(Gulzar Saab’s 90th birthday 18th August’2024)
Today 18th August, 2024 is the ninety-first birthday of Poet, Lyricist, Writer, Director and Producer Gulzar Saab. On this occasion we wish him a very ‘happy birthday’ today and also wish him a healthy and peaceful life ahead.
Gulzar was born as Sampooran Singh Kalra on 18th August’1934 at Dina, District Jhelum, in Punjab which is now in Pakistan. Their family shifted to Delhi (Old Delhi) after partition. Gulzar Saab had come a long way since then as younger boy and as a growing youth who had been witnessed to the most ‘bloodied’ part of the history of India i.e. partition of the undivided India into two parts India and Pakistan.
It was in Bombay where he started working as a motor mechanic in a motor garage. From there he joined Bimal Roy Productions. In the journey that started in the decade of fifties, Gulzar Saab came a long way and he went on to become one of the most revered film personalities in the history of Hindi Cinema today. Much has already been written about Gulzar Saab so I will not dwell much into his biographical details.
Whenever I think of him the image that get formed in my mind is that of a big river, flowing silently, its water touching the highest levels of its banks. When I read his poetry and try to understand it by repeatedly revisiting them, I liken him to an Ocean – full of emotions. It feels like I share a relationship with him that has grown over the years.
Normally relationships grow older with time but in this case it has grown younger and younger as the years have passed. I am noting my thoughts that are occurring in my mind. My thoughts may not follow a strict chronological order.
Many thought came to my mind about Gulzar Saab while writing this post; starting from the days when I was in my pre-teens. Those were the days of songs from movies like ‘Aandhi’, ‘Kinaara’, ‘Parichay’ etc.
My first recollections of his songs are from the film ‘Mere Apne’, ‘Anand’ then ‘Angoor’ and ‘Masoom’. As I listened to his songs, I read about him, listened to his lyrics and tried to understand the meaning of his lyrics, read news related to him, kept abreast of his ‘Film fare’ awards and various felicitations that he kept receiving.
If I remember correctly, the first time I got to listen to his soft and mesmerizing voice was in HMV’s album ‘Fursat ke raat din’. I treasure this album as my all-time favourite collection. Then there is his commentary while introducing Bhupen Hazarika’s Hindi songs and where he also gives translation of these songs originally sung in Assamese. Later I came across his TV serial album ‘Mirza Ghalib’, and various non-filmy albums (with Jagjit Singh).
I was still a bachelor when the TV serial ‘Jungle Book’ started on TV and its title song ‘chaddi pahan ke phool khilaa hai’ become a ‘national-anthem’ for children. I have always been fascinated by this quality of Gulzar Saab how he could connect with children through his songs meant for children. His body of work in films meant for children (including films as well as animated films) is something that I cannot have enough of. I keep revisiting them.
He loves children very much. He sincerely and seriously cares for them. In one of his interview on the release of the ‘third edition’ of his book ‘Dyodhhee’ at Pune, He said ‘I am good mother, though I have not gone through the labour pains, I feel it very well ‘We do not respect children!’
‘If a child is crossing a road the whole traffic should be stopped and let the child is allowed to cross the road safely and it would be better if one can help him in doing so’.
Does he miss the innocence in our society? And that’s why he tries to find them in children’s movies; he said ‘To an extent, yes’!!
I had once written about this incident when I was staying at Kota-Rajasthan. (I hope readers will not mind me reproducing it here).
It was the winter season of 1996. The whole crew of ‘Maachis’ including Gulzar Saab was on a visit to Kota and they were staying in various hotels. One of the Hotels where Om Puri, Kanwal Jeet Singh, Raj Zutshi and other members were staying was close to residence. Manager of that Hotel was my good friend. I was informed that I could see these Bollywood personalities or even meet them if I could be there in the morning or late evening.
I was mainly interested in meeting Om Puri and Kanwal Jeet Singh. Tabbu and other actors were staying at different location far away from my place. However I could never get the timings right and so I could never see them.
One fine morning, I was ready for office. Prior to that I took my elder daughter (who was 7/8 months old) for our usual morning walk. I went around the Hotel. I was in for a pleasant surprise.
