#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————————————
(4th August’2024- Kishore Kumar’s 95th birth anniversary )
Today 4th August is the ninety-fifth birth anniversary of singer-actor-producer-director-lyricist & music director Kishore Kumar. He was born on 4th August 1929 at Khandwa (now in Madhya Pradesh). Kishore Kumar left this world at the age of fifty-eight on 13th Octorber 1987 in Bombay (now Mumbai).
Today we are paying our tributes to this multi-faceted genius on this blog.
I am looking for some Kishore Kumar songs from his earlier years to discuss today. We are aware that Kishore Kumar started his singing career with the 1948 movie ‘Ziddi’ where he had given playback for actor Dev Anand. This was the song “Marne Ki Duaayein Kyun Maangoon“.
In his singing career Kishore Kumar had earlier restricted himself to giving playback to his friend Dev Anand and himself only. However there are some instances when he sang for some other actors too e.g. he sang for actor Sajjan in the movie ‘Najariyaa’ (1952). The first twenty years of Kishore Kumar’s career had lot of ups and downs. In fact he saw more downs than ups as mentioned by our in-house encyclopedia Shri Arunkumar ji in his post for the song “Ghar Ke Maalik Ghar Nahin” (film ‘Muqaddar’, 1950). Shri Arunkumar ji had done a series under the title ‘Vintage Kishore’ on this blog. This series has twenty two posts. I wish that readers should go through all these posts which are a treasure-trove for this blog.
Besides singing Kishore Kumar was getting offers for acting too and he acted in many movies in those years. It was only after the movie ‘Padosan’ (1968) that he decided to focus more on his singing. By that time he had sung many memorable songs for himself and for the actor Dev Anand.
Here is an extract from a post of Shri Arunkumar jee about Kishore Kumar;
The journey of Kishore Kumar on the path of becoming a singer was full of mostly downs rather than ups. The rare occasions of ups were when he got to sing 7 out of 11 songs in film ‘Chham Chhama Chham’ (1952) and 3 out of 5 songs in the film ‘Naukari’ (1954). The latter was more satisfying because the film had a grudging composer, Salil Chaudhary, who needed lot of cajoling and convincing by Kishore’s well-wishers to allow him to sing in the film.
From an early age, Kishore was drawn towards singing and he used to imitate the then famous singer, Kundan Lal Saigal, who reigned as a singer actor. Those were the days when actors sang their songs themselves. Today, however, actors just lip sync on screen, to the playback singer’s voice.
Kishore was a very versatile singer but even the best of music directors of that era were not convinced of his genius and so Kishore had to wait for more than 20 years, after he set foot in the Hindi film industry, before he could bag recognition for singing with the first of his coveted awards.
In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Paisaa Hi Paisaa’ (1956) where Kishore Kumar was the lead actor of the movie.
‘Paisaa Hi Paisaa’ (1956) was directed by Mehrish for Mehboob Productions. This movie has Kishore Kumar, Shakeela, Mala Sinha, Radhakishan, Jul Velani, Shyam Kumar, Amar, Mukri, Murad, Husn Banu, Haroon, Kumud Tripathi, P Bali, Siddiqui and others. This movie has ten songs which were all written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Music for this movie was composed by Anil Biswas.
Here is what Arunkumar jee has mentioned about this movie in his post for the song “Bas Ek Tum Bin Kal Na Padey” from this movie earlier on the blog.
Film ‘Paisa Hi Paisa’ was an out and out a Kishore Kumar film. During the period 1953 to 1965 Kishore Kumar was in great demand. In this period he did 55 films out of his total 91 released films. In his films, he, his songs and his comedy antics were main. Producers never bothered about a strong story base in his films. In any case, his audience wanted to see and hear him, being least bothered about histrionics or literary value of the film story etc. Stories were written for his films to give full scope to his antics. The story of film Paisa hi Paisa-56 was,
Kishore (Kishore Kumar) is the only son of his miser father. Though very rich, his father always looked for making extra money by hook or crook. He has no scruples in his pursuit of money. When Kishore grew up enough for marriage, his father wanted him to marry some rich girl, so that he gets a fat dowry and all his property. However Kishore’s nature is different. He is a happy, jolly fellow. Fed up of father’s pestering he runs away from home, meets Mala (Mala Sinha) and they dutifully fall in love. However Mala would marry him only if both families give their consent. Kishore was sure that his father would never agree for this marriage.
Kishore then plans a scheme, with the help of his friends. He makes his father believe that Mala is daughter of a very rich person and that fat dowry would be given. At the time of marriage, a close bag is given to his father. When he is about to open the bag, police arrives and arrests the father for taking dowry which is illegal. He is panicky and to get out of this mess, he agrees to the marriage, without dowry!
Six songs (including one two part song) from this movie have been posted on the blog earlier. I am presenting today the seventh song from this movie.
Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and a female voice. HFGK Vol-III mentions that there is a possibility of the female voice being the voice of Meena Kapoor. This is a nice song to listen and enjoy. From the lyrics of the songs I can guess that it about the ‘road side astrologer’ with ‘his bird’ in the cage (generally it is parrot, but in this case it is ‘chidiya’) telling people about their fortune.
I do not remember to have listened to this song earlier. But I am a great fan of such type of songs sung by Kishore Kumar as they energise the listeners and cause one to shake a leg or two or break into a dance . 🙂
The lyrics for this song are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by Anil Biswas.
Let us listen to the song now …

उल्टे रे ताने बाने
जो ज्ञानी इंसान ना समझे
