Hullo Atuldom
1st August is the date when Meena Kumari was born as Mahjabeen Bano.
She had a career spanning 33 years, starting as a child artist in 1939. At a young age of 5 she became the bread-winner of her family. Fans of Meena Kumari know that she went on to adult roles from 1946 when she appeared in ‘Bachchon Ka Khel’ & ‘Duniya Ek Sarai’. ‘Baiju Bawra’ & ‘Parineeta’ helped her gain prominence as an actress. Till the late 1950s she had acted in films ranging from drama to comedy to fantasy before “Chiraag Kahaan Roshni Kahan”; “Main Chup Rahungi” & such other movies earned her ‘tragedy-queen’ sobriquet. Personally I liked her ‘chulbuli’ characters in “Miss Mary”, “Kohinoor”, “Azaad” etc.
I was aware that Meena Kumari had lent her voice to recite her own poems “I Write, I Recite” for which Khayyam gave music. Also, “Leke Angrai” in her voice from ‘Pakeezah’ was released as ‘Pakeezah Rang Barang’ in 1977 (five years after her death).
But going by the knowledge, that in the period Meena Kumari made her debut in films, there were many actors who sang their own songs. I found a few such songs, in Meena Kumari’s voice, that could be posted here. There was one song from “Bichchade Balam” (1948) ‘ek aag lagi hai dil mein’ that has been credited to Meena Kapoor by the uploader on YouTube. Another uploader has credited it to Meena Kumari. On checking with Atulji, he said he was sure that the voice was of Meena Kapoor & not of a young Meena Kumari (who must have been all of 14/15 when that song came.) But then he found HFGK crediting the song to Meena Kumari. Since, there was a confusion I gave that song a go-by for this post.
(We need to find the correct answer for this)
The song which I finally landed on for today is from the 1946 released “Duniya Ek Sarai”, simply because the blog already has six songs from the film. I could only find the audio of the songs of the film. I also found that Kidar Nath Sharma was the director (the same person who later made ‘Bawre Nain’ & many more). This post by Sudhirji in 2013 give details about the cast of the film.
The singers used by Hansraj Behl in the film were Mohammed Farooqui, Shamshad Begum, Hamida Banu, Mukesh, Zohrabi & Meena Kumari. Her voice was heard in 3 songs. Today’s song is one of them, wish we could see the young & sweet Meena Kumari sing this in on-screen too, but video is not available.
Song-Maa dekh ree maa badlee huyee jawaan (Duniya Ek Sarai)(1947) Singer-Meena Kumari, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Hansraj Bahl
