“Kahaani Ek Chor Ki”(1981) was produced by Balubhai Shah and directed by S Ramnathan for Deepak International, Bombay. This obscure “social” movie had Jeetendra, Vinod Mehra, Mausami Chatterji, Laxmi, Nirupa Roy, Aruna Irani, Asrani, Madan Puri, A K Hangal, Ranjan, Master Titu, Ranjeet, Bhagwan, Chaandrashekhar, Sundar, Jairaj, Shukla, Major Anand, Mukri, Viju Khote, Yusuf, Raju, Ratna, Madhumati Sharma, Uma Khosla, Manik Chaudhary, Master Laddoo, Chiku etc in it.

This movie, which I had never heard of, despite being in the midst of movie watching spree, had four songs in it.

Here is the first song from the movie to appear in the blog. The song is sung mainly by Kishore Kumar, with a few words by Hemlata. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravindra Jain.

The song is ip synced by Vinod Mehra (disguised as a bearded old man) and Laxmi (I hope I have identified her correctly. This song , picturised in a public garden,is apparently a ruse meant to sow seeds of doubt in the mind of Asrani, who is also visible in the songs towards the end.

With this song, “Kahaani Ek Chor Ki”(1981) makes its debut in the blog.

Song-Karishma ye kya meri jaan ho gaya (Kahaani Ek Chor Ki)(1981) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Hemlata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Ravindra Jain

Lyrics

karishma ye kya meri jaan ho gaya
karishma ye kya meri jaan ho gaya
tujhse nazren milin
main jawaan ho gaya
tujhse nazren milin
main jawaan ho gaya
ae buddhe chal hatt
karishma ye kya meri jaan ho gaya
karishma ye kya meri jaan ho gaya
haan

aisi bijli hai tu
kya
aisi bijli hai tu
jo bhi chhoo le jhatka khaaye
main bhi jhatka kha gaya
jaaneman
aisi titli hai tu
are aisi titli hai tu
tere peechhe main jo bhaaga
barson peechhe aa gaya
aaya thha kis kaam se
kar baitha kya kaam
raam naam ki umar mein
tera hua ghulaam
haaye haaye
budhaape mein bhi imtahaa ho gaya
arre arre arre arre
budhaape mein bhi imtahaa ho gaya
ho ho ho

ghar ka de de pata
ae jaani ghar ka de de pata
yoon raste mein chhed khaani karte
aaye hai sharam
meri jaan maaf karna khaata
maaf karna khata
dhandha khota sahi
lekin banda dil ka hai naram
main logon ki mushqilen
karta hoon aasaan
dhan ke haathon bik gaya
na bechoon imaan
dekho jabhi to khuda
meharbaan ho gaya
hahaaha
waah bade miyaan

dekho khuda meharban ho gaya
tujhse nazren milin
main jawaan ho gaya
tujhse nazren milin
main jawaan ho gaya

“Insaaf Ka Taraazu”(1980) was produced and directed by B R Chopra for B R Films, Bombay. This movie was inspired from an American movie called “Lipstick” (1976). The movie was a rape and revenge movie. Many people who thronged to watch “Insaaf Ka Taraazu”(1980) were attracted to the movie hall because of this fact.

The movie had Zeenat Aman, Raj Babbar (new discovery), Deepak Parashar (new discovery), Padmini Kolhapure, Shreeram Lagoo, Simi Garewal, Iftekhar, Jagdish Raj, Vijay Sharma, Prem Sagar, Sunil Dhawan, Om Shivpuri, Sujit Kumar, Yunus Parvez, Sudha Shivpuri etc in it, with Hiralal in a guest appearance and Dharmendra in a special appearance.

“Insaaf Ka Taraazu”(1980) had four songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past.

The details of the songs from the movie that have been covered earlier :-

1 Insaaf ka taraazu 8774 27-Sep-13
2 Log aurat ko faqat jism samajh lete hain 13021 8-Mar-17
3 Hazaar khwaab haqeeqat ka roop le lenge 14913 8-Mar-19

The three songs that have been covered so far were serious songs all penned by Sahir Ludhianvi. The fourth and final song under discussion is a light hearted happy teasing song picturised on Padmini Kolhapure, Zeenat Aman (playing her sister)and Deepak Parashar (playing her would be jeeja ji). Sahir Ludhianvi demonstrates that he was capable of penning superb light hearted non jhonk songs as well.

