Today’s song is from a one time famous and honoured film from the Prabhat Films – Amar Jyoti-1936.

This is one of those films which tried something new through a story – a story of a lady rebel who became a Sea Pirate. Right from the silent era first film in 1913 till 1936, it was something daring for a film story. It was the first of its type.Later on also, for whatever unknown reasons, very few films were made on pirates. When Prabhat decided on this story, the big question was who to be chosen for the main role. Durga khote’s name was finalised as she looked suitable for the role of a desperate yet kind and strong yet lovable character of the woman pirate.

The story and screenplay was written by K.Narayan Kale, who also acted in the film.He was an actor, Screenplay writer, a Director and a radical journalist. He was a Law graduate. K.Narayan Kale (Keshav Narayan Kale), was born on 24-2-1904 in Khed district of Maharashtra. After his graduation in Arts he became a radical Journalist and to give expression to his ideology joined films, as an actor,Director and writer. He acted in major films like Amar Jyoti,Dharmatma,Parakh, for which he wrote the story and s/play also.

In 1931, he became the Editor of two Marathi magazines (Ratnakar and Pratibha). He was also active on stage dramas for Natya Manvantar. He joined Prabhat as a writer and Lyricist, but soon left to complete his Law Graduation.

He returned to films to direct Hindi film Wahan-37 and Mera Ladka-38 (माझा मुलगा in Marathi). He then joined Navyug films and directed two Marathi films- Lapandav-40 and Baeelveda-43. In between he also directed one more Marathi film Municipality-41.

He left films again and wrote several books on Stage Techniques. He continued writing and editing Marathi magazines. He returned to films again to direct Marathi film Ammaldar-50 and Hindi film Didi-1959.

He acted in 13 films,Directed 7 films and wrote for 3 films, starting with Prabhat’s Wahan, which he also directed. He died on 20-2-1974 at Bombay.

Dialogues and lyrics were by Pt. Narottam Vyas. All the songs of AMAR JYOTI were written by Pt.Narotham Vyas.Since there were no records issued for all songs, the name of the lyricist is not mentioned. Pt.Narotham Vyas is a name, many readers may not have even heard as a Lyricist. He was born in Moradabad-U.P..He was an expert writer of Religious songs in chaste Hindi. His tradition was carried forward in later days by Bharat Vyas,Saraswati Kumar Deepak,G.S.Nepali and others of the same ilk.

He started writing film songs with SEETA-34. In this film he had written 15 songs.K.C.Dey was the composer. Then came Jung bahadur,Shadi ki Raat,Dilawar, jagran etc.V.Shantaram spotted him and took him for Prabhat films, like Dharmatma, Amar jyoti,Rajput Ramani, Wahaan etc.

He wrote 225 songs in only 20 films. This high average was due to the large number of songs in films those days-like Shadi ki Raat-35 songs,Sri Ramanuj-17 songs,Dharmatma-16,Seeta-15,Mamaji and Mahatma Vidur-13 each.
He also directed 2 films-Sunehre Baal-38 and Bhiyya Dooj-43.

The other actors in the film were Shanta Apte, B.Nandrekar, Chandramohan, Gajendra, Vasanti, Vasant Desai, K.N.Kale and many others. The film had the main theme of a woman pirate, but it also showed a love story entwined into the main story. The story of the film was…..

Saudamini (Durga Khote) is denied custody of her son by the Queen (Karuna Devi) and Durjaya, the tyrannical Minister of Justice (Chandra Mohan) after she separates from her husband. Durjaya tells her that a woman is the slave of her husband and essentially has no rights. This enrages Saudamini and she vows vengeance and becomes a pirate. She and her pirates capture a ship which is supposed to be carrying the princess Nandini (Shanta Apte). However, she finds her old enemy Durjaya and takes him prisoner, cutting off one of his legs. Nandini has been hiding in chest, and when she comes out of it, the imprisoned Durjaya sees her. He falls in love with her and offers her his food. Nandini however falls in love with a young shepherd boy Sudhir (Nandrekar). When she meets Saudamini and her helper Rekha (Vasanti) she joins them as a pirate and tells Sudhir off. Durjaya escapes with the help of Sudhir and arrives to arrest Saudamini. Saudamini is captured, but the others, along with Nandini and Rekha, escape. It is finally revealed that Sudhir is Saudamini’s long-lost son. Nandini and Sudhir marry and Rekha carries forward Saudamini’s legacy.

This outstanding adventure film – the first pirate film in Hindi – was the first Indian film to be screened at the Venice Film Festival. The film became a box office hit because of three reasons. One – Durga Khote’s excellent acting, two – the special effects and the novel, unusual pirate story and three – its popular songs and music.

Durga Khote, in her Autobiography, ‘I, Durga Khote’ has stated the following about this film,

“A film like Amarjyoti, an imaginary story and beautiful in every respect, happens only once in a rare while. The cinematography, sets, costumes, jewellery, songs, and backgrounds were so perfectly attuned, that the audience went crazy with every scene. Every element, whether it was shots of ships, surging waves and enormous rocks, or the casting and performances with minute shades of expression, heroism, self-sacrifice, and extreme tyranny—was striking in itself, and in complete harmony with every other element of the complicated plot. Shanta Apte’s songs became very popular. Vasanti’s lovable charm, the harsh anger that I, as Saudamini, expressed against injustice, Chandramohan’s impressive performance, light eyes flashing—were all wonderfully effective. The costumes of the smugglers, their lifestyle, the weapons they carried, were all imaginary, and yet they came through so convincingly on screen. Every costume was so precisely selected that it fitted in its place perfectly, as if carved for that space.”

The film’s Music Director was Master Krishnarao (Phulambrikar). There was another actor, singer, Music Director Master Krishnarao (Chonkar), who was the father of dancer actress Nalini Chonkar. They were two different persons addressed as Master Krishnarao. This was a case of “Same Name Confusion”.

Today’s song is sung by Vasanti, who did only child roles. She left films when she got married. This song is a video song. Enjoy this 88 year old video song….

Lyrics

ye jogan khojan nikri hai
jogan khojan nikri hai
nisdin tadapti phiri hai
nisdin tadapti phiri hai
jogan khojan nikri hai
jogan khojan nikri hai

sab haatbaat goonje
sab haatbaat goonje
ban kunj ghaat goonje
ban kunj ghaat goonje
tan man ki sudh bisri hai
tan man ki sudh bisri hai
jogan khojan nikri hai

ye jogan khojan nikri hai
chhip baithhe woh kit jaakar
chhip baithhe woh kit jaakar
pyaare giridhaari
pyaare giridhaari
hum par vipdaa padi hai
hum par vipdaa padi hai
jogan khojan nikri hai
jogan khojan nikri hai
