Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 15
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so, we do get to a song in Saigal Sb’s voice song in this series. Memory serving right, I would have preferred to start the series with this song. But oh well. Actually, we do have a Saigal Sb song earlier in this series. But that song – “Babul Mora, Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye”, is rerecorded in Jagjit Singh Chitra Singh voices.

Remembering the memorable singer KL Saigal Sb – it is 73 years today, since this Divine Voice departed from this mortal world. The singer has gone away, his voice, the sound captured in the songs recorded by him, are still alive.

The re-use film is ‘Do Raaste’ (1969) and this song is used as a backdrop in two places in the film. In both scenes, the song is being played from a 78 rpm record on an old styled gramophone. Almost the entire cast of the film gets presented in the two short clips. We see Balraj Sahni, Veena, Kamini Kaushal, Rajesh Khanna, Junior Mehmood and Jayant in the first clip. There is a lady actor sitting with Kamini Kaushal in the first part – is she Kumud Bole? Also, the baby girl with Junior Mehmood – I have seen her in other films also, but I am unable to put a name to her face. Then in the second clip, in addition to the above listed cast, we also have Prem Chopra, Bindu and Mumtaz. And yes, it is Krishnakant who gazes back at us from his perch in the portrait on the wall.

In its time, ‘Do Raaste’ was a popular hit film. Rajesh Khanna was the rising star at that time, plus the music of the film became very popular. Times were when a middle class joint family homes, were presented on screen quite realistically so. The story of the film is a typical loving family scenario, and then we have unhappiness and strife intervene – a new lady joining the household and sows the seeds of step-brotherly misunderstandings. The divide goes to extremes, before things get reformed and patched up. And then it is a joint happy family all over again.

This song appears twice in the film, once at the beginning, when everything is in a relaxed mood, and the household is the blessed ‘nyaara bangla’. And then, this song is presented again close to the end of the film, when all misunderstandings have been removed, and whole family reunites and returns once again to the ‘nyaara bangla‘.

In both the scenes, the song is being played on an old gramophone, which is manually operated. It has a big sound horn attached, as we remember from the old HMV logo. Ah, the pleasures of pure sounds from the 78 rpm records – no electronics, just a very authentic reproduction of the original sound as stored in electric impulses on the shellac. The wonders that were, without the later technologies and advancements. No creation of sound reproduction technology can even come close to the sound of a 78 rpm record playing on an HMV 102 machine – hand cranked, not even electricity to power the turntable. It continues to be a marvel of that age, which is also exemplified by another unique accomplishment – single mike recording with orchestra and multiple singers. The marvels of modern acoustic technology pale in comparison.

The song also brings back the memories of the heady days in the year 2011, going across the months of May through September. The blog was a ‘song-a-day’ platform for Saigal Sb songs. By the time we ended, we had brought on board all the Hindi/Urdu songs of Saigal Sb, which are available in public domain. The mind just cannot believe it is already more than 8 years ago that we went on that exhilarating journey. The joy of getting that done was surely a wondrous taste. But then I also think with some melancholy – that no more Saigal Sb songs are to be posted on our blog. Today’s post in this series is a device that makes us remember and revisit this miracle of nature that was – the voice of Saigal Sb. I take back my words – I would prefer to use ‘is’ instead of ‘was’. I am sure you will agree – for the voice continues to be with us. That peerless, unmatched, incomparable voice, that can only be replayed now.

Our dear Arun ji has mentioned in his previous post – “Door. . . Bahut Door” from yesterday – it was Raj Khosla’s (producer director of ‘Do Raaste’) own childhood memories that probably brought this song into the film. His father loved KL Saigal songs that would often play the records at home on an old gramophone. Those memories were relived by Raj Khosla himself, as he directed ‘Do Raaste’. Wonderful revival, wonderful renewal, wonderful memory stimulant. Thanks Raj Khosla ji, and thanks to Arun ji for bringing in this connect.