The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Hemlata and Mahendra Kapoor.

With this song, all the four songs are covered and “Insaaf Ka Taraazu”(1980) joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

Missing Films of 1960s – 97
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Goodness, what a lovely duet this one is. The film is ‘Sampooran Teerath Yatra’ from 1970. I have heard of this film earlier, but never did get an opportunity to listen to its songs. As I planned to bring this film on board in this series, I was checking out the songs of this film. And when I played this duet, I am verily bowled over by the sweetness of this composition.

The film is produced by Roopesh Pictures, Bombay. Now this is a very interesting co-incidence that I notice. The previous song in this series, “Ae Aasmaan Waale Is Waqt Tu Kahaan Hai”, is from the film ‘Ziarat Gahe Hind’. As discussed in that write up, that film is a story of pilgrimage to the Muslim places of worship. Today’s film is a story of pilgrimage to the Hindu places of worship. And guess what, both are produced by the same company – Roopesh Pictures, Bombay. And both released in the same year – 1970. Very, very interesting. 🙂

The film ‘Sampooran Teerath Yatra’ is directed by Dhirubhai Desai. The cast of actors includes Sushma, Ashish Kumar, Jeevan, Niranjan Sharma, Anand Tiwari, SK Shukla, Sahu Modak, Lata Arora, Zeba, Radha, Rajshri, Pal Sharma, Vishnu Pandey, Hari Ram, Dalpat, Master Kukku, Vidya, Ramlal, Deenanath, and Dalda.

Geet Kosh lists 5 songs for this film. All the songs are written by Madan. The music is composed by Pt Shivram. The singing voices are of Mahendra Kapoor and Hemlata. On screen, the song is performed by Ashish Kumar and Sushma.

It appears to be a wedding night song. The couple is meeting for the first time in their private chambers. And they sing this duet of promises of love that go across the cycles of birth and death, and even transcends the aeons. It is such a beautifully constructed song, and has been equally charmingly rendered by Mahendra Kapoor and Hemlata. Mahendra ji is at his softest best – yes, actually in some places, the voice of Hemlata overshadows his voice.

A lovely song, a must listen.

Blog Day : 3877 Post No. : 14900

I began “Blog Ten year challenge (2009-2019)” early this year. As many as ten songs are covered in this series so far. Three other regulars (viz M/s Avinash Scrapwala, Sadanand Kamath and Sudhir Ji) have also chipped in with their articles in this series. In this series, we cover a song from a movie whose song (some other song obviously) was covered in the blog ten years ago on the same day.

There were days when no movies were eligible for “Blog Ten year challenge (2009-2019)” because all the songs covered on that day ten years ago had been YIPPEED by now.

I also noticed that those days in 2009 saw as many as six or seven songs being covered daily. That is in such sharp contrast to the present scene in 2019 where we are barely averaging one song daily thus finally living up to the blog name of “song a day”. 🙂

It basically tells us that a lot of things change in ten years. I was ten years younger in 2009. The blog too was just a few months old and I had a kind of passion and motivation for the blog that I now find impossible to summon for myself.

In one’s younger days, one is not as much in control of one’s life (professional as well as personal) as one becomes later in life. With time, one rises up the ladder in profession life. Simultaneously, ones kids also grow up.

In short, one feels far less in control of one’s life in one’s younger days. Still, that is compensated by youthful energy, passion and motivation. With time, one gains control of one’s life but begins to lose on the gifts of youthful energy, passion and motivation. 🙂

Despite being less in control of my life, I still had time and energy for online activities (which was something new those days). After spending nearly four years in various cricket forums (2004-2008), I began to try my hand in blogging in 2008. This blog was my second blog. My first blog was also related to HFM and associated topics and the articles in that blog were quite exhaustive and time consuming to write. If that blog was like test match, then this song blog was like ODI. 🙂 Much easier and less time consuming. 🙂

Just like ODI is more popular than test cricket, the song blog became popular whereas the other original blog fell by the way side. I posted fifty articles in that blog and then totally stopped updating that. That blog is now lying neglected, with the last post appearing nearly ten years ago in august 2009.

