Today, 30th June 2024, is the 96th Birth Anniversary of Kalyanji Veerji Shah or Kalyanji Bhai. This post is my Shradhanjali to this supremely talented composer.

Kalyanji Veerji Shah was born on 30 June 1928 in Kundrodi, Kutch, Gujarat, India. His father’s family migrated from Kutch to Mumbai to start a Kirana (provision store). His youngest brother and his wife are the husband and wife duo Babla & Kanchan, who created the chutney songs made famous in the Caribbean.

He and his brothers began to learn music from a music teacher, who actually knew no music but taught them in lieu of paying his bills to their father. One of their four grandparents was a folk musician of some eminence. They spent most of their formative years in the South Mumbai suburb of Girgaum amidst Marathi and Gujarati environs — some eminent musical talent resided in the vicinity. Kalyanji’s son, Viju Shah, is also a music composer in the Hindi Film Industry.

Kalyanji started his career as a musician, with a new electronic instrument called the clavioline, which he used to create the famous “Nagin Been,” used in the film Nagin (1954) which had the music of Hemant Kumar. Kalyanji then, with his brother Anandji, started an orchestral group called Kalyanji Virji and Party which organised musical shows in Mumbai and outside.

Kalyanji Anandji’s arrival in the Bombay film industry as music composers was a turning point. The Bharat Bhushan – Nirupa Roy hit Samrat Chandragupta(1958) was his first film as Kalyanji Virji Shah. Songs like Chahe Paas Ho (Lata–Rafi) that are remembered to this day were what made the movie a commercial success. This was followed by his composing music scores for more films like Post Box 999 before Anandji who was assisting him, joined him officially to form the Kalyanji-Anandji duo in Satta Bazaar and Madari (1959). Chhalia (1960) was their earliest major hit. In 1965, two decisive scores, Himalay Ki God Mein and Jab Jab Phool Khile, established them as composers to reckon with.

Both Kalyanji and Anandji worked as music composers for over 250 films, 17 of which were golden jubilees and 39 silver jubilees. They organised many charitable concerts for NGOs and several charitable institutions in India and abroad with some of the biggest names in Bollywood.

The KA team won the 1975 Filmfare Award for Best Music Director, for Kora Kagaz. Kalyanji Bhai received the Padma Shri in 1992.

The KA team worked till “Ulfat Ki Nayee Manzilen” released in 1994. Kalyanji Veerji Shah died on 24 August 2000 in India.

Your’s truly had the privilege and the honour of meeting Anandji Bhai in September 2013 and discussing the KA partnership, their music and their lives as the composer duo as well as their personal life.

Coming to today’s song, it is from the film Kashmakash released in 1973.

Kashmakash was directed by Feroze Chinoy for producer Seeroo Daryanani and starred Feroz Khan, Rekha, Shatrughan Sinha, Asha Sachdev, along with Ranjeet, Rehman, I. S. Johar, Padma Khanna, etc.. It was loosely based on James Hadley Chase’s novel Tiger by the Tail.

I remember an incident about this movie. 1973 was the year when I started my teen years and was in 7th grade/standard in school. Its the year in which I must have seen at least 3 movies per week, most of them by bunking the school.

One day, me and my friend Prashant, bunked the school and went to see this movie although it was with an “A” (Adult) certificate. In the interval we heard a familiar voice behind us – How’s the movie boys? It was our Hindi teacher, Mr. Pathak. You can imagine our surprise and fright. We were then treated to some real good corporal punishment from our Rector (Principal).

Coming to the movie and its plot/story – (Warning – Spoilers Ahead)!!

Satish Gupt and Seeta are a happily married couple till one day, on the insistence of his friend ManMohan, Satish visits Sapna for an illicit rendezvous at her hotel where she performs as a cabaret artist, and there he sees her in her bathtub, from wherein she leads him to her bed. Before anything can happen, Sapna is ruthlessly murdered in the dark with a knife. Satish rushes out of her room, but is caught red handed on the stairs, by a private detective I. S. Johar, who plays himself in the movie, and who keeps tabs on influential people to nab their illicit dealings to blackmail them. He always carries his pet white Pomeranian dog with him as his signature at the places he investigates along with the police, but unlike the police, he works for the sleazy underworld being run by Rana (Rehman).