The original credits of this song are – lyrics by Kedar Sharma and music by RC Boral. Singing voice of course, is the inimitable Saigal Sb. Listen yet once again to this wondrous original voice – a benefaction of God Himself.

The movie had only two songs in it. Fortunately, some kind soul has uploaded both these songs.

Here is the first song from “Pagli”(1974) to appear in the blog. This song is a cabarat song. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Bindu. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

With this song, “Pagli'(1974) makes its debut in the blog.

This is the 15300th song post in the blog

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 50
——————————————————————————

Welcome all to this post under this series where I am presenting yet another song from the Seventies. The last post presented in this series was also presented by me that too was a song from the year 1973.

The song under discussion is also from a movie of 1973.

Ever since Atul ji started this series it has become my routine to regularly check for movies which are eligible to be discussed in the series in the forthcoming month. I try to find movies that triggers long dormant memories of those days, associated either with the movies or their songs.

I may not necessarily have watched all those movies. In some cases it is only the songs from these movies, frequently being played on the radio or loudspeakers may have left lasting memories in my mind.

The movie for today’s song is a case inn point. I have not watched this movie till now, but I remember its song ‘tere naam ka deewaana, tere dar ko dhoondhtaa hai’ which was arguably the most popular of all the songs of this movie, as it was frequently played on the radio then. I did not like this song those days. Nevertheless this was the song and not any other songs that I associate with its movie.

After many years I listened to ‘honi to hoke rahegi anhoni naa hoye’ and liked it very much.

One more song from this movie which was popular and was played on radio and loudspeakers is the song being presented today. It was only after I browsed the list for the pending songs from this movie that I get to know that this song was from this movie ‘Suraj Aur Chandaa’.

I was surprised when I find that this song has not been posted on the blog till now.

As mentioned above I had not watched this movie or its songs till now. It was during the preparation of this post that I watched the video of this song for the first time.

Despite their popularity, none of these songs made it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year.

Before going into the song let us have a look on the movies represented on the blog ten years ago this day 16th November 2009;

Movies represented on the blog on 16.11.2009 (in descending order);

Sajanwaa bairi ho gaye hamaar Teesri Kasam-1966 All Songs Covered in the blog

‘Sooraj Aur Chandaa-1973’ or ‘Suraj Aur Chandaa’ was directed by T. Madhava Rao for ‘Suraj Films, Madras’. (It was a costume drama movie as mentioned in HFGK Vol V). It was produced by A.V. Subramaniam. It had Sanjeev Kumar, Meeta (new discovery), Sujeet Kumar, Jagdeep, Lakshmi Chhaya, Shyama, Jairaj, Sajjan, Krishna Kant, Mukri, Ram Mohan, Herucles, Lalita Kumari, Sujata, Mona, Kamal, Bhimraj, Arun Kumar, Prem Kumar, Ravindra and others. Banda makes a special appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by B. Vittalacharya, and dialogues were written by Raj Baldev Raj. Editing of this movie was done by G.G. Krishna Rao.

The movie was passed by Censor Board on 22.05.1973.

This movie had total six songs penned by Anand Bakshi and composed to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Three out of the six songs have been posted on the blog earlier.

Today’s song is the fourth songsfrom this movie to appear on the blog. The song is picturized on Bindu and Sanjeev Kumar where Bindu is lip syncing in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. Also, there are snakes around in the picturisation of this song.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the movie and its songs.

Editor’s note:-This song was quite a well known and hummable song of 1970s. It was a song which one heard without necessaily being aware of its details.

From the lyrics, one would guess that a lady is singing about her beloved who has come from far off.

When one watches the picturisation, all such assumptions get thrown out of the window. What one watches in the picturisation is something mind blowing, inadvertently so.

The song is a “naagin” song, in which a “naagin” is singing this love song to her beloved. “Naagin” is played by Bindu and Sanjeev Kumar is her beloved.