I found posting in the song blog a breeze, that is why I was able to cover six to seven songs everyday in the blog.

That was then ! Today, ten years later, even posting one song a day seems like too much work. Curiously, I had far more workload on me in professional and personal fronts ten years ago. Today I am almost in full control on both fronts. Still my present blog post productivity has taken a major hit. 🙂

There are reasons for that, of course. One reason could be that I posted with an uncluttered mind, like how Sehwag used to bat with an uncluttered mind. In fact, I recall Raja commenting those days that the blog centuries were coming at Sehwag like rate (viz in 14 to 15 days). 🙂

Another cricket concept that we have in the blog is dot day, like how there are dot balls in cricket. The blog more or less lived upto its aim of posting songs everyday come rain or shine, festivals or holidays. But still there are unavaoidable circumstances due to which there have been no posts on certain days. We call those days as dot days for the blog.

When I look at the dot days in the blog, I find that the year 2008 (when this blog began), there were three dot days, viz. 22 sep, 23 sep and 25 september. 2009, the first full year for the blog had as many as 25 dot days. Year 2010 saw a whopping 61 dot days. Year 2011 had 36 dot days.

Situation “improved” in 2012 with only 5 dot days whereas 2013 saw 7 dot days.

Next three years were bad. 2014 had 27, 2015 had 22 and 2016 had 22 dot days.

Amazingly, 2017 was a year with ZERO dot days. So there was a post every day in the year 2017. What an achievement for the blog that year, though I was not aware of it till a few days back.

2018 saw 7 dot days.

So far every day of 2019 has seen at least one post in the blog.

So overall there have been 215 dot days out of 3877 days that the blog has been in existence.

I mentioned above that 2009 had 25 dot days. The first dot day of 2009 was this day ten years ago, viz 28 february 2009.

Now, I would not like today to be a day without posts as part of my ten year challenge. 🙂 It only means that today is a day when blog ten year challenge cannot take place. 🙂

Today 28 february 2019 is the last day of the month. It is the day of clearing hisaab, viz that of milkman etc. It is also the day when many people whose birthday falls in the month superannuate if it was their 60th birthday.

It is a good time for the blog to notch another century, viz century number 149, in other words song post number 14900. This century has taken a glacial 72 days to arrive. The century must have been slow , but looking at the bright side, there was no dot day during these 72 days. 🙂

The song that I have chosen for the occasion is from “Shyam Tere Kitne Naam”(1977). This movie was produced by Vinod Kumar and A Narang and directed by Shantilal Soni. The movie had Sachin, Sarika, Meena T, Manhar Desai, Bharat Bhooshan, Shyama, Jalal Agha, Sunder etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the blog.

The song under discussion is sung by Hemlata. Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravindra Jain.

The song is picturised on Sarika and Sachin, who were a hit jodi of low budget movies in 1970s (mostly produced by Rajshree Productions).

This song marks the birth anniversary of Ravindra Jain (28 february 1944-9 October 2015). This song also happens to be the 100th song of Ravindra Jain in the blog as a music director. So Ravindra Jain becomes the latest centurion in the blog. He is the 36th music director and the 87th artist overall to have one hundred (or above) of his songs showcased in the blog.

As always, I thank one and all for their continuous support and encouragement which keeps fuelling the blog which in turn continues to chug on and on relentlessly in its musical journey.

# Superstar Child Artist – Jr. Mehmood # 5
—————————————————————————

Welcome all to this fifth article in this series, where I am presenting songs picturised on Superstar Child Artist Junior Mehmood and simultaneously exploring his filmography along with his biographical information too.

