(12th Remembrance Anniversary Day of Rajesh Khanna – 18th July’2024)
Today on the occasion of actor Rajesh Khanna’s 12th Remembrance Anniversary we pay our tributes to him by posting songs from the movies he acted in.
In this post I am presenting a song from the ‘1990’ movie ‘Swarg’. Trying to recollect now, I think this was the last movie of Rajesh Khanna which I watched in the theatres. I was staying at Kota (Rajasthan), and we had watched this movie on a holiday with colleagues from the company I was working in. Later on, as I progressed in my professional career, I had to shift to Bareilly (UP) where I stayed from 1999 to 2004. During this period the movie ‘Aa Ab Laut Chalen 1999’ was released, but I do not remember why I failed to watched it at that time. Subsequently I watched some movies of Rajesh Khanna on TV or on various channels. The latest Rajesh Khanna movies (for me) that I watched a few months ago were ‘Ajnabi-1974’ and ‘Amar Prem-1971’.
“Swarg-1990” was directed by David Dhawan for ‘Paras Films International’. It was produced by Nandu G Tolani. This movie fared well at the box office and Rajesh Khanna’s role was also appreciated well and in this movie he dies (in his ‘style’) in the end of this movie.
“Swarg-1990” had Rajesh Khanna, Govinda, Maadhavi, Juhi Chawla, supported by Dilip Dhawan, Raja Bundela, Neena Gupta, Mahesh Anand, Vikas Anand, Bhagwan, Arun Bakshi, Jaspal Sandhu, Yunus Parvez, Shahnaaz, Anjana, Darshan, Bharat Bhushan, Liliput, Mustaq Merchant, Pardesi, Varoon, Mukesh Thakur, Dhruv, Shashi Kiran, with Satish Kaushik, Bharat Kapoor, and Paresh Rawal. Om Shivpuri had a special appearance in this movie. This movie was written by Anees Bazmee and the director Nandu G. Tolani. Editing of this movie was done by David Dhawan who was also the director of this movie. This movie had five songs written by Sameer and the music director duo Anand Milind composed music for this movie. Anuradha Paudwal, Amit Kumar, Mohd Aziz, Anupama Deshpande and Nitin Mukesh were the singers for the songs in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 02.05.1990.
Filmgoers would be aware that this movie was based on the movie ‘Meharbaan-1967’ wherein Ashok Kumar and Sunil Dutt played the role that Rajesh Khanna and Govinda played respectively in the movie ‘Swarg-1990’. While presenting a song from the movie ‘Meharbaan-1967’ on the blog our team member Peevesie’s Mom ji had mentioned the following details about the story of this movie. Similar information is mentioned on sources like ‘Wikipedia’ etc.
“Swarg’ was said to be a remake of ‘Meharbaan’ which itself was a remake from the 1960 Tamil hit ‘Padikkadha Medhai’ (Uneducated Genius) which in turn was a remake of the 1953 Bengali movie ‘Jog Biyog’ which was based on the novel of the same name by Ashapurna Devi. So, that means this story will hold good in any time and age.”
In brief it is the story of a wealthy business man whose brothers betray him for property and loose everything they had. In all the adversities his wife and sister remained with him and there is his loyal servant whom he had thrown of the house because of his brothers and their wives. But the servant, on knowing his master’s condition, comes back to his rescue and brings back all the wealth. In the end the family members ask the business man to forgive them which he reluctantly agreed to remembering the promise he had given to his mother. However he suffers a major heart attack. He had already made up his mind to leave this world, so he removes medicines from the bottle and keeps empty bottle with him so that he cannot be saved this time.
The song in this post is a sad song which happens when the master is missing his servant- who was – his ‘friend’, ‘hamdard’ and ‘hamsaaya’. Rajesh Khanna lip syncs the song in the voice of Mohd Aziz. Lyrics are by Sameer and music is composed by Anand-Milind.
With this song this movie ‘Swarg-1990’ make its debut on the blog.

Lyrics
ae mere dost
laut ke aajaa aa
bin tere zindagi
adhoori hai ae
ae mere dost
laut ke aajaa aa
bin tere zindagi
adhoori hai ae
aa ke to dekh
meree haalat ko
bin tere har khushi

mera hamsaaya aa
tu meri zindagi mein
aaya thhaa
ban ke hamdard
mera hamsaaya
tu meri zindagi mein
aaya thhaa
pyaar apnon se bhi zyaadaa
kiya mujhe toone
log kehte hain
tu paraaya thha
log kehte hain
tu paraaya thha
ae mere dost
laut ke aajaa aa
bin tere zindagi
adhoori hai ae
ae mere dost
laut ke aajaa
mere dil se
yahi duaa nikley
tu jahaan bhi rahe
khush-haal rahe
mere dil se
yahi duaa nikley
tu jahaan bhi rahe
khush-haal rahe
bhool ke bhi naa
bhulaa paaun
main tujhe hamdam
har ghadi bas
tera khayaal rahe
har ghadi bas
tera khayaal rahe
ae mere dost
laut ke aajaa aa
bin tere zindagi
adhoori hai
ae mere dost
laut ke aajaa