“Naagin”(1954) provided the template of all “Naagin” movies, but this movie “Suraj Aur Chanda” (1973) takes that template to a different plane altogether.

In all other “Naagin” movies, a snake charmer (Sapera) plays the been and the female snake (invariably ichhaadhaari naagin) would turn into a human female and would then perform a dance. In this song, it is different. Here it is the snakes who play the “been” (yes seriously, just watch the picturisation). The snakes do not just play the been, they play the whole orchestra including instruments like Dholak, Tabla, Sitar etc as well. 🙂 And the lead snake Bindu performs the dance.

Snakes playing the music ! It is something unprecedented in the annals of Hindi movies ! I am not aware of any such instance in any other movie.

What an idea ! In my younger days, I would laugh at such a picturisation, but now, I can only be amused at the weirdly imaginative brain of the person behind the picturisation of this song.

This song deserves special recognition, especially for its picturisation.

We in this blog hereby make this song the century song of the blog.

THIS song is the 15300th song post in the blog. This song, marking the 153th century post of the blog is a “special” song in its own way. Picturisation of this song can keep people amused for hours ! 🙂

It appears that Laxmikant Pyarelal had specialised in being music directors of “Naagin” movies of that era. They would compose music for such well known “Naagin” movies like “Nageena”(1986)and “Nigaahen”(1989)” as well. These movies had Sridevi as the ichchaadhaari naagin. Remember ‘balma tum balma ho mere khaali naam ke’ 🙂 ?

So, with this amusingly picturised song, the blog completes another century. An agonisingly slow century that took 72 days. Very much in line with the slowing economy. 🙂

But on a different note, as many as 35 movies made their debut and three movies got YIPPEED during this period.

Thanks are due to all the supporters, well wishers, contributors, regulars and visitors whose continues support ensures that this musical bandwagon keeps chugging along on and on.

“Shankar Shambhu”(1976) was directed by Chaand for A K Movies Bombay. The movie had Feroz Khan, Vinod Khanna, Sulakshana Pandit, Bindu, Jagdeep, Ajeet, Anwar Hussain, Suhir, Sulochana, Jayshree T, Shantanu, Jankidas, Viju Khote, Kishore Sinha etc with guest appearances by Pradeep Kumar and Lalita Pawar.

The movie had five songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from “Shankar Shambhu”(1976) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised as a mujra song on Bindu and Vinod Khanna.

It appears to be a rare song in the sense that it is one of rare occasions when Sahir Ludhianvi must have penned lyrics for Kalyanji Anandji.

This song appears to be a forerunner of the “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”(1978) mujra song “Salaam e ishq meri jaan zara kubool kar le”.

Song-Mera dil churaa kar na aankhen chura (Shankar Shambhu)(1976) Singer-Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

mera dil chura kar na aankhen chura
mera dil chura kar na aankhen chura
sab kahenge tujhe bewafa bewafa
bewafa bewafa
dekh dil ko laga kar na dena daga
dekh dil ko laga kar na dena daga
sab kahenge tujhe bewafa bewafa
bewafa bewafa
mera dil chura kar na aankhen chura

hamne de di hai tujhko jubaan
ho hamne de di hai tujhko jubaan
tere kadmon mein niklegi jaan aan
tere kadmon mein niklegi jaan
dil ka naazuk sa hai ye aayina
dil ka naazuk sa hai ye aayina
tod dena na ae meharbaan aan
tod dena na ae meharbaan
ban ke toota agar silsila silsila
ban ke toota agar silsila silsila
sab kahenge tujhe bewafa bewafa
bewafa bewafa
mera dil chura kar na aankhen chura

gair ke ghar na rakhna kadam
ho gair ke ghar na rakhna kadam
ye sitam sah na paayenge hum m
ye sitam sah na paayenge hum
toone gar hamko dhokha diya
toone gar hamko dhokha diya
zahar kha lenge teri kasam m
zahar kha lenge teri kasam
jab janaaza uthha pyaar ka pyaar ka
jab janaaza uthha pyaar ka pyaar ka
sab kahenge tujhe bewafa bewafa
bewafa bewafa
mera dil chura kar na aankhen chura

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 9
———————————————————————

My last post on our blog has been sometime back. I have been meaning to write about this song which has a couple of rare occurrences in the Hindi Film and Music world and was waiting for an opportune moment.