So far, we have enjoyed the following songs under this series;

Lagey koi lottery koi jackpot lagey

Na koi paisa na ilm

Mera naam hai Mehmood

Birha ki rain sooni sooni sejariya

As I have mentioned in my articles earlier, Junior Mehmood was a familiar name for us children who were growing and still young in the years of the ‘seventies’, and he was the most loved ‘child artist’ in those years of early seventies.

And because of those memories and nostalgia associated with the movies he acted, some of the songs picturised on him became a part of my permanent memory.

Today’s song is one such song and which surprisingly have remained to be posted on the blog so far.

Naeem Sayyad whom we know by the name of Junior Mehmood was born on 15th November’1956 in a middle-class family in Mumbai. His father was a railway engine driver in the railways and Naeem was among the six siblings in the family.

His elder brother was a photographer and used to work for films and during one such shoot when little Naeem accompanied him to watch the shooting it so happened that when a child star working in the movie ‘Kitna Naazuk Hai Dil’ (shelved) was not able to deliver his dialogues properly that little Naeem took a dig at him saying ‘you cannot even speak these simple lines’. The director of the movie was present there and he asked little Naeem if he can speak those lines without mistake and there little Naeem got his first break to work in Hindi movies and the rest is history, as he was noticed (on the sets of ‘Suhaag Raat-1968’) by the great comedian Mehmood who not only give his name to him and recommended him to many producers/directors. Thereafter it was not looking back for Junior Mehmood and he had gone on to become the most famous and beloved ‘child artist’ during those years and also one of the richest among other junior artists then.

Junior Mehmood celebrated his 62nd birth anniversary during last month (15th November) and though I personally wished him on his birthday on the 14th evening itself I got late in sending this article for the blog due to some hectic work schedule at workplace. (I also apologise to our Editors for the delay on my part in sending this article to them, even though I had sent them a message of sending the article then).

Well, coming back to the today’s song, it is from the 1970 movie ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani’.
Yes, the movie which is mostly famous for its song ‘samaa hai suhaana suhaana, nashe mein jahaan hai’. And very aptly this movie was launched with this song on the blog ( almost ten years back now 🙂 ) in 2009.

I also mentioned in my earlier articles under this series that I am trying to list out the filmography of Junior Mehmood since I found that the filmography mentioned by various sources had some discrepancies in it.

‘Naunihaal-1967’ was his first released movie.

He shot to fame with his performance in ‘Bramhachari-1968’ wherein he also performed on Mehmood’s ‘ham kaale hain to kya hua’ (from ‘Gumnaam-1965’).

Mehmood was his ‘Guru’.

In ‘1971’ he again performed on Mehmood’s famous ‘Mehbooba mehbooba bana leo mijhe dulha’ (from ‘Sadhu Aur Shaitaan-1968’) in the movie ‘Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong’ wherein Mehmood and I.S. Johar were the main leads.
I have mentioned the above in my earlier article in this series here.

We also saw him repeating Mehmood’s ‘Hamjoli-1966’ act in the song ‘birha ki rain sooni sooni sejariya’, which was covered in the previous article in this series.

However, during the preparation of today’s article I came across a link from the movie ‘Baalak-1969’ where Junior Mehmood is performing on Shashi Kapoor’s ‘Affo Khudaa’ from the 1965 movie ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’. I am giving this link for interested readers to watch it here (just watch it and enjoy 🙂 ).

In the song being presented today we can see him doing a ‘Shammi Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Mehmood’ 😊

From 1967 to 1970 he acted in twenty-three movies as mentioned in the table given below.

And from this list we can guess how popular he was in those years.
(The HFGK Vol IV (1961-1970) does not mention the release dates of the movies so it is difficult to arrange the movie according to their date of release unless otherwise I watch each movie and note down its date of release from its certificate.)

