties in Sindh. He narrowly escaped his own death during those tumultuous days, having sent his family- his pregnant wife, Heti, mother, three sons and three daughters, as well as extended family members ahead in a ship to Bombay, India. Seeing the plight of his people and missing his homeland, he began to write and sing songs about giving confidence to the displaced Sindhis in India, some of the notable songs during this period were “Mitha Abana” from the movie AbanaMovie with well known Sindhi actors and actress, “Kismat Kai Judai” and “Hoshiyar Sindhi”.
After the partition, living in Bombay with his growing family, he continued to record music and sing in films. He also vocally trained his sons Gope and Mahesh Chander. Gope Chander, lives in New York and is a well known singer throughout the United States. Mahesh Chander is also a famous singer, known as the “Man with the Velvet Voice”, he is a music director, who has won many awards, including being recognized for composing the poetry of Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
In 1955, Master Chander was given the rare opportunity to give a concert in Sindh, and he did so along with his son Gope Chander. There they were warmly welcomed by the people of Sindh and Pakistan. After his return to India, he never visited Sind again, but gave concerts all over the world during the 1960s and early 1970s.
On 3rd November, 1984, the music stopped and Master Chander left behind a lifetime of music, songs and his family to become “The Legend of Sindh”.
In the mid-1990s, in honor of Master Chander, his family created the Master Chander Sangeet Academy in New York, USA and Bombay, India. Every year in either December or January, a concert in the memory and birth of Master Chander is held in New York, Bombay, Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Ulhasnagar.
The music continues with Master Chander’s sons- Gope Chander and Mahesh Chander, grandchildren- Arti Raj Chander, Harish Chander and Anil Chander. The music will forever continue with future generations from his family and beyond.
Apart from being a great singer, musician & poet, Master Chander was also a great Author who wrote this book during his lifetime.

The name of P.Kailash who had worked as a Hero in the past, may be a matter of surprise for some readers. For a long time, I was very curious about this actor. One day I was reading a book ” Asli Nakli Chehre ” ( असली नकली चेहरे ) by Vithal Pandya. In this book, he has given information about P.Kailash, who did the main role in the film ” Jai Hanuman-48″, for which Pandya was an assistant Director. Vithal Pandya had spent over 30 years in the film industry from the 30s and 40s. He worked with many directors and in many banners. He wrote 2 books in Gujarati/Hindi, which are highly informative with first hand knowledge. For example, he mentions that S N Tripathi, the Music Director was also an actor and was famous in the role of Hanuman in all Wadia movies. However in the film-Jai Hanuman-48, he played the role of Ravan. Anyway, based on information in this book coupled with an article by M N Sardana ji, on Facebook page ‘Woh din yaad karo’ about P.Kailash, here is some information on P.Kailash for our readers, first time. My thanks to both of them.
Mr P Kailash (Pandit Kailash Chandra Sharma), was born on 03 February 1924 at Multai, a small town in District Betul ( Madhya Pradesh). After doing H.S.C., he did a stint of teaching in Akola. Bestowed with sharp features, and deep voice ,fair coloured P Kailash came to Bombay in 1946 to become an actor. He did not have to wait for a long time to have an entry in the film line .
Seth Chandulal Shah gave him a chance in his mythological movie Jai Hanuman ,as the hero opposite Nirupa Roy. The movie, made under the banner of Ranjit Movietone, was directed by Ramchandra Thaku . Thereafter, Mr Kailash appeared in many mythological, fantasy and historical movies like Veer Durga Das, Sati Anusuiya, Maha Bharat, Prabhu Ki Mahima, Veer Arjun, Gopal Krishna , Nadir Shah, Thief Of Baghdad, Hercules, Aab E Hayat, Gul E Bakawali etc . In 1953 ,he performed as a cop in Ranjit Movietone’s Papi ,along with Raj Kapoor. With Dilip Kumar, he did a role which had comic shades in Leader. Shirin Farhad, made by veteran filmmaker Aspi Irani, was another movie in which his performance was much appreciated .
Mr P Kailash appeared in numerous movies made by Filmmakers like Shree Ram Bohra ,B K Adarsh and Filmistan . Maine Jeena Seekh Liya, Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain ,Picnic ,Baba Sari Ladli (Rajasthani) ,Jekra Charnwa Mein Lagle Pranwa (Bhoj Puri), Love and Murder ,were the movies, Mr P Kailash did for the said film makers. Versatile director Krishan Chopra (May God Bless His Soul) ,who died before completing his second movie ,gave him a lifetime role of a tyrannical landlord in Heera Moti which was based upon the heart warming story Do Bailon Ki Katha, written by great writer Prem Chand. He brought alive the arrogant and heartless Zamindaar on the screen with his dynamic performance .
Krishan Chopra, impressed with the magnificent personality of Mr P Kailash, gave him an important role in his next movie Gaban ,which was completed by Hrishkesh Mukherjee ,after Mr Chopra passed away untimely. It was a sad coincidence that Mr P Kailash ,also did not live long .While on a visit to his birth place Multai, he suffered a massive heart attack and left for his heavenly abode on 23 May 1967. Payal Ki Jhankaar, made by Filmistan and Thief of Baghdad by Mr Shree Ram Bohra were released later, after he had gone forever at the young age of 43 years, leaving his two daughters, one son and wife. P.Kailash acted in 43 films. His first film was Jai Hanuman-48 and the last released film was Irada-1971.
With today’s Bhajan, Master Chander makes his Debut as a singer on this Blog. The bhajan is extremely melodious and I rate it as one of the best songs composed by Bulo C Rani. I enjoyed it immensely. Now you can enjoy….