Recently, I have been fighting my own battles on my health front, having been hospitalised for surgical and advanced interventional pain management procedures, more than a couple of times in the last one year. I have diabetes, which is under control, however it has caused neuropathy in both my feet causing severe pain with tingling and burning sensations. I would like to take this opportunity to create awareness amongst all the readers of this blog that diabetes can be very dangerous and draining and that one should take care of their feet. One’s feet bear the entire weight of one’s body but always fail to get the attention and good care, as with other parts of the body.

Well, coming back to today’s post. Late last month, we, the regular (and irregular) contributors of this blog were told by our beloved SudhirJi, that the blog was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its creation and that song posts were expected from all the contributors. However, as hard as I tried, I couldn’t stick up to the deadline of sending in our contributions. However, Sudhir Ji would not relent and sent me another request to send in my post. This made me very embarrassed and I made a promise to myself that come what may, I will write my post and send it today, three days after my second extended deadline.

My association with this blog actually started around two years after I started my Facebook group – Rare Hindi Film Songs in 2010. In searching for old and rare songs to post, I would often visit the blog and later I came to know that even Atul Ji, the creator of this blog was a member and a regular visitor of my group. However, it took me almost 4 years to write my first post – for the song “Chup Chup Chup Kyon Baithe Ho” – and send it to Atul Ji for moderation and posting. Since then, I have been sending in my posts in bursts, start and stop.

Till date I have just posted about 20 odd songs, but I feel so much drawn to the Atulites group that I feel I have come to my home group amongst these various people across the world, who share similar passion and views. In particular, Avinash Ji and Sudhir Ji seem to like my kind of songs from movies of the 70s and early eighties, not that others are not encouraging.

My heartiest congratulations to Atul Ji, ASAD, Atulites and all the people who love HFM, on the 10th anniversary of this endeavour !!!

Now coming to today’s song. As I have mentioned above, this is a special song for me as it has a few rare characteristics associated with it, in the HFM world and also since it is quite a rare song. It is from the Pran, Navin Nischol and Rekha starrer ‘Dharma’ released in 1973. Two other songs from this movie have been posted earlier on the blog. For those who haven’t seen the movie or have forgotten it, the plot summary can be read here on IMDB.

Now, coming to this song with ‘Two Rare Occurrences’ for a Hindi movie!

It is an almost eight minute long song, starting with a straight cut and paste of the song “Aur Mera Naam Hai Jameela” sung by Lata Mangeshkar from the 1967 film ‘Night in London’ (composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and penned by Anand Bakshi). In both the films, Helen is the dancer performing this song on screen. But of course, the choreography is different in the two films. In this clip from ‘Dharma’, only one stanza of the original song from ‘Night In London’ is included and it is about 2 minutes in duration. Well this is one rare thing.

The second and most important rare thing about this song is that after Helen’s initial lip syncing to this cut-paste song, the actual song, sung by Asha Bhosle, is lip synced by four of the best cabaret dancers of that era. Of course after the Numero Uno – Helen – who’s in the first part. The subsequent segments are performed by Faryal, Sonia Sahani, Jayashree T and Bindu.