Sno Movie Name Year
1 Naunihaal 1967
2 Gunehgaar 1967
3 Parivaar 1967
4 Brahmachari 1968
5 Farishta 1968
6 Sangharsh 1968
7 Suhaag Raat 1968
8 Vaasna 1968
9 Anjaana 1969
10 Baalak 1969
11 Chanda Aur Bijli 1969
12 Do Raaste 1969
13 Nateeja 1969
14 Pyaar Hi Pyaar 1969
15 Raja Saab 1969
16 Simla Road 1969
17 Vishwas 1969
18 Aan Milo Sajna 1970

20 Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani 1970
21 Harishchandra Taramati 1970
22 Kati Patang 1970
23 Yaadgaar 1970

This movie had total five songs written by Rajinder Krishan (2), Hasrat Jaipuri (2) and Qamal Jalalabadi (1).
Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Hemlata, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

(going by the titles of this movie I guess it was passed by the Censor Board on 04.11.1970) …

This movie ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani-1970’ is important from the point of view of Junior Mehmood films because he was nominated for the National Award for the best child actor for this movie. However, it awarded to Rishi Kapoor for the movie ‘Mera Naam Joker-1970’.

I was curious to know how he had felt that time and want to know from Junior Mehmood himself. When asked about it, he was very humble to say that it was a quite happy moment in his life as he was appreciated and he didn’t have any regrets on not winning the award then.

Today’s song is sung by Hemlata and written by Qamar Jalalabadi. Music is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Let us now enjoy the song …

Note *** (there are some parts of the old songs of Hindi movies used in this song of which the lyrics were already available on the blog and I have copied the respective ‘antaras/song’ from the blog and reproduced here, instead of noting down the lyrics again)

Blog Day : 3784 Post No. : 14766

“Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye”(1977) was a movie that must be regharded as a landmark movie of its time. It had a profound impact on movie goers who watched it. I was one of those who were impacted by this movie.

I was one of those who would only watch Amitabh Bachchan angry young man movies those days. And most movie watchers were like that. This movie was clearly a small budget non action movie which did not have Amitabh Bachchan. From the title, I concluded that it was a “sissy” kind of movie not fit to be watched by action movie watchers like yours truly. 🙂

The local daily newspaper that I got those days carried a list of local cinema halls and movies played in them. This movie was released in a new movie hall called “Uphaar”. Most movie halls of Ranchi were located around a single road of Ranchi called “Main Road”. This hall was one of the four that were not located on that road and was in fact situated as the farthest distance. Not that it mattered for movie goers like me. I had watched “Don”(1978) in that hall and I had quite enjoyed that experience. But that was an Amitabh Bachchan action movie, as one can notice. There was no way I was going to this hall to watch “Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye”(1977).

Most movies in Ranchi those days lasted for just three or four weeks if they were popular movies. “Sholay”(1975), the biggest hit of that time had lasted for 14 weeks, which was a big achievement for a place like Ranchi those days.

I noticed that this movie “Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye”(1977) was going on and on and it was showing on signs of being taken off even after the passage of seven or eight weeks. A few weeks later, this movie was taken off “Uphaar”, but released in “Sandhya”, another movie hall not on Main Road, but close enough to my College. Incidentally, I college was located at a place where the main road ended /started and the road going towards Sandhya cinema called Purulia road started/ended. That central location where roads ended/started was called Firayalal Chowk, which was renamed as Albert Ekka Chowk in 1972. Albert Ekka, a native of those places won Paramveer Chakra during 1971 war and so this landmark, one of the most important landmarks in Ranchi was renamed in his honour though the place continued to be known by its earlier name as well.

Coming back to topic, “Sandhya” cinema was close to my college. I decided to watch the movie to see what the fuss was all about. I went to the movie hall, with very low expectations.

For the first few minutes, I thought that I had wasted my time and money. But soon thereafter, I warmed up to the movie and became engrossed in it. By the time the movie ended, I was overwhelmed, as were the others who had come to watch it. I liked the movie so much that I watched it four more times. It was the first time that I went for repeat watch of a movie.

