Remembering Mukesh on his birthday, today 22 July.
As most of my posts feature Mukesh, many of my views on his songs could sound cliches. But then there is so much to write on his voice as words fail every time an attempt is made. There are songs on various aspects, emotions and circumstances one faces in life. I could stick my neck out and say that even many of his sad songs bring joyful solace to the heart. For, the voice sans the music and even the literal meaning of the lyrics feels as if a divine entity is trying to convey the many facets of life.
Last year, we had the centenary year of his birth and celebrated it on the blog with post-a-day for more than a week. Quite a few relatively less heard songs were brought to the fore.
For today’s song, I herewith bring my own experience on one of the films which featured songs of Mukesh.
“Mukesh; Chori Chori mein.”
Decades back, during the radio days, this announcement on Radio Ceylon baffled me for a long time. It was an era when there was no access to internet and other sources to verify. For all I knew, Mukesh had not sung in Chori Chori (1956) even though Raj Kapoor featured in it. The reasons for this have been explained at other places on the blog regarding the Contract that Mukesh had signed in which he was not allowed to offer playback till its expiry.
This predicament of Mukesh featuring in the film Chori Chori remained with me for several years. Sometimes, I felt it could an error by the announcers. But the announcement unmistakenly persisted several times. Also, the three glorious duets of Manna Dey and Lata in Chori Chori (1956) are my personal favourites and I always wondered how they would sound with Mukesh and Lata.
Not sure of the facts, I did what best I could do at that time. To note it down in my book containing such information and doubts. I have dozens and dozens of such notes jotted down. Of late, however many of them are no longer puzzles including the one under discussion.
Much later when listening pleasure was coupled with tracing information about songs did I come to know that Mukesh indeed sang for Chori Chori albeit for another film of same title released in 1973. There was no Raj Kapoor in this film, but incidentally Shankar Jaikishan were the composers. Thus, a self-created conundrum was solved, and I heaved a sigh of relief.
Chori Chori (1973) was produced and directed by Kewal P. Kashyap and had nothing to do with its namesake film of 1956 except for the composers.
The cast was led by Sanjay Khan and Radha Saluja supported by a host of other actors and a few in supporting roles. All lyrics were written by Gulshan Bawra.
Mukesh has 2 solos and a duet with Suman Kalayanpur in this film. One solo picturized on Shashi Kapoor has already been covered on the blog.
On the occasion of Mukesh’s birthday, I present this second solo from the film. Not a very good song by Mukesh standards, but as we reach posting all his songs on the blog, the magic of Mukesh may be missing for some of his songs. However, what is important is we try to cover every single bit of byte in the voice of Mukesh on the blog.
Wishing the golden voice of the golden era in HFM, a very happy birthday.

Lyrics
tore jaisi chhori hoti koi gaanv maa hamaar
to sahar ham naahin aate
to sahar ham naahin aate
mil jaataa kahin gaanv maa ee rang bharaa pyaar
to sahar ham naahin aate
to sahar ham naahin aate
tore jaisi chhori hoti koi gaanv maa hamaar
to sahar ham naahin aate
to sahar ham naahin aate
dekh sahar maa roop ki garmi
aavan lagaa paseenaa haay-haay
dekh sahar maa roop ki garmi
aavan lagaa paseenaa
kisi ne bholaa jaan ke lootaa
kisi ne manvaa chheenaa
phir bhi ham ee baat pe khush hain
jeenaa ee hai jeenaa
bhaiyaa jeenaa ee hai jeenaa
o o o uhaan suni jaaye aise jo kunvaaron ki pukaar
to sahar ham
sahar ham naahin aate
to sahar ham naahin aate
tore jaisi chhori hoti koi gaanv maa hamaar
to sahar ham naahin aate
to sahar ham naahin aate
nainaa phislayi chehron se jui geelee sadak se paanv
haay haay
nainaa phislayi chehron se jui geeleesadak se paanv
raam-qasam ab chhod sahar ham kabhoon na jaibe gaanv
jahaan naa ee ankhiyan ki madiraa
naa julphan ki chhaanv
bhaiyaa naa julphan ki chhaanv
o o aisi gori-gori baanhon ke mile jo hote haar
to sahar ham
sahar ham naahin aate
to sahar ham naahin aate
tore jaisi chhori hoti koi gaanv maa hamaar
to sahar ham naahin aate
to sahar ham naahin aate
mil jaataa kahin gaanv maa ee rang bharaa pyaar
to sahar ham naahin aate
to sahar ham naahin aate

It’s a fairly enjoyable song, Mahesh ji. I was reminded of Humka Aisa waisa na samjho hum bade kaam ki cheez…ADALAT, 1977.

Thanks Dr.
Apart from Adalat song, I was also reminded of the following duet.

Am toying with the idea of collating “Torey” songs of Mukesh if there are more. 🙂
