Today’s song is from the film Aabshar-1953.

For a long time, I just wondered as to what was the meaning of this word Aabshar. Then I looked into an Urdu-English dictionary and found out that it means’ Waterfall’ or “things coming all at a time” or ‘a Cascade’. Obviously, it was about the film’s story. This was a social film. The story revolved around a good looking simple village girl-Nimmi and a young, rich, city educated man Rajkumar, who falls in love with her during one of his visits to his hometown. The brother of the girl-Tiwari, is against this affair as he has already consented to the love of his friend for his sister. However Nimmi hates him. To add to all this, there is a murder in the village, for which the Hero is held responsible. Of course, all is well, at the end of the movie the real culprit is found to be the girl’s brother only. All is well, before the words ‘ The End ” appear on the screen, to the relief of the audience.

AABSHAAR-1953 was a Globe Picture film. It was produced and directed by Hasrat Lucknowi who was essentially a writer. He used to write story, Dialogues, Screenplays and even wrote lyrics in some films. He has about 20 films to his credit in different capacities, but this is the only film where he was Producer/Director. He wrote songs for the films like Muslim ka lal-41, Jhankaar-42, Kalyug-42,Society-42, Aabroo, Bhalai-43, Salma-43, Aap Beeti-48, Kaneez-49, Nisbat-49, Thes-49, Sim Sim Marjina-58 etc etc.

When the film’s shooting started, Ghulam Haider was the composer. He recorded 3 songs of Pakistani singer Munawar Sultana. After migrating to Pakistan in 1947, Ghula Haider used to come to India to compose music for films, and at the same time, he would compose for Pakistani films too. However, his films like Shahida-49, Beqasoor-50,Akeli-51 and Bheegi Palken-52 were all flops.
While doing music of Aabshaar in India, he was also doing the film Gulnar of Pakistan. Meanwhile his health worsened and he abandoned the film Aabshaar and left for Pakistan to complete Gulnar. Film Gulnar was released on 2-11-1953 and Ghulam Haider died on 9-11-1953 !

After he left, the film was given to Bhola Shreshtha and Mohd. Shafi. Bhola composed 3 songs and Shafi did 2 songs, which included one Kishore song. His other song was by Asha Bhosle. Besides all this jhamela in Music, film Aabshaar – 1953 earned a place in Hindi Film History, for being the First ever film to start the system of ” Guest artistes”, mentioned in credits. Film Aabshaar had the cast of Nimmi, Raaj Kumar, Lalita Pawar, Kuldip Kaur, Iftikhar, Tiwari and others. It had Guest artistes- Ashok Kumar, Shyama, Om Prakash and Nigar Sultana. The film was released in Minerva Theatre – Bombay, on 2-10-1953.

Although Hasrat Lucknowi, the producer/director of this film was a writer and lyricist himself, he did not write any song for this film. There were 3 other lyricists namely, Sarshar Sailani (real name Bhim Sen), Wahid Qureshi and Qateel Shifai.

The less known Qateel Shifai, the lyricist and a writer of film stories and dialogues was born on 24-12-1919, in Haripur village of Hazara district-Punjab (now in Pakistan). His real name was Aurangzeb Khan. He changed his name to Qateel Shifai, Qateel being his takhallus and Shifai was to honour his Ustad- hakeem Mohammed Shifa. His father’s sudden death stopped his school education, but he started writing Urdu poems which were published in Lahore’s paper ‘STAR’, edited by Qamar Jalalabadi.

For sustenance, he started a sports goods shop but it was not successful. Then he joined service in a transport company at Rs. 60 p.m. In 1946, he joined as a joint editor in a local newspaper. His first song was used in the film “Teri yaad mein”-1947. After that he was one of the most successful writer and songwriter in Pakistani films till 1975.

Some of his songs became famous in Indian films. His first song was in today’s film Aabshar-1953. One of his famous ghazals ” Ulfat ki nayee manzil ko chala” sung by Nurjahan was very popular. It was used in 2 Indian films also – Ulfat-1978 sung by Yesudas and Kamsutra-a tale of Love-1998, sung by Shobha Gurtu. His other songs were used in Indian films in the 80’s and the 90’s. Many of his private songs also were sung by leading singers of India in many albums. These singers were Lata, Asha, pankaj udhas, mehdi Hasan Ghulam Ali, Pinaz Masani, Bhupendra etc. His poems and gazals are translated in Hindi, Gujarati, English, Russian, Chinese languages also.

He got several top awards in Pakistan and india. A street is named after him in his Hometown-Haripur and also in Lahore. He wrote about 40 songs in about 20 Indian films. He died on 21-7-2001. ( some information from the book Filmi Geetkar by Anil Bhargav ji is used in this note, along with my notes.)

What was the film scene in 1953 ? 2 films that impressed the audience were by Bimal Roy. One was Parineeta. It was a classic film based on the famous novel by Sharat Chandra Chatterjee. ” Do Bigha Zameen’ , based on a short story by Salil Chaudhari was a hit film nationally and internationally. Bimal, greatly influenced by the ‘ Nehru Socialism’ and the” Italian New Wave Films” , made this film showing the pathetic story of a poor land owner of Bihar, coming to a big city like Calcutta and becoming a Rickshaw Puller, with an unrealistic hope of making enough money to get back his mortgaged piece of land. This touching story won several awards, but one American film critic wrote ” It is very strange that a filmmaker from a newly independent nation of India has such a negative picture of his own country ! How will it motivate people to be successful in life ? ”

On the positive side, there was the musical Anarkali , the biggest Hit of 1953. When the film Mughal e Azam, a film on the same story, was released in 1960, film Anarkali was also re-released and it did a very good business. Raj kapoor’s Aah was good but the audience did not like Raj Kapoor’s ‘Dilip Kumar style’ acting as well as Pran doing the role of a good gentleman doctor, instead of his usual villain style acting. However, the songs became popular.

Other notable films wereBoot polish, Patita, Shikast, Aas, Jeewan Jyoti, Raahi, Foot path, Jhamela, AVM’s Ladki etc. Film Mayur pankh introduced Asha Mathur and some foreign artistes. Nehru’s favourite slogan ‘Vividhata mein Ekta’ was used as a theme in the film Teen batti Char Rasta, by V.Shantaram. He also presented the socialist theme of ‘ Rich-poor’ struggle in the film Surang. First Geva colour film Shahenshah was brought by G.P.Sippy.

Guru Dutt and O.P.Nayyar came together for the first time in filmBaaz. The National Film Awards started and the first award went to marathi film ” Shyamchi Aai “, made by P.K.Atre starring Vanmala. Filmfare awards also started. Prabhat film company closed down. Music Director Ghulam Haider died in Pakistan.

Today’s song is the last and final song of this film. Thus film Aabshar-1953 is YIPPEED !