The video opens with Helen beginning the dance with some male dancers. The music has already begun. We can also see Ramesh Deo with Asit Sen, who is watching the dance wide-eyed and lecherously. They go to another dance bar and Faryal starts her part followed by Sonia Sahni performing in the third bar. In the fourth bar, Jayashree T is performing bhangra. In the last bar, they do drugs with drinks while Bindu is performing. In this film, Madan Puri and Ramesh Deo are together shown to cheat rich men by taking them to clubs and tempting them with wine and women. The song shows Seth Garib Das (Asit Sen) is being trapped by them and this cabaret number is organized for him.

I hope all of you like the interesting facts of this song as well as the song. Please comment.

Song – Arey Saaqi Jo Kal Ki Hai Bachi Baaki (Dharma) (1973) Singer – Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Omi, Lyrics – Verma Malik, MD – Sonik-Omi

Lyrics

yaar ki nigaahon me
pyaar ki mehfil me
saahib main rahti hoon
aashiqon ke dil me
aur mera naam hai jameela

har ek dil ko dhadakne ki aadat huyi
main jis gali se bhi guzri qayamat huyi
log nazren bichaane lage
log nazren bichaane lage
haal dil ka sunaane lage
yaar ki nigaahon me
pyaar ki mehfil me
saahib main rahti hoon
aashiqon ke dil me
aur mera naam hai jameela

arey saaqi
jo kal ki hai
bachi baaki
usi ka daur chal jaaye
arey saaqi
jo kal ki hai
bachi baaki
usi ka daur chal jaaye
utha parda
dekh jalwa
ke sheeshe mein
jawani ab utar jaaye
arey saaqi

rani hoon main raat ki
tu hai galiyon ka raaja
aa
rani hoon main raat ki
tu hai galiyon ka raaja
soyi hui jawani ko
tu chhoo ke zara jaga ja
meri nigahein, aadayen ye baahein bulaayen
veeraa. . .
hahh veeraa. . .aah
la laa la laa la laa la laa

o ho
machal ke pee
sambhal ke pee
paimane mein maikhaana doob na jaaye
machal ke pee
sambhal ke pee
paimane mein maikhaana doob na jaaye
arey saaqi

dil le ja nishaani
badi meherbaani
haaye dil le jaa nishaani
badi meherbaani
teri jiyegi
teri jiyegi jug jug jawaani
o mere dil jaani
teri jiyegi jug jug jawaani
ho mere dil jaani
haaye
ve sun sajna
ve sun makhna
tu yaad rakhna
ke yaari toot na jaaye
ve sun sajna
ve sun makhna
tu yaad rakhna
ke yaari toot na jaaye
ve sun sajana..aa..aa. . .

dum mein dum hai to dum laga
duniya kya hai nasha hi nasha
aasmaan ke baadal to
kuchh bhi nahin
mazaa to tab hai ke
zameen pe baadal bana
mere humdum
raat hai kam
ke baaton mein
ye saari
raat na jaaye
mere humdum. . .

Blog Day : 3528 Post No. : 14170

1970s was an era of sponsored Radio Programmes in India. SLBC as well Vividh Bharati had such sponsored programmes those days. “inspector Eagle ke kaarnaame” was one popular weekly sponsored programme on Vividh Bharati those days. Inspector Eagle would solve a case every week in this programme. The name Eagle was given to the inspector because the programme was sponsored by Eagle Flasks.

“Inspector Eagle”(1978) was a “mystery” (rahasya pradhan) movie which was directed by Vishwamitra Adil for Navprabhat Pictures, Bombay. This movie had Sanjeev Kumar, Neelam Mehra, Bindu, Yunus Parvez, Ranjeet, Shivraj, Macmohan, Shaukat Kaifi, Mohan Sherry, C S Dubey, Asha Chandra, Goga Kapoor, Vikas Anand, Sulabha Arya, R P Sethi, Radheshyam, O P Kohli, Chandu, Pardesi, Ravikant, Habeeb, Paintal, A K Hangal (special appearance) etc in it. This movie “Inspector Eagle”(1978) was very much inspired by that radio programme. In fact I think Eagle Flasks had financed this movie. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this matter.