The movie had a simple tale that may have been told quite a few times. Here is the plot of the movie as mentioned in wikipedia:
Seth Harikrishan, the industrialist had as his heir, his only grandson Prem. The grandfather’s only desire was to see the bride of his grandson. When he fell seriously ill, his friend and doctor Farid prevailed upon Prem to bring his girl friend Rita, whom he wanted to marry. But as luck would have it, Rita had gone away to Srinagar to participate in a fashion show and she could not return, as due to snowfall all roads were blocked and air service was suspended. To satisfy his dying grandfather, Prem suggested to his company’s Public Relations Officer Jagdish to hire a model girl who could pose as Rita for some time. Instead, Jagdish brought an illiterate flower seller girl Kammo, with whom Prem and his sweetheart Rita had many altercations. But when Rita came, followed by her scheming mother, Kammo knew that her days were numbered. Yet all efforts of Rita and her mother to win the grandfather’s favours failed. Ultimately, on the birthday of the grandfather, Rita’s mother divulged the truth to doctor Farid. And at the birthday party, it was apparent that Kammo’s true identity was known to everyone. Despite this, the grandfather announced his grandson’s engagement to Kammo, whom he had really liked. His grandson blew into a rage and threatened to leave the house along with Rita and her mother. The grandfather did not stop him. Prem rushed to Rita only to find that without his grandfather’s wealth, his love and sacrifice had no meaning for her. Meanwhile, Kammo, hurt and disillusioned, decided to leave the house for good. Did Prem realise his mistake? Did Kammo forgive him? Did the grandfather welcome him back? See for yourself.

This movie was a Rajshree Productions movie directed by Lekh Tandan. The movie had Rameshwari, Prem Kishan, Shyamlee, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, Shivraj, Sunder, Leela Mishra, Savita Bajaj, Piloo Wadia, Shashikala, Viju Khote, Jagdeep etc in it. Rameshwari, who made her debut with this movie became a overnight sensation. It was she who won over the heart of millions in her role of a simple illiterate flower seller Kammo.

Rameshwari’s debut was like a cricketer scoring a century on test debut. There are many cricketers who have done that but then failed to replicate that in subsequent movies. Sadly the same happened with Rameshwari as well. Her subsequent movies were damp squibs and this debut movie of hers remains the biggest highlight of her acting career.

As far as I am concerned, I remember her for this role. The magic that she cast over her audience in this movie four decade ago is yet to wear off. I realised this fact when I watched the picturisation of this song in the process of covering this song in the blog.

The other big attraction of this movie was its music. In fact, it was the music of this song blaring out on loudspeakers that played an important role in forcing me to go to the movie hall.Ravindra Jain’s music and Hemlata’s voice created magic in this movie and also in subsequent Rajshree Production movies for nearly a decade.

Here is this bhajan for “Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye”(1977). It is sung by Hemlata and chorus. The picturisation shows Kammo singing this bhajan and the rest of the family, including the ailing sethji (Madan Puri) getting attracted towards the puja room and joining her.

One can find such beloved figures of those days as Leela Mishra (playing her usual role) and Ifthikhar (playing not a police officer but a kindly family Doctor). Prem Kishan (son of Premnath) was the errant grandson of sethji and the hero of this movie. The picturisation also reminds us of those days when long distance telephone calls were not as easy (and cheap) as they have become now a days. 🙂

Blog Day : 3709 Post No. : 14636

Today, we are celebrating an eternal birth anniversary – anniversary of the One who is the First Worshipped on all occasions.

There are many tales and variations, that tell of the origins of Lord Ganesh. The telling, as per the Shiv Puraan goes like this. A time was when Lord Shiv went into meditation for a very long period of time. On one occasion, Nandi, the chief of the Ganas of Lord Shiv was not on Mount Kailash. Goddess Parvati started preparing for her bathing rituals. Nandi was not present at the abode, and the Lord Himself was in deep meditation. Wondering and waiting as to who would guard the doorways while she took her bath, Goddess Parvati fashioned a form of a boy child from the turmeric paste that she had applied on to herself. As the form took shape, she then breathed life force into him. A child, as yet un-named, was brought to life. Goddess Parvati instructed him that he is Her son, and that he would obey only her commands. She further instructed him to guard the doorways of the abode, while she was taking her bath. The newborn young child took the instructions to heart and stood vigilant at the doorways.