It was a cold morning so I was wearing a full sweater and my daughter too was dressed like that. Wearing a white starched kurtaa pyjama and standing in the sunshine outside the hotel, was none other than Gulzar Saab. The time was around 08.00-08.30 in the morning. He was standing there alone and nobody took notice of him. The city of Kota, like most places, do not recognise lyricists. People would have thronged the place if it was Dharmendra or Raj Kumar standing like this).
I walked towards him, greeted him with Namaskaar!!
‘Kaise hain Sir aap’
‘Ji thhik hoon!’
You can easily guess my situation. I was not expecting to meet Gulzar Saab, so I could not think how to react. I was just speechless…
I could not believe my good luck ! I was between the transition zone of dream and reality.
So taking a via route and looking at my daughter I said, “beta , Sampooran Singh ji se poochho ‘kaise hain aap?’”
(I had read about him and I knwe by then that his real name is Sampooran Singh)
He smiled and caressed my daughter and showered his ‘Aashirwaad’ on her!
This is one moment in my life that I fondly remember and cherish. Whenever he is there in news or on TV and my daughter is with me, I remind her that she had the great fortunate to have got the ‘Aashirwaad’ of none other than Gulzar Saab.
I will start my ‘Gulzar Saab’ birthday celebrations today with a song that is a ‘children song’. It is from the movie ‘Raahgeer’.
“Raahgeer” (1969), also spelt “Rahgir” was a ‘Geetanjali Chitradeep Production’, Calcutta, and it was directed by Tarun Majumdar. The cast of this movie included Biswajeet, Nirupa Roy, Asit Sen, Sandhya Roy, Vasant Chowdhury, Shashikala, Padma Chauhan, Anwar Hussain, Pahari Sanyal, Master Prasenjit, Iftekhar, Kanhaiyalal, Chaman Puri, Savita Chatterjee, Ram Avtar, Rashid Khan, C.S. Dubey and others in it.
I have never got to watch this movie and it does not seem to be available online.
Here is what our in-house encyclopaedia Shri Arunkumar ji had mentioned in brief about this film while commenting on the song-post of the song ‘janam se banjaaraa hoon bandhu’
“First of all, this is a production of GITANJALI CHITRADEEP, CALCUTTA.
The name of Hemant Kumar’s production house was GEETANJALI PICTURES, BOMBAY. So; there is every possibility that this may be a home production, in some way or the other, of Biswajeet.
I remember having seen this film halfway, in the theatre, as it was very much boring.
Directed by Tarun Majumdar, its cast was, Biswajeet, Sandhya Roy, Shashikala, Padma, Nirupa Roy, Kanhaiyalal, Anwar Hussain, Pahari Sanyal, Prasenjit, Iftekhar, Asit Sen, and Sabita Chatterjee etc.
The story, as I remember, was of a young man who is fond of wandering and sets out on an endless journey. The film depicts various experiences he encounters in his travels. He does not get attached to anybody but becomes a darling of many.
Neither the story, nor the music, nor the actors were of much interest and hence no wonder the film wandered aimlessly in search of success.
“Raahgeer-1969” had ten songs in it and lyrics for all the ten songs were penned by Gulzar and music was composed by Hemant Kumar. Out of the ten songs this movie has, seven have already been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the eighth song from this movie to appear on this blog.
Today’s song is sung by Hemlata and Aarti Mukherjee. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar. Lyrics are by Gulzar Saab. One of the comments on the link of this song mentions that this song seems to be inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s song ‘tomaar kholaa howaa’ … I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.
Let us listen to and enjoy this wonderful song now … (I think this song deserves to be a well-known song, but it seems to have been forgotten like the movie).
Once again , here is wishing Gulzar saab a Very Happy Birthday!!!

Avinash ji,
liked your post written with so much admiration and love for Gulzar. Though I do not recall your earlier post narrating your ‘chance’ meeting with Gulzar, I was happy to note, in this post, that you could meet him face to face. I have similar moments of having met some of my favourite film personalities.