The movie had three songs in it. All these three songs were sung by Asha Bhonsle. Personally I do not recall having heard any of these songs during those days.

Here is the first song from “Inspector Eagle”(1978) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Madan Mohan.

The song is picturised as a cabarat dance song on Bindu. Those were the days when Bellbottoms were a big rage in India. People who have no idea what bell bottoms looked like can see it in this picturisation. 🙂

With this song, “Inspector Eagle”(1978) makes its debut in the blog.

Song-Tum kyun aate nahin (Inspector Eagle)(1978) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

tum kyun aate nahin
tum kyun aate nahin
bechain tan hai
pyaasa badan hai
haan haan haan
bechain tan hai
pyaasa badan hai
tum kyun aate nahin
tum kyun aate nahin
tum kyun aate nahin

sab rang in labon ka
tum par fida jo aao
aawaara gesuon ki barsen ghata jo aao
sab rang in labon ka
tum par fida jo aao
aawaara gesuon ki barsen ghata jo aao
madhosh dil ko kar do
daaman mein phool bhar do
daman mein phool bhar do
ya mujhko qatl kar do
qatl kar do
qatl kar do
qatl kar do
tum kyun aate nahin
tum kyun aate nahin
tum kyun aate nahin

betaab dil pe mere
dekho karo na ghaaten
betaab dil pe mere
dekho karo na ghaaten
aa jaao tum to mahke
aur bahke jawaan raaten
raaton ko ek saher do
daaman mein phool bhar do
daaman mein phool bhar do
ya mujhko qatl kar do
qatl kar do
qatl kar do
qatl kar do
tum kyun aate nahin
tum kyun aate nahin
tum kyun aate nahin

ye jism gora gora
jo chhup ke zara dhhalke
aur hogi aise jaise rangeen sharaab chhalke
ye jism gora gora
jo chhup ke zara dhhalke
aur hogi aise jaise rangeen sharaab chhalke
koi apni bhi khabar do
daaman mein phool bhar do
daaman mein phool bhar do
daaman mein phool bhar do
ya mujhko qatl kar do
qatl kar do
qatl kar do
qatl kar do
tum kyun aate nahin
bechain tan hai
pyaasa badan hai
tum kyun aate nahin
tum kyun aate nahin
tum kyun aate nahin

“Buniyaad”(1972) was produced and directed by Virendra Sharma for Pragati Chitra International movie. The movie had Shatrughan Sinha, Farida Jalal, Yogita Bali, Rakesh Roshan, Bindu, Faryal, Pran, Jankidass, Sajjan etc in it.

The movie had four songs in it. Three songs from the movie have been covered in the blog so far. Here are the details of these three songs :-

Main hoon kismatwaala dilwaala matwaala 13277 24-May-17
Muhabbat achchi cheez hai 14147 10-Mar-18

The fourth and final song from the movie, which is the song under discussion, was a popular song of its time. It is a seduction song.

Regular music lovers are aware that Lata normally did not sing cabarat songs/ seduction songs in HFM and they were mostly sung by Asha Bhonsle. But Lata has sung a few songs of such genre and they are awesome songs. The trick was to convince her to sing such songs. Laxmikant Pyarelal, Ganesh, Chitragupta, Shankar Jaikishan, Rajesh Roshan seem to be the only music directors who had the knack of convincing her to sing cabarat/ seduction songs. Just sample the awesome cabarat/ seduction songs that Lata has sung in Hindi movies. It can be noticed that a vast majority of these songs are sung under the baton of Laxmikant Pyarelal:-

The song is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

The song is lip synced as a seduction song on Bindu and Rakesh Roshan, with Sajjan also visible in the picturisation.
With this song, the fourth and final song from the movie, “Buniyaad”(1972) now joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Blog Day : 3519 Post No. : 14132

I had promised my co-Atulite and friend Avinash Ji that my next post will be of a song to his liking and which he, as probably many of us, have forgotten in more than four decades since this movie has been released. Some of the readers may be hearing this song for the first time.

