Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 13

‘1983’ to ‘1988’ was the ‘peak time’ for me for watching Rajesh Khanna movies. From ‘1983-1985’ I was studying (? 🙂 ) in 11th-12th standard and staying at Akola with my grandparents. There was our group of friends who shared common interests of cricket and Kaka. Couple of my friends in this group were bigger fans of Kaka than me.Following the success of ‘Avtaar’ and ‘Souten’, earlier movies of Rajesh Khanna were also re released in theatres, and we used to watch them in theatres.
On the other hand there were video parlors in the city where some movie were getting screened. I was grabbing every opportunity of watching these movies as much possible. DD National also telecast movies like ‘Maalik’, ‘Dil Daulat Duniya’ etc then.
I would eagerly look forward to every new release of a Kaka movie. One of such most anticipated movie for me was ‘Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai-1984’. After all it was coming from director Sohanlal Kanwar under the banner of ‘Filmnagar’.
Sohanlal Kanwar’s name was associated with movies like ‘Pehchaan’, ‘Be-imaan’, ‘Sanyaasi’ etc and he had also produced the movie ‘Dhanwaan-1981’ in which Rajesh Khanna had given a stellar performance. So I was quite enthusiastic for the upcoming movie ‘Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai’. Also it had music by ‘Shankar-Jaikishan’ (Music Director Shankar now giving music with this name), and that was another reason I was excited about this movie.
It was passed by Censor Board on 19.04.1984. I remember to have watched it at Akola and as usual for me I watched it twice. In spite of good opening in the first week this movie didn’t fare well at the Box office. Anyway, it was a nice movie and as fans of Rajesh Khanna we enjoyed it and like his performance.
“Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai-1984” had an impressive cast viz Rajesh Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Rati Agnihotri, Jayaprada, Tina Munim, Kanwaljeet, Om Shivpuri, Bharat Kapoor, Mazhar Khan, Roopesh Kumar, Pinchoo Kapoor, Ajit Kumar, Nalin Dave, Meera, Sarla Yevlekar, Asha Potdar, Amarnath, Asha Sharma, Zenobia, Master Nadeem, Baby Shabana, Uttam Sodhi, Chandan, Seema, Harendra, Birbal, S.N. Tripathi, Kamaldeep, Murad, Brahma Bharadwaj, Chand Usmani, Harjeet, Shaikh, Vyas, Yasmeen, Rajan Haksar, Kartik, Kishin Singloo and others.
“Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai-1984” has as many as seven songs which were written by Hasrat Jaipuri(one song), M.G. Hashmat(two songs), Vishveshwar Sharma(two songs), and Prabha Thakur ( two songs). The seven songs include one two-part song which is the song being presented today.
Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Sharda, Prabha Thakur, Suresh Wadkar, Asha Bhonsle, and Anuradha Paudwal were the singers for the songs in this movie.
“Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai-1984” had a ‘robin hood’ cum revenge drama kind of storyline where Rajesh Khanna played the lead character. I have now come across sources which mention that Sohanlal Kanwar had initially planned this movie in ‘1976’ with Manoj Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha. But Manoj Kumar left the movie due to some problems and so Rajesh Khanna was given the role which was originally supposed to be played by Manoj Kumar. Similarly Shatrughan Sinha and Kanwaljeet were given roles that were to be played originally by Rajesh Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha respectively.
The song under discussion is a ‘road-side tamaasha’ category song where Rajesh Khanna plays the ‘madaari’ and Jayaprada as his ‘jamooran’. This is a nice song where the lyrics deal with the topic contained in the title viz “paapi pet”. Part of the lyrics seeks to put the blame of inequality in the society on the rich people. Lyrics are written by Vishveshwar Sharma. This song also falls in the category of ‘theme song’ and ‘title song’. I do not remember much about this movie now, but when I first watched this song , I was reminded of Kaka’s performance in the song ‘duniyaa mein rehnaa to kaam kar pyaare’ from ‘Haathhi Mere Saathi-1971’. In many of his later movies in his second innings, he tried to turn the clock back to his ‘hey-days’ but given his physique some of his later roles did not go down well with the audiences. Had he continued with mature roles that suited his age and appearance instead of trying to ape his mannerisms of his prime years, he could have met with better results at the box office.
Let us now enjoy the song under discussion which is our tribute to Kaka (29.12.1942-18.07.2012) on his ‘twelfth remembrance’ day today.
With this song the movie ‘Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai-1984’ makes its debut on the blog. The song is picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Jayaprada who lip sync in the voices of Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar respectively. The song is picturised as a “madaari” song, and so naturally we have a crowd also who are watching this ‘madaari ka khel”.