While Goddess Parvati was still taking her bath, Lord Shiv completed his meditation and arose. He came towards the abode, only to find a fine young child guarding the doorways. Now, the child was not familiar with who this fatherly figure was, as he had not yet been so instructed by Goddess Parvati. In the absence of that knowledge, for him, the prime duty was the last instructions he had received, to guard the doorway and not allow anyone to enter. He pleaded politely with the Lord, to wait. But of course, the Lord was only returning to his own abode an could not understand why he was being prohibited to enter his own abode. The exchange between the Lord and the child took toll of the patience of the Lord, and in a fit of piqued annoyance, threw his trishul (trident) at the child in a manner that the child was beheaded.

He entered his abode. Goddess Parvati had completed her ablutions by then and was ready. When she saw her Lord in the abode, she was happy, and made preparations to offer him something to eat. She served the items in two platters. The Lord asked her, for whom was the second platter. Then Goddess narrated the tale of how she had created a boy child from the turmeric paste from her own body, and left him to guard the doorways while she took bath. And she enquired that the Lord must have met the child as he enter the abode. The Lord now realized what had happened, and then narrated the events as they had transpired outside the doorway.

On hearing the episode of the demise of her just newborn or newly created child, Goddess was overcome with grief. Since she also is the Mother of all creation, her going to this state of grief coupled with fury, of course did not bode well for the creation. All the ferocious manifestations of the Mother Goddess started to appear, threatening destruction of everything. There was an outcry of panic and alarm amongst all living creatures in the universe. The lesser Gods went to Lord Brahma and prayed for his protection.

Lord Brahma came to Mount Kailash and pleaded with the Mother Goddess and Lord Shiv to somehow placate the extreme situation, and avoid the destruction of the universe. Goddess Parvati agreed, on the condition that the child that had been beheaded be brought back to life. In the exchange that occurred between the child and Lord Shiv, the impact of the trishul was such that the head of the child could not be seen anywhere. Lord Shiv then instructed all his adherent disciples to go and search for a head for this child. The instruction was to bring back the head of the first dead entity they encountered, who would be lying prone with its head towards the north. In this search, the first such being encountered was an elephant. And so, its head was brought back to the abode. Lord Shiva placed this head of the elephant on the headless body of the boy child, and breathed life force once again into him. The child was revived and the imminent destruction of the universe was avoided.

The child was named Ganesh, combining two words – gan + eesh. Gan is the word for the closest adherent disciples of Lord Shiv, and eesh is the word that indicates primary or the first lead – meaning the first and the most preferred and honoured amongst all the adherent disciples of the Lord. He is also known by the name Gajaanan – one with the face like an elephant (gaj – elephant; aanan – face). In reality, he is known by numerous names, all depicting certain special characteristics of his persona.

There are other events that followed, by which Ganesh also got the boon and blessing that he would be the first one to be worshipped in any auspicious activity of the humans and of the demigods.

For today’s celebration, we present her a song from the 1979 film ‘Marte Dam Tak’. The song is created by Ravindra Jain who is both the writer and the composer for this song. The singing voices are those of Shabbir Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Hemlata and Mahendra Kapoor. On screen, the song is performed by Govinda, Shakti Kapoor, Farah Naaz and Rajkumar, while we also see Om Puri in the picturization. The lyrics of this song have been sent in by our dear Prakashchandra ji.

Once again, with plentiful greetings to all friends and readers on this occasion – may all the happinesses come your way, and all the obstacles in your paths be removed by the blessings of Lord Ganesh – the first amongst all the followers of Lord Shiv.

Ganpati Baapa Moryaa. . .

Blog Day : 3691 Post No. : 14602

Today is the 10th occasion that we are celebrating the festival of Rakshabandhan on our blog. It is customary that on this day, we post a few songs from Hindi films celebrating this wonderful festival of the pious relation of brother and sister in our tradition.