This movie was released in the year that I passed out from my school and probably saw it during the intervening period when I left the school and started my junior college. The movie was no great shakes, as in a run-of-the-mill romantic thrillers with the then popular (one of them) jodis of Randhir Kapoor and Rekha. These two acted together in many movies starting with Rampur Ka Laxman (1972), Dharam Karam (1975), Dafaa 302 (1975), Khalifa (1976), Ram Bharose (1977), etc.

Aaj Ka Mahatma (1976) was directed by Kundan Kumar for producers Kundan Kumar and Sharad Kumar, music by Laxmikant and Pyarelal.

The movie stars Randhir Kapoor, Rekha, Ranjeet, Bindu, Manmohan, Manmohan Krishna, Kumud Chuggani, Purnima, Shetty, Keshav Rana, Abhimanyu Sharma, Keshto Mukherjee, Sanjana, Dilip Dutt, Manorama, Rajan Haksar, Jeevan, Anand Joshi, Kirti Kumar, Rajan Kapoor, Narbada Shankar, A.N. Malhotra, Bhagwan Sinha, Deepak, Ramesh Deo, etc

The storyline:

Randhir and Ranvir Verma are twins. Randhir is straightforward, while Ranvir is a petty criminal. These petty thefts add up, and soon the police arrest Ranvir, and he is sentenced to prison. In prison, Ranvir incurs the wrath of a gangster, Tony, and is killed. Randhir undertakes to find the killer, and gets himself arrested, and imprisoned to get to see who the killer is. After getting out from prison, Randhir plans to avenge his brother’s death, without knowing that he himself could endanger his very life, as well the life of his girlfriend, Mala. The song “Chandni chand se hoti hai, sitaron se nahin, pyar bhi ek se hota hai hazaron se nahin…” is still popular.

This song is sung by the one and only Lata Mangeshkar (many a times sounding like sister Usha, in this song), penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. It is lip synced by Bindu who is dancing to the song. The lead pair of Randhir Kapoor and Rekha are also present.

The song has a Goan flavour, with strong use of trumpets. There were many songs, based on Goan music, composed by LP after the success of “Na maangoon sona chandi” from Bobby 1973. In 1974, it was “Daaru ki botal mein” from Majboor; in 1976 it was today’s song and “Prem ka rog bada bura” from Dus Numbri; in 1977 they came up with “Hey La la Hey Lala Jhoomo Zara” from Chacha Bhatija; etc.

With this song, Aaj Ka Mahatma (1976) makes its debut on this blog.

I hope this song brings nostalgia to lots of people who were in their teens during the mid-seventies.

Song-Kombda ba baanu aashiq zhaala (Aaj Ka Mahatma)(1976) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

Kombda ba baanu aashiq zhaala

Aaya aaj dikhaane
Chori kar ke seena jori
Jaane nahin
Mujhe pehchaane nahin
Yeh bahana re khoob nikaa la aa
Kombda ba baanu aashiq zhaala
Dekho ree kaisi sundar baala
Leke aa la aa
Kombda ba baanu

O ho meri jaan
Hazaaron mein akeli
Kahaan aan phansi ho
Meri chhoti si albeli
haay haay
O ho meri jaan
Hazaaron mein akeli
Kahaan aan phansi ho
Meri chhoti si albeli
Maano sanam
Ke nahin maano sanam
Humko kahna jo thha wo kah daa la aa
Kombda ba baanu aashik zhaala
Dekho re kaisi sundar baala
Kombda ba baanu aashik zhaala
Dekho re kaisi sundar baala
Leke aa la aa
Kombda ba baanu
Kombda ba baanu aashiq zhaala
Dekho ree kaisi sundar baala
Leke aa la aa
Kombda ba baanu uu