The other love angle is of Ritu, Satish’s sister, who introduces her beau Inspector Sinha to him on the next morning of the sleazy murder, which makes headlines in all the newspapers, Sapna being known internationally as a performer, which makes things all the more difficult for Satish, whose suit is also splattered with Sapna’s blood. I. S. Johar, now with Inspector (Asit Sen), along with CID Inspector Sinha, start keeping tabs on Satish, all for their own motives. The suspense builds up as also the agony of Satish, who due to this misadventure is also unable to perform with his loving wife Seeta, which is the underlying theme of the movie as to how guilt can destroy a marriage.

After a series of debacles, Inspector Sinha decides to collude with Satish on solving the murder mystery along with Seeta, to whom Satish confesses his guilt, and makes them play out the same night as was done on the night of the murder, in the same bed and in the same hotel. Here emerges Johny who was the estranged lover of Sapna, and who is being masterminded by none other than I. S. Johar, who turns out to be under the command of Rana, who in turn is about to marry Johny’s sister and stand for elections in a garb of respectability. Before this interlude, Sinha has already come to know the post-mortem Autopsy details of Sapna, which revealed that she was two months pregnant, and after investigation has come to know that Johnny was in jail till a day before the murder. I. S. Johar, after removing a picture, Psycho style, enters the room and tries to kill the woman with Satish, thinking of implicating him again, but manages to only stab a pillow. He is caught by the police, but manages to escape. Rana is nailed for conspiracy, but before anything can be done, he is killed in an exchange of gunshots between him and I. S. Johar.

After a chase of cars and kidnapping of Seeta, I. S. Johar is shot by Inspector Sinha, and thus his car lands below a cliff, which kills him. Satish and Seeta are cleared of guilt and Inspector Sinha marries Ritu.

Today’s song “Jitna Zaroori Man Ka Milan” Is sung by Kishore Kumar and Rekha. The song is penned by Indeevar and composed by Kalyanji Anandji. On screen, lip syncing are Feroz Khan and Rekha.

I hope you all will love this once famous song.

Lyrics

Jitna Zaroori Mann Ka Milan
Tan Ka Milan Utna Hi Zaroori
Jitna Zaroori Mann Ka Milan
Um hmmm
Tan Ka Milan Utna Hi Zaroori
Ik Pal Juda Na Rehna
Kyun Kya Ho Jayega
hahaha

Ik Pal Juda Na Rehna
Mushkil Judaai Sehna
Kadam Behak Jaayen
Itni Bhi
Thheek Nahin Doorie
Jitna Zaroori Mann Ka Milan
Um hmmm
Tan Ka Milan Utna Hi Zaroori

Tum Hi Tum Samaaye Ho Meri
Nas Nas Mein
Hmmm
Hoke Door Rahega Na Dil Ye Mera
Mere Bas Main
Ja Ja
Bandh Gayi Tumse Dori
Aur Tumhi Meri Kamzori ee
Bandh Gayi Tumse Dori
Aur Tumhi Meri Kamzori
Aise Na Tarsao
Pyas Karo Poori ee
Jitna Zaroori Mann Ka Milan
Um hmmm
Tan Ka Milan Utna Hi Zaroori

Sur Bina Hai Yeh Naghma
Adhoora Adhoora
Kaise
Do Badan Mile Jab Tabhi
Pyar Hota Hai Pura
Chal Hat
Kuch Bhi Nahin Main Tuhj Bin
Kuch Bhi Nahin Tu Mujh Bin
Kuch Bhi Nahin Main Tuhj Bin
Kuch Bhi Nahin Tu Mujh Bin
Aise Na Tarsao
Pyaas Karo Poori

Jitna Zaroori Mann Ka Milan
Tan Ka Milan Utna Hi Zaroori

Nice post Satyajit ji. Your mentioning Kundrodi reminds me of my days in Kachchh. Kundrodi a small village is near Gundala on the way from Mundra to Gandhidham. While traveling in Kachchh I passed through this small village one or twice I think. I was told that Anandji still visits there once in year or so.

Thanks for this post on Kalyanji Bhai. Vividh Bharati played many K-A songs yesterday in various programs.

Also, thanks for the story of this movie. With the given star cast it seems to be an interesting movie.

Our tributes to the great music created by K-A.

Regards,

Thank you Avinash Ji!!

In fact, Anandji Bhai himself mentioned Kundrodi a couple of times during our tête-à-tête at his house in Mumbai in September 2013.

The entire family is quite attached to the town.