This song is from an unfamiliar film from 1987. The film title is ‘Parakh’. The film is produced by DS Obhan for Nath Pictures, Bombay, and is directed by Vijay Kapoor. Lyrics (Provided by Prakash Chandra)

saat samandar paar ho chaahe
behnaa se bhai
kitni hi door
chaahe baras bhar
bhoola rahe par
aaj ke din kare
yaad zaroor

kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage
le ke chumban teri kalaayee ka
le ke chumban teri kalaayee ka
yug yug se hai
rahegaa yugon tak
pyaar behan aur bhai ka
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage

aaj ke din to bhaiyya ki
behna aarti utaare
mangal deep ki jyoti mein
chanda sa mukhda nihaare
le ke balaayein
de ke duaayein
karti hai shagun mitthai ka
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage

ik vat vriksh ki chhaaya mein
hum donon ka jeevan pala hai
kitni ghani us ki chhaaya hai
wo babul kitna bhala hai
mere bhaiyya
pragati mein teri
nit judey ank dahaai ka
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage

aaj main jo kuchh maangoon gi
bhaiyya tujhe dena padega
haath kisi albeli ka
ab haath mein lena padega
aayegi bhabhi
ghar mein bajega
baaja madhur badhaayee ka
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage
le ke chumban teri kalaayee ka
le ke chumban teri kalaayee ka
yug yug se hai
rahega yugon tak
pyaar behan aur bhai ka
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage
kehte hain raakhi ke ye dhaage

“Tapasya”(1975) was directed by Anil Ganguly for Rajshree Productions, Bombay. The movie was based on a Novel by Ashapoorna Devi. The movie is about sacrificing one’s own life for the sake of bringing up one’s younger siblings and thinking of one’s own personal life only after one’s younger siblings have been settled in their lives.

The movie had Raakhi in the central role. Others in the movie were Parikshat Sahni, Asrani, Manju Bansal Asrani, A K Hangal, Nasir Hussain, Adil, Manju Bhatia, Urmila Bhatt, Birbal, Abha Dhulia, C S Dubey, Raja Duggal, Master Eknath, Gayatri etc in it.

The movie had four songs in it. Two of these songs, arguably the most popular songs of the movie have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from “Tapasya”(1975) to appear in the blog. This song was also quite popular during its time. The song is sung by Chandrani Mukherji, Hemlata and chorus. M G Hashmat is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravindra Jain.

The picturisation shows Raakhi’s younger brother (played by Asrani) and his newly wedded wife (played by Manju Bansal Asrani- who was recently married to Asrani in real life as well) being teased by his younger siblings and neighbours which is the usual reception (a sort of ragging)that a newly married couple are subjected to from relatives friends and neighbours in India. The teasing is more addressed to the wife rather than the husband and the song ends with the lady getting irritated by this teasing.

The lady getting disturbed at the end disturbed me as well and so I could not gather the courage to watch the song more than a few times. So I have not provided colour coding by the two main singers in the song. 🙂

“Naiyya”(1979) was directed by Prashant Nanda for Chanda Pictures, Bombay. I became aware of this fact when I discussed the earlier songs from this movie. Initially I was under the impression that this movie was a Rajshree Productions movie and once again I reverted back to the same impression with passage of time 🙂

The movie had Zarina Wahab, Prashant Nanda (new discovery for Hindi movies), Baldev Khosa, Dinesh Thakur, Leela Mishra, Mohammad Mohsin (another new discovery), Jageerdaar, Dinesh Hingoo, Nandlal Sharma, c S Dubey, Shail Chaturvedi, Shivraj, Amrish Puri, Pardesi, Om Tripathi, Shankar Bhake, Manmauji, Rooplekha etc, along with guest appearances by Sulochana, Shubha Khote and Jayshree T.

The movie had five songs in it. Four of them have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth and final song from “Naiyya”(1979) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Hemlata. Ravindra Jain is the lyricist as well as the music director.

The song is picturised as a village nautanki song on Jayshree T and her performance is being watched by many people including a very young and lecherous looking Amrish Puri. The picturisation also shows Zarina Wahab and Leela Mishhra passing through and giving looks of disapproval to the proceedings in general and Amrish Puri in particular.

It is a rare occasion for Hemlata to sing a song like this which was the forte of Asha Bhonsle and she has done a commendable job.

With this “phadakta hua” song, all the songs of “Naiyya”(1979) have been covered and the movie joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.
